Description/Taste
Gelado™ avocados vary in size and shape depending on growing conditions and have a pyriform to oval appearance with a curved, uniform nature. The variety bears a characteristic stem slightly off to one side of the fruit, and the skin is semi-thick, with a textured, bumpy, faintly glossy, leathery feel. The skin remains dark green, even when ripe, and becomes wrinkled, with some dark spots as it matures. Gelado™ avocados can be easily sliced and peeled, revealing yellow-green flesh with a thin, darker-green ring beneath the skin. Ripe flesh is dense, fibreless, smooth, velvety, and creamy, with known for its high fat content. The flesh also encases a large, round, brown seed tightly embedded in the center of the fruit. Gelado™ avocados have a rich, subtly earthy, and nutty flavor.
Seasons/Availability
Gelado™ avocados are available for a limited time in the summer.
Current Facts
Gelado™ avocados, botanically classified as Persea americana, are a specialty variety belonging to the Lauraceae family. The cultivar was created and is exclusively grown by Apricot Lane Farms in Southern California and is sold as a seasonal summer delicacy. The farm named the variety Gelado™ for its rich, creamy, and decadent flavor and is produced in limited quantities each year. Gelado™ avocados are sought by chefs and home cooks for their smooth, spreadable flesh, flavor, and versatility, which enable them to be incorporated into a wide array of fresh and cooked culinary preparations.
Nutritional Value
Gelado™ avocados have not been studied for their nutritional properties. Avocados, in general, are a source of fiber to regulate digestion and contain vitamins B, C, E, and K, which contribute to energy production, strengthen the immune system, protect cells against free radical damage, and promote faster wound healing. Avocados also provide minerals in varying amounts, including potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, and copper. These minerals help the body balance fluid levels, produce the protein hemoglobin for oxygen transport in the bloodstream, build red blood cells, regulate nerve function, and support bone and tooth development. Beyond consumption, the flesh is used as a natural beauty aid, mashed and applied topically to hydrate and nourish the skin through the fruit’s vitamin C and E content.
Applications
Gelado™ avocados have a rich flavor suited for fresh and cooked preparations. The variety is primarily consumed out of hand to savor its smooth, buttery texture, and is often sliced as an accompaniment to salads, tacos, breakfast dishes, grain bowls, and seafood recipes. These slices are sprinkled with lemon juice or salt for added flavor, or served plain, depending on preference. Gelado™ avocados can be used in any preparation that calls for avocados and are commonly sliced and layered onto sandwiches, mashed for toast, or incorporated into fresh spring rolls. The farm promotes the variety for its spreadable nature. Gelado™ avocados are also mashed into creamy dips, sliced and stirred into soups and curries, or eaten by the spoonful as a snack with select toppings. Gelado™ avocados pair well with spices such as paprika, cumin, cayenne, and turmeric; meats such as beef, poultry, turkey, and pork; and herbs such as parsley, cilantro, dill, and oregano. Whole, unopened Gelado™ avocados should be ripened at room temperature. Once mature, the avocados can be kept in the fridge for a few days, but it is best to consume them immediately for the optimal quality and flavor. Opened avocados should be covered in lemon juice and tightly wrapped to prevent the flesh from discoloring. These covered pieces should be stored in the refrigerator and consumed within a day or two.
Ethnic/Cultural Info
Gelado™ avocados are a certified biodynamic and organic variety known for their rich flavor, developed through Apricot Lane Farms’ regenerative farming methods. The farm is a thriving, self-sustaining ecosystem focused on maintaining soil health and is home to 15 varieties of avocados that mature at different times throughout the year, enabling almost year-round production. Gelado™ avocados are a summer favorite and are a seasonally anticipated variety. Apricot Lane Farms also grows other cultivars, including Gem, Reed, Gwen, Sir Prize, Puebla, and Fuerte. The avocados are handpicked, sorted, and packed on the farm, then sold to consumers during peak season for the best flavor.
Geography/History
Gelado™ avocados were discovered in the groves of Apricot Lane Farms, a 234-acre farm in Moorpark, California, in Ventura County. The farm was founded in 2011 and grows more than 200 varieties of fruits and vegetables, including several types of avocados. The history of the variety has not been revealed, other than that it is a child or descendant of the Nabal avocado, a variety native to Guatemala. Nabal avocados were introduced to global markets as a new cultivar in the early 20th century and are prized for their flavor and productivity. Today, Gelado™ avocados are grown only by Apricot Lane Farms and are sold seasonally through their farmstand, select farmers’ markets, and a few Southern California-based retailers and distributors.
