Description/Taste
Winter Wonderland Mix™ is comprised of flowers that vary in size, shape, texture, and flavor. The blooms range from 1 to 7 centimeters in diameter and bear clustered petals in broad, flat, pointed, ruffled, or tubular shapes. Each petal showcases smooth, curled, or serrated edges and is attached by short green sepals at the base of the flower. The petals also possess a delicate yet sturdy nature, with a velvety, supple, pliable, and soft feel. Winter Wonderland Mix™ is known for its refined color palette, capturing the colors of winter with hues of lilac, blue, cream, white, and alabaster. The petals and flower heads are edible, bearing a crisp and succulent consistency, and contribute subtly tart, mild, green, and floral flavors.
Seasons/Availability
Winter Wonderland Mix™ is available in December through February.
Current Facts
Winter Wonderland Mix™ is a curated seasonal blend of edible flowers created by Fresh Origins® in San Diego, California. The hand-selected mix is only offered for a limited time each year and is crafted as an inspired blend to celebrate the winter season. Winter Wonderland Mix™ features soft and bold blooms, providing chefs and mixologists with a wide selection to accentuate culinary dishes and beverages for elevated presentations. The flowers offer enhanced textures, colors, and flavors and are a rotating mix of seasonal blooms, including carnations, borage, snapdragons, and dianthus. Winter Wonderland Mix™ can be used to garnish savory and sweet dishes, or floated and added to cocktails as a conversation starter. Chefs and mixologists use floral additions as a tool to enhance the perceived value of their creations, making them a thoughtful addition that aids in strategic plating to create memorable experiences.
Nutritional Value
Winter Wonderland Mix™ has not been studied for its nutritional properties, as each flower variety will vary in its nutritional content and is used as a garnish, not as a source of vitamins and minerals. Edible flowers, in general, have been used in culinary dishes throughout history. Some blooms contain fiber to aid in digestion and vitamins A, B, C, E, and K, which help maintain healthy organs, support faster wound healing, strengthen the immune system, and protect cells against free radical damage. Edible flowers also provide minerals in small amounts, including calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, potassium, and zinc. These minerals help the body develop bones and teeth, produce proteins for oxygen transport through the bloodstream, balance fluid levels, and control daily nerve functions.
Applications
Winter Wonderland Mix™ is an innovative combination of flowers used as a finishing element on culinary dishes and drinks. The flowers should be added during plating and just before serving, and can be used on both raw and cooked dishes. Winter Wonderland Mix™ has the versatility to be divided and only select flowers used, or chefs can combine several blooms to enhance the visual appeal. The flowers are used whole, sometimes with their green sepals removed, or the petals can be delicately separated and sprinkled over dishes. Try adding Winter Wonderland Mix™ to green salads, fruit salads, or cheese boards. The blooms are also scattered over ice cream, added to dips, spreads, and butter, or displayed on toast and crostini. In sweet dishes, like cakes, cookies, and pastries, the flowers add color and texture. The blooms can also be sugared as a sweet topping. In savory preparations, Winter Wonderland Mix™ is incorporated as a finishing element over fish, pasta, and omelets. Beyond culinary dishes, smaller blooms are frozen into ice cubes, and blooms of all sizes are placed on the rim as an attractive drink garnish. These garnishes are used for cocktails, mocktails, lemonades, sparkling beverages, and punches. Winter Wonderland Mix™ pairs well with both sweet and savory flavors, as each flower contributes a distinct taste and texture. The blooms should be stored in their original clamshell in the refrigerator, where they will remain fresh for approximately 7 to 14 days. It is recommended to immediately use them for the freshest appearance.
Ethnic/Cultural Info
Winter Wonderland Mix™ is a modern interpretation of flowers as a classic garnish for beverages, such as cocktails. The history of the cocktail garnish is muddled as various flavorings, spices, herbs, and blooms have been added to drinks since ancient times. The most well-known reference to a cocktail garnish was featured in “The Bartender’s Guide,” written by famed mixologist Jerry Thomas in 1862. Thomas was nicknamed “The Professor” and was a well-known bartender in New York City credited with creating innovative cocktails and making drinks with theatrical elements. In the book, garnishes such as citrus twists, berries, and cucumbers are highlighted, marking one of the first written records of items being used as decorative elements.
