Frequently asked questions

[edit]

How do I write an interesting hook?

Successful hooks tend to have several traits. Most importantly, they share a surprising or intriguing fact. They give readers enough context to understand the hook, but leave enough out to make them want to learn more. They are written for a general audience who has no prior knowledge of or interest in the topic area. Lastly, they are concise, and do not attempt to cover multiple facts or present information about the subject beyond what's needed to understand the hook.

When will my nomination be reviewed?

This page is often backlogged. As long as your submission is still on the page, it will stay there until an editor reviews it. Since editors are encouraged to review the oldest submissions first, it may take several weeks until your submission is reviewed. In the meantime, please consider reviewing another submission (not your own) to help reduce the backlog (see instructions below). Because of WP:DYKTIMEOUT, a nomination should be reviewed within two months since the reviewer/promoter may agree to reject and close an unpromoted hook after that time has passed.

Where is my hook?

If you can't find the nomination you submitted to this nominations page, it may have been approved and is on the approved nominations page waiting to be promoted. It could also have been added to one of the prep areas, promoted from prep to a queue, or is on the main page.

If the nominated hook is in none of those places, then the nomination has probably been rejected. Such a rejection usually only occurs if it was at least a couple of weeks old and had unresolved issues for which any discussion had gone stale. If you think your nomination was unfairly rejected, you can query this on the DYK discussion page or with the closer, but as a general rule such nominations will only be restored in exceptional circumstances. If your nomination was promoted, but it hasn't reached the main page after two weeks, you can also query this on the DYK discussion page.

Instructions for reviewers

[edit]

Any editor who was not involved in writing/expanding or nominating an article may review it by checking to see that the article meets all the DYK criteria (long enough, new enough, no serious editorial or content issues) and the hook is cited. Editors may also alter the suggested hook to improve it, suggest new hooks, or even lend a hand and make edits to the article to which the hook applies so that the hook is supported and accurate. For more information on the DYK rules and review processes, see the DYK guidelines and the reviewer instructions.

To post a comment or review on a DYK nomination, follow the steps outlined below:

  • Look through this page, Template talk:Did you know, to find a nomination you would like to comment on.
  • Click the "Review or comment" link at the top of the nomination. You will be taken to the nomination subpage.
  • The top of the page includes a list of the DYK criteria. Check the article to ensure it meets all the relevant criteria.
  • To indicate the result of the review (i.e., whether the nomination passes, fails, or needs some minor changes), leave a signed comment on the page. Please begin with one of the 5 review symbols that appear at the top of the edit screen, and then indicate all aspects of the article that you have reviewed; your comment should look something like the following:

Article length and age are fine, no copyvio or plagiarism concerns, reliable sources are used. But the hook needs to be shortened.

If you are the first person to comment on the nomination, there will be a line :* <!-- REPLACE THIS LINE TO WRITE FIRST COMMENT, KEEPING  :* --> showing you where you should put the comment.
  • Save the page.
  • After the nomination is approved, a bot will automatically list the nomination page on Template talk:Did you know/Approved.

If there is any problem or concern about a nomination, please consider notifying the nominator by placing {{subst:DYKproblem|Article|header=yes|sig=yes}} on the nominator's talk page.

How to remove a rejected nomination

[edit]
  • Open the DYK nomination subpage of the nomination you would like to remove.
  • In the window where the DYK nomination subpage is open, replace the line {{DYKsubpage with {{subst:DYKsubpage, and replace |passed= with |passed=no. Then save the page. This has the effect of wrapping up the discussion on the DYK nomination subpage in a blue archive box and stating that the nomination was unsuccessful, as well as adding the nomination to a category for archival purposes.
  • Alternatively, you can use PSHAW, which automates the process.

How to remove a hook from the prep areas or queue

[edit]
  • Edit the prep area or queue where the hook is and remove the hook and the credits associated with it.
  • Go to the hook's nomination subpage (there should have been a link to it in the credits section).
    • View the edit history for that page
    • Go back to the last version before the edit where the hook was promoted, and revert to that version to make the nomination active again.
    • Add a new icon on the nomination subpage to cancel the previous tick and leave a comment after it explaining that the hook was removed from the prep area or queue, and why, so that later reviewers are aware of this issue.
  • Add a transclusion of the template back to this page so that reviewers can see it. It goes under the date that it was first created/expanded/listed as a GA. You may need to add back the day header for that date if it had been removed from this page.
  • If you removed the hook from a queue, it is best to either replace it with another hook from one of the prep areas, or to leave a message at WT:DYK asking someone else to do so.

How to move a nomination subpage to a new name

[edit]
  • Don't; it should not ever be necessary, and will break some links which will later need to be repaired. Even if you change the title of the article, you don't need to move the nomination page.

Thank you for the feedback — you're right that the original hook leaned too heavily on domain-specific terms ("shock-on-soliton," "Mach stem") that don't mean much without background in the field. I've rewritten it in plainer language:
... that a ridge-like wave called a soliton can, if only slightly curved, develop a sharp change — a kink — running along its front, similar to the pattern where ocean waves meet at an angle near a shoreline?
Hopefully this version is clearer. Happy to adjust further if any part still isn't landing. Soliton 1983 (talk) 11:38, 7 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Soliton 1983, I've restored the previous hook so we don't lose the history, and also struck it; your revised hook (now labeled ALT1) is, regrettably, at 204 characters, above the 200 character absolute maximum; even more important, it lacks the required bold link to the article being nominated. In my ignorance, I've proposed an ALT2 that restores the article name and shortens the example, but at 197 characters it's really pushing the limits and may not be an adequate example or sufficiently interesting. Can you shorten things further in a new ALT hook? Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 18:06, 14 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Fram: and @Pbritti: where are we on this one? Have the issues been solved? It would be helpful to a reviewer going in knowing whether or not the sourcing issues were resolved to everyone's satisfaction. @4meter4: I would be willing to review this nom again but would like to see Kevmin advise me regarding which hooks they want reviewed (or if they would like new hooks added to the nom). Best, ~ Pbritti (talk) 20:22, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure if procedurally we must have a new reviewer, or not. All I know is it is hard to do a new review in this context without having some sort of reported assessment as to whether the reasons for the initial pull to ERRORS was solved. In looking at the article talk page, Pbritti seems satisfied, but Fram never chimed in. We really need to hear from the editor whose objections led to the pulling of the article in the first place.4meter4 (talk) 20:32, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
No idea why anyone would want to give them the reward of a DYK after it was so hard to get them to check or correct anything, but it's not my playground, if you think this should get rereviewed and put on the mainspace for some reason, I won't stop you. Fram (talk) 08:17, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

I was going to promote this hook, but I had some concerns with it. The "is bringing a Te Ao Māori approach", from my perspective, reads as vague and undefined, as the article doesn't really define what a Te Ao Māori approach means and it is not intuitive to the average reader. Also, this phrase and the phrase used in the source reads as promotional to me: since "bringing a perspective" is inherently vague, it seems like the source is stating this to promote that they hired someone of this identity rather than explain what would change because of this identity. Perhaps an alternative below (and yes, it is a first hook, but I think it is more interesting and easy to verify):

    @Victuallers, Coldcoldwind, and OpalYosutebito:Thoughts? Z1720 (talk) 01:16, 11 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

      • ALT1 sounds a lot better. - OpalYosutebito 『talk』 『articles I want to eat』 03:36, 11 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
        • It doesn't in my opinion sound better, it is certainly much less interesting - another anglophone country?. I wouldn't have proposed such an uninteresting hook. I think that it means "within the bounds of Māori spiritual and cultural tradition and viewing the world from that standpoint" (as wiki says) and if you think "spiritual and cultural tradition" is vague and promotional - then I agree but that's the nature of spiritual and cultural traditions! It works with the picture as everyone is going to understand that she is the first woman with Maori traditions, but without it, it's a very bland hook apart from her name. Te Paea Paringatai deserves better. I've had a go, I'll leave it to you guys. Am I right that the librarians sound more adventurous than us? Victuallers (talk) 07:23, 11 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
    • @Victuallers: "Am I right that the librarians sound more adventurous than us?" That is not what my concern was. The phrase "a Te Ao Māori approach" is vague and undefined, both in the article and in the source where it came from. If there is more information about what this phrase means in this context, a more interesting and specific hook can be crafted (and perhaps the article expanded with more prose). For example, if she is going to implement a Te Ao Māori structure within some aspect of the federation, refocus an aspect of the federation (and if so, how?) or was chosen because she wants to implement a specific program within the organisation. Z1720 (talk) 12:28, 11 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
It was a rhetoric question, Z1720. Thank you for repeating your point, did you read my reply? It's my understanding the librarians voted for her with that approach. They seemed to be able to cope with her description of a Te Ao Māori approach, they may have read the wiki definition or they are feeling adventurous. I doubt anyone demanded the detail you ask about, if you can find it then please add it. It's not a "good article" so yes it can be expanded - but that isn't a DYK requirement. Having an interesting and truthful hook is. There may have been less interesting hooks than the one you suggested but obviously I can't remember one. Is coming from NZ "intuitive"? maybe, but it's not interesting or relevant. I'll leave it to you guys. Victuallers (talk) 13:07, 11 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
    • I'm also concerned that "bringing Te Ao Māori approach" sounds like press release-esque phrasing rather than conveying a definitive fact about her. Also, the infobox says she has 3 children - this should be referenced in the body, or the infobox needs a citation. Zzz plant (talk) 14:57, 13 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
    • I've removed the children fact - its not important. I really don't understand your objection. The idea that a published fact may be "press release-esque phrasing" is beyond me. It seems to require a level of insight that I don't think we have. (If that was a requirement then we could write-off the majority of recent political announcements). If we end up with a hook that says recent librarian appointment comes from New Zealand then we are scraping the barrel. Look at her picture? Does she look like someone proud to be Maori? Was the tattoo, a press release? I suggest we find another reviewer as I'd prefer to withdraw the nomination than to proceed with alt1. Victuallers (talk) 09:58, 9 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems

    Hook eligibility:

    • Cited: No - Sources differ between what is stated in this nom and what is used in the article prose. See below.
    • Interesting: Yes
    QPQ: Done.

Overall: @AdobongPogi: The article was listed as GA within the DYK nom cutoff and is long enough. The article is adequately sourced, neutral, and Earwig returns 24.2%, mostly due to short quotes.

However, while the ALT0 hook itself is found in the article prose, the source used to support that hook in this nom and in the article itself is different. You cited a Philippine Star above, when you used an Inquirer (Ref 26) in the prose. For formality, please cite the source you used at this nom in the article itself, or update this nom to reflect the source supporting the hook in the article. ALT1's source you used above is also not cited in the article itself; its prose equivalent is supported by another Inquirer report (Ref 7). I hope that makes sense.

I find both ALT0 and ALT1 interesting, but I prefer ALT0 as it might resonate more with an international audience than ALT1; I'll approve both regardless once the only issue I have is resolved. Regards, Relayed (talk • contribs) 09:37, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

    • New enough, long enough. No QPQ required. NPOV, appropriately sourced, although I am troubled by the first incarnation of this article in a sandbox, which does (as Launchballer notes) have WP:AISIGNS present, and is a fully formed article with no citations, a sign that sources may have been found to fit claims rather than allowing the claims to follow from the sources. I note that Y.paulsen has not edited for some weeks and may not check back in here, but we need to hear about how this article was developed. As for the hook, it's not intriguing and appears to require specialist knowledge to be interesting. Furthermore, it's not supported by the source (please add links to the article, Y.paulsen), which itself is the study that the hook claims resulted in an overhaul of the dating system. But the study that triggers the overhaul cannot be cited as evidence that an overhaul happened. (Moreover, this hook is not in the article.) All told, some questions need to be answered and a new hook is needed. Dclemens1971 (talk) 21:39, 9 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Sure. "Rapper-singer Honey Singh recently opened up about his past chart-topping songs, expressing criticism of his own work. In an interview with The Lallantop, a sister channel of India Today, he referred to 'Sunny Sunny' from the film 'Yaariyan' as 'the most stupid song' he had ever written." Babin Mew, Thanks for removing the Times of India sources. Which part of the sources say that it is "one of his most famous" songs? I see mentions of "chart-topping", but not that it was one of his most famous songs. A song could top the charts without it being one of the singer's most famous songs, or am I wrong? If this is too much of an issue I'm happy to approve an alternative hook that doesn't mention the popularity, but that would be less interesting of course. ―Panamitsu (talk) 07:01, 7 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
If separate citations are allowed for the purpose of stating that this song is one of his most popular, then here are probably some: "Yo Yo Honey Singh, popular for numbers like Blue Eyes and Sunny Sunny, will set out on an eight-city tour in the country, as a part of LIVE Viacom18's new annual property MTV Super Stage." () "With songs like 'Lungi Dance' (Chennai Express), 'Sunny Sunny' (Yaariyan) 'Party All Night' (Boss) and 'Baby Ko Bass Pasand Hai' (Sultan), Singh was not only creating chart-toppers with immense recall value, he was also shaking a leg with the biggest stars of the Bollywood filmdom." () "From Sunny Sunny to Desi Kalakar, Singh has given several hits over the years and has been making waves with his concerts." () If separate citations are not allowed, then I guess it is a bit of a problem and has to be removed. Babin Mew (talk) 06:40, 8 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Nice to meet you, ایران 1405. The article is long enough, nominated in time, on fine sources, without obvious copyvio, - thank you! I am not yet happy with the hook. "Playa" meant for me - so far - just beach, and it doesn't help to say it twice. Could we say "dry salt lake" instead of the second "playa". Or what else? Could we use an image, perhaps? Next: "Qajar-era" tells me nothing, sorry. Could we have a link, perhaps? Or drop it? You can create alternate hooks below, numbering: ALT0a, ALT0b ... ALT1 in case you want a different fact. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:08, 27 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Gerda Arendt: Hello and thank you for your thoughtful review of the article.
I appreciate your comments about the hook. I agree that "playa" might be confusing for some readers, and "Qajar-era" could use more context. I've also added a new panoramic image of Bajestan Playa after rainfall to the article, which I hope gives a better visual impression of the landscape.
Based on your feedback, here are some revised hook options:
ALT0a: ... that Bajestan Playa in northeastern Iran, the second-largest salt flat in the Middle East, was mentioned in a 19th-century Qajar-era travelogue? (with the new image)
ALT0b: ... that Bajestan Playa, a dry salt lake in northeastern Iran, is the second largest of its kind in the Middle East and was recorded in a 19th-century Persian travelogue?
ALT0c: ... that the second-largest salt flat in the Middle East, Bajestan Playa in Iran, was described in a 19th-century travelogue from the Qajar period?
Please let me know which hook you prefer, and whether you think the new image works well for the DYK section.

One more piece of advice if I may: please write edit summaries, for every edit, even when it takes time. I wasted to find the edit that changed the image, and had no help in the history.
That image is eye-catching and pretty, but looks a bit like a sunset on a lake. The one we had before showed more salt ;) I would not recommend to use it for the DYK.
I formatted the hooks to include the links. Each ALT has to be ready by be used on the main page, - we can't expect a promoter to add the bold link from the original to the ALT, for example. Next time you do it, please.

    • New, long enough, nicely written, AGF-ing on sourcing and paraphrasing, QPQ done. The hook doesn't work: it has a subjective absolute (I tend to be lienient with those, but this is a bit too assertive: "did you know that he was the greatest sultan? well did you?!"; it is also arguably not verified, as the quote in O'Fahey is much softer). I have to say I am also struggling to understand why you would struggle to find a hookier hook in an article that contains the following line: "As a trophy, he cut off the chief's beard and displayed it in his house." Another thing (not disqualifying per se, but needs a fix): a large portion, one mentioning that territorial acquisitions made Darfur larger than Nigeria, is only cited at the end, with two sources. But the facts in the paragraph are so diverse that it is quite unlikely that both sources verify the entirety of the claims (including that they both thought of the Nigeria comparison -- did they?). Please fix this by attributing more clearly. Dahn (talk) 19:44, 24 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Dahn, agreed on the hook (I usually struggle w hooks tbh lol). The bit about Nigeria is on pgs 55-6 of O'Fahey 2008 (Darfur plus Kordofan, an area larger than modern Nigeria, thus became the largest pre-modern state created within what is now Sudan.), tbh I think moving it to be directly inline would make things too cluttered as I'd have to repeat the refs for the previous sentence as well (more problematic because of {{rp}}, subreferencing can't come soon enough!). How's the following:
ALT1: ... that Darfurian sultan Muhammad Tayrab cut off the beard of a rebellious chief he had defeated, and displayed it as a trophy in his house?
    Thanks again, Kowal2701 (talk, contribs) 21:41, 4 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, Kowal2701. I think you used the most awkward referencing system of those we can use ("sfn" is much simpler, and I personally use an even more free-form one in articles I write), and therefore I see your predicament; while it would be ideal for the citations to be redistributed somehow, it is by no means a disqualifying concern. I have however both suggested the new hook and made significant edits to the article, so I think another reviewer is needed to wrap this up. From my view, it all checks out. @splains @Jon698 @LunaEclipse First hook is certainly nice, yes. However, it just became the "most profitable film in history" comparing budget to gross We could run a hook about that. NewAccount7295 (talk) 23:50, 21 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

    - hi @Jon698, Generalissima, and Crisco 1492:, I'm reopening this as I think the "most profitable" is misleading. Profitability would ordinarily refer to profit (revenue minus costs), whereas the source is actually comparing box-office gross to production budget. Indeed, the source itself acknowledges this unusual definition, saying that it defines "profitability at the box office" as how many times a film's budget it makes in ticket sales. The IMDB "most profitable" list doesn't list Niu Lai at all for example -. I think the claim in the article should be modified to perhaps say something like it has an exceptionally high gross-to-budget ratio, and the hook modified accordingly. Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 12:59, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Jon698: thanks for the quick response. Just curious why the article and the source seem to say it's the highest ever, while the hook is qualified as "one of the highest"... is that justified? They should probably match each other, whichever way around we go.
I've just noticed a discrepancy in the reported budget which may be relevant to the record claim: the /Film source gives it as under US$200, whereas the HK01 source says several thousand to tens of thousands of yuan, which I think would imply at least $450 and maybe into the thousands of dollars. Since the claimed gross-to-budget record depends on the budget figure, I think we probably need to resolve that too. Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 14:18, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

If it were to be shown to be reliable, we would still require page-by-page citations to the facts, including first and foremost the hook -- not a citation to the whole doc. Please fix this before the article can be even considered. Dahn (talk) 16:42, 25 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
    • For a bit of background, Geisler and Reitz are historians who were contracted by Luxembourgish authorities to produce a report on the activities of SREL 1960-2001. The study followed an affair from 2013, which prompted political moves for transparency on the history of the institution. The Geisler-Reitz commission was established by act of parliament (Law of July 23, 2016), study was conducted 2017-2019, and the report was presented in the parliament upon completion. See outline of how the study was initiated after the passing of the Law of July 23, 2016 at "An international competition was launched in September 2016. A commission, called the "evaluation committee," composed of two representatives from the CCP SREL, two members of the University of Luxembourg (de facto C2DH), and the Director of the National Archives, chaired by First Government Advisor Jeff Fettes, heard two teams: a Franco-Belgian team composed of two PhDs in Contemporary History, including the author, and a team of two residents of Dudelange, a PhD and a Master's degree in History. The foreign teams were eliminated in favor of the Luxembourgish teams. Thus, Nadine Geisler and Jean Reitz were entrusted with the task of scientifically analyzing specific historical archives. They submitted their report on February 5, 2020, contractually completing work begun on June 1, 2017." Plenty of other media coverage on the research project and the report - , , , , , etc.. So, whilst the report is not a book or magazine article in the usual sense, it suffices as WP:RS in being a formal scientific work, not self-published. I'll revise the page numbers for the cites to the article. --Soman (talk) 00:40, 26 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
    • @Soman: I think you can add forum.lu as the publisher of that version of the report, as currently it appears as if it is self-published -- and all the above detail doesn't really address that. I also think you know better than to add the page numbers to one citation. You should make separate citations for each of the pages/page ranges you cite. Also: is is too much to ask that you properly format the title INSTEAD OF HAVING IT IN ALL CAPS and that you put make the link lead to archived version, so that it doesn't rot and become unusable in two years or so? • Article is new enough, long enough, and has no copyright violation. However, @Thriley: I am surprised at the poor nomination from an experienced DYK editor. There are basic and significant issues in this nomination that shouldn't have been made by a DYK veteran. First, three of the four sources are published by the subject's employer, Duke University, and lack sufficient independence. We need a minimum of three independent sources to pass WP:GNG. Only the NYT obit is usable toward evidence of notability. Two more independent sources will need to be added to the article in order to pass WP:DYKCITE, and the article needs to reduce where possible citations to non-independent materials. Its fine to use them, but only in a limited way. They shouldn't make up the bulk of the citations, and at present over half of the article is built from these non-independent sources.
Additionally, the facts in the hooks are not present in the article. There is no mention of being a self taught microsurgeon in the article. While the nominator has provided quotes, the nominator did not state what sources the quotes came from. There is also no comparative claim saying he was a better surgeon than football player in the article, and no source for that fact. In short, these hooks are not verifiable. We need text in the article saying the hook fact followed immediately with an inline citation to a source that verifies the content. The current proposed hooks may work if editing is done to the article which adds text either identical to the hook or very close to the hook language with an inline citation. Otherwise, we will need new hook proposals.

My apologies. I noticed the article was expanded and did not consider the problems of relying so heavily on connected sources- It was a last minute nomination. I see there is plenty of coverage of Urbaniak going back decades: There is little question that he meets notability guidelines. I'll add sources and expand the article as well. Thriley (talk) 23:29, 18 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Thriley: Are you still wanting to work on this, or do you want to withdraw? It looks like ScottyNolan has gotten into some trouble over AI use with the AI noticeboard which has now gutted the article below the 1500 character count. It was going to need work anyway. Let me know what you want to do. Best.4meter4 (talk) 23:32, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Given that the AI noticeboard refactored the article to below the required length, and there has been no movement on addressing the sourcing concerns I am rejecting this nomination. It can always be worked on and brought to GA status and then renominated.4meter4 (talk) 23:53, 9 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

The source for the hook technically states he hit a buck, but I doubt they are referring to the sheep or the goat. My only real issue is that I think the hook needs more context about who Simmons was or about how the drive to the airport related to his career (this drive was part of his career move to Canada). However, there are several red errors in the references that need to be addressed before the article passes. In addition, I am unsure how the current hook is interesting. Emergency responders often have a response time in minutes when reacting to a call. The article is fresh and sufficiently long. QPQ is done. Sources are cited. • While writing out the hook, I listed the ships in that order, but found including (pictured) halfway through the hook was visually disruptive and detracted from the point if Takou is listed afterwards. I like your idea, but the uniqueness of Takou's name is somewhat lost if the reader did not know that three other ships and the class shared a name. GGOTCC 00:43, 8 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
How are you parsing "the only ship in the Taku-class destroyers not to be named 'Taku'", if it's not "all the other ships in the Taku class were named 'Taku'" ? DS (talk) 18:21, 8 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Because that claim works for many classes and is not interesting. If this was a class of two destroyers, Takou would be the only member of the class not named Taku. That would be like having a hook stating, "Did you know that USS Mount Whitney is the only Blue Ridge-class command ship not named Blue Ridge" because Blue Ridge is the only other member of the class. Here, every Taku qualifies for DYK and listing them all five illustrates the point better. Besides, the point of DYK is to showcase new content. All five qualify and make an interesting hook together. GGOTCC 18:49, 8 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

If it's a choice between using the image or having 'Takou' at the end of a string of 'Taku's instead of in the middle, I say dump the image. "Taku, Taku, Taku, Takou" is funnier than "Taku, Taku, Takou, Taku". DS (talk) 03:11, 14 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

We would loose the additional pun in the image name (Taku is a place and the namesake), but I see your point. How does ALT1 look?

      Froglord (Finnfrog99) (talk) 18:56, 1 September 2026 (UTC).Reply

      • New, (barely) long enough, no plagiarism, QPQ done. The article is not well written: there is zero mention of where the man lived and did his work, it took me a while to even realize that he was Irish and in Eire. We sometimes get this type of snobbery in US- or British-themed articles, where it is forgotten that there is an outside world actually reading these articles; it is very surprising to encounter an article on Ireland where this happens -- I'm sure most readers in the US will also have trouble locating where the man actually lived, until maybe going into the third paragraph. The hook is a gimmick, and I must say I don't approve of it -- unless you're going for the April Day's batch. It is disrespectful to the reader, and to Larkin himself, that we are being attracted to the text solely by a prank, in which we "fail" to clarify that the NATO in the hook is not the usual acronym, but a rather obscure Irish group. Moreover, the hook is technically not cited, as the citation right after (identified as "Film Ireland") appears to be about a different fact -- if it cites the "communist" allegation and who issued it, please make an effort to cite it after the relevant phrase as well. I also have to wonder what the syntax means in this case: why does the bolded link end on "denounced", as if to imply that the article is about his denouncing, rather than about his entire bio? (And more quibbles: why not italicize An Phoblacht, especially after United Irishman is italicized just words before it?) Dahn (talk) 09:24, 5 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
        • Clarified where he lived in the lead. Im not changing the hook, its a perfectly normal hook, DYK hooks are like this frequently (im not saying the full name of NATO, these are supposed to be short). The film Ireland source says "The government pushed the narrative that the rent strikers were a small group of subversives only out to cause trouble, while the church denounced Matt Larkin as a communist.", and is the next source after this information is said. @Mandarax: changed the link, so you'll have to ask them for their reasoning. An phoblacht has been italicised Froglord (Finnfrog99) (talk) 11:01, 5 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
          • It is a requirement that a citation follow a hook fact; I tend to be lenient when the citation is on a fact stated right after that is implicitly tied to the hook fact -- but this is not the case here, since the citation is for Film Ireland calling him respectable; you can either duplicate the citation or make the phrase into one, for instance by replacing the dot with a semicolon. Your choice, but as we stand this is not compliant with the DYK citation requirement. Moving on: no, the Easter-egg on "NATO" will not stand, you have designed the hook precisely so as to mislead readers into thinking that a leader of the better-known NATO was called a communist by the Catholic Church. This is a way of drawing in views based not on the article's intrinsic merits, but on a joke or a prank done as a conscious editorial choice -- and you can, or at least should, only be allowed to do so on April Fools' Day. I strongly object to the hook, on policy grounds. Any clarification that "NATO's General Secretary" means something else in this context would make the hook much less appealing to, well, people getting pranked. (The absurd syntax is also unaddressed, but that's okay -- the hook should not pass in its current form either way.) Dahn (talk) 11:13, 5 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
          • @Dahn: Revisiting this. This similar "prank" hook ran today with no issues, so I dont think there should be any issues running this outside of April Fools Day, but if you still insist, I dont mind running it then. Thoughts? Froglord (Finnfrog99) (talk) 17:46, 21 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
The hook idea is brilliant. It will make a great April Day's hook. I would propose slight adjustments, namely capitalization and naming the subject:
ALT1: ... that NATO's general secretary Matt Larkin was denounced by the Catholic Church as a communist?
      Surtsicna (talk) 11:06, 13 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Nice to meet you, - interesting article, diligently sourced, (all) French sources accepted AGF. Both hooks work for me. Before I can approve, I need two things: a sentence about his death, which could be at the end of the biography (before "Painting"), and a look at the long sentence in the lead about who holds his works and mentioned them, because the grammar isn't clear. Can you split it? Other wishes: the last of his publication has no BnF no., and it remains unclear what it is. The lead should be a summary of the whole article; it looks to me as if it holds information that is nowhere else in the article (such as the long sentence). Consider writing a short true lead (which needs no references) and then begin with "Life and career". Reference numbers are normally in ascending order. - Do you have this nomination watchlisted? Readers will interpret "died during flooding" as meaning that they drowned. Until I read the article I did. Qubed (talk) 23:40, 19 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Your concern is similar to this report, which was declined and the hook was left unmodified because assuming things is not an error that requires changes. As said there "I don’t think it implies unintentionally in the slightest, but spelling out specifically that it was intentional would remove much of what makes this an effective hook". Tbhotch™ (CC BY-SA 4.0) 23:52, 19 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Would either of these alternatives work? I think they keep the hook interesting without confusing the reader. Qubed (talk) 09:49, 22 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
          • ALT3 ... that six people died of gas inhalation when their van got stuck in floodwaters next to the Cueyamil railway station, whose construction residents had previously said worsened drainage problems along the avenue?
          • ALT4 ... that after residents raised problems with the drainage system at the new Cueyamil railway station, six people died of gas inhalation after their van became stuck in floodwaters?
Alternative for ALT1, as I perceived I used the wrong tone.
          • ALT2: ... that six people died during flooding next to the Cueyamil railway station, whose construction residents had previously said had worsened drainage problems along the avenue?

@Piotrus: Actually the sport is cricket, not baseball, but I agree that the hook is too specialist for non-sports audiences. I just took a look at the article and tried to find something else that could be used. The article says that there was a draft instead of an auction, but I think that is specialist knowledge for those who don't know that T20 cricket leagues usually use player auctions instead of US-style player drafts. @Ravana: Do you have any other hook ideas? • Cited: Yes
            • Interesting: Yes
            • Other problems: No - Your hook is not in the expected format (the target article should be linked and bolded), and I'd say it lacks a bit in detail. Might I suggest "...that a 2014 peaceful anti-austerity protest in Belgium ended with multiple cars being set on fire?"
            QPQ: None required.

Overall: Thank you for writing this article, and what I assume is your DYK debut? This nomination is mostly in the green, as the article is new enough, long enough and scores very low on copyvio. The only issue is the hook itself, which should be "hookified" as I suggested. Be sure to consult WP:DYKFORMAT. I would ideally have liked to see you cite sources that detail the material damage from the protests in full text, but those news website image galleries with description should be good enough. (P.S another contributor bolded and linked the original hook while I was writing this review. My proposal for slight rewording still stands). Procrastineur (talk) 21:13, 11 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Also, I have problems with the wording too. If it ended with several cars being set on fire, then by definition it was not peaceful. I think the hook should clarify what I think was meant: that it was the intentions of the organizers that the protest be peaceful. Daniel Case (talk) 04:10, 14 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

              • Thanks @Chao Garden:! I have updated the sources (mostly the same 2 main sources + one new one for a couple of statements). For the time being I took out the sentence "This bottom water inhibits decomposition, so any organic matter or objects such as boats or trees that have sunk to the bottom may have been preserved for millennia." as while it's often repeated in news and articles on the lake, I didn't yet find a satisfactory source. I might add it back when I come up with something - it is a common feature of anoxic waters in general so not specific to this particular lake. • @KFP: thank you for making those changes! WP:DYKHFC says "The facts of the hook in the article should be cited no later than the end of the sentence in which they appear." You might want to add a citation directly at the end of those sentences. For both hooks, it looks like the Johansson applies for each? Would you be able to share a direct quote to help me verify? • @KFP: friendly ping — could you help me verify the Johansson source, assuming that's the one that applies to this hook? Just a quote would be helpful. • Comment The hook fact is not in the article at all, as we speak; and, even if it were, the wild claim about the pandemic and xenophobia would still need to be attributed, and preferably not used as the hook fact -- it is a very contentious opinion. For it to be in the article, it would also need to be from a source that specifically mentions this opinion in relation to that book by that author, not "in general" (WP:SYNTH). Also: the book by Kim, with the vague mention of "book data", cannot be a source for this factoid, even if Kim had made mention of it there. Dahn (talk) 03:25, 16 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

              • I'm coming back to this as a reviewer. From what I gather, the article seems to have been moved to mainspace on 16 Nov, which allows it to qualify. I am hesitating between arguing that it needs more work or that it needs to be completely redone (as in: it needs much more work before it can be featured on mainpage). A note on why that is: much of it is written like a blurb of sorts; we are told that X and Y reviewed her work (a common descriptor for when academics try to suggest that their work is not ignored), when the only reason to even mention those reviews would be to have details on what they say about Kim. Then we have a long list of prizes, which frankly looks like "let's all read Kim's work, it won stuff"-type content. Not good. The same goes for the phrasing of the hook. (Think of it: why would we mention that a monograph is "award-winning"? it unwittingly demeans the author by suggesting she needs that sort of blurb to prop her up; would you describe Mark Twain or Max Weber as "award-winning"?). But the most serious aspect, still unaddressed despite it being waved off above: the hook is a glaring WP:SYNTH. That's because Covid and its supposed spike in anti-Asian sentiment are nowhere mentioned in the article, and they probably shouldn't be, until we get a third-party source, cited verbatim in the article, making that explicit connection between (1) Kim's book, (2) Covid, (3) anti-Asian sentiment during Covid. (Also, let me remind you: the rise of anti-Asian sentiment during Covid is itself a factoid rather than a fact, meaning that we are under no legal requirement to believe the rise of reports about these incidents is in any way a significant rise in overall sentiment against X and Y ethnicities -- some authors believe this to be true, others question it; this is why the article that';s being linked has a vague title and very short paragraphs about very specific incidents, rather than the mass hysteria that's being depicted here. So any such claim linking Kim's book and the other two things would have to also be attributed to the person making the claim, not squeezed in as an editorial comment by wikipedia, or like a generally known, demonstrable, undebatable fact.) The hook is a no-go in this form, and I frankly struggle to find anything that would make a good hook in this article -- the issue would be solved if the author, or anyone interested, would go through sources and actually pick from them info other than "she's great and she won awards" (her new and relevant ideas, the debates she sparked with her research etc.). Finally, this also brings up the issue of formatting: the article is a mess, with the one-line paragraphs and the unnecessary subheadings. Dahn (talk) 05:57, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
              • @Unsurprising: I have struck the original hook per Dahn's review. Please propose a new hook. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 10:22, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

General: Article is new enough and long enough

              Policy compliance:

              • Adequate sourcing: No - Ref 4 and 10 rely on too much information to verify, and should be sourced to the racing record (which is unsourced) to ease up the process. Now for the minor issues:

Ref 2 just says he was a Melbourne racehorse. Ref 7 says 6 2nd and 6 3rds, and "out of 37 starts" not supported by ref 6. Ref 11 should be updated to £120,059. A few cn tags. Don't need the "Some of his political cartoons are reproduced below to the right" part since it's redundant to the captions.

              Hook eligibility:

              • Cited: No - Anything cited to an offline source needs to have a quote per WP:DYKCITE; though MacQuarie verifies ALT9a.
              • Interesting: Yes
Image: Image is freely licensed, used in the article, and clear at 100px.
              QPQ: Done.

Overall: Moved to mainspace on nom day, length 2705 B. Image is PD in the US due to being published in 1925. The pop culture references are cited to the encyclopedia entry on Drongo and pass the WP:BANANASINWORMS test, though the Fox poem should be trimmed to the first stanza or even removed outright due to copyright concerns.

Don't think ALT6/7 meet DYKINT; ALT0 doesn't have "loser" supported in the article; ALT1-4 are too wordy. The "drongo slang term" hooks are the most DYKINT but I'm proposing a more DYKINT-compliant ALT9 (the "well-performing racehorse" part should be verified by the sourcing confirming all his second and third places, we still need the quote to verify the "no-hoper" part):

@Unsurprising, Sauriazoicillus, and Launchballer: address the issues and you're good to go. (NGL if I had a nickel for every time I did a DYK about a successful loser racehorse, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird it happened twice.) ミラP@Miraclepine 22:27, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

              • I have fixed the issue with ref 2 by removing it entirely (can't remember why exactly I included it there TBH)
              • I reworded the section regarding his uncertain racing record by stating that '37 starts' was a number used by later reports rather than the contemporary news report (ref 6)
              • Removed the redundant statement regarding Wells' comics
              • Didn't even consider that the Len Fox poem would have copyright concerns despite being fully reproduced in the book! Removed that as well
              • I also realised I had gotten the timeline mixed up regarding Wells' cartoons and swapped the sections around to better reflect the timeline of events
I do have some questions and uncertainties however:
              • I'm a little unsure regarding the statement made about refs 6 and 7 as ref 7 states "five seconds placings and seven thirds" rather than '6 2nd and 6 3rds' and so should not contradict ref 6, have I missed something? Apologies if so!
              • This is, admittedly, my first time creating an article outside of the scope of WP:PAL, so I'm not as familiar with where to find sources for things like racing records, the only place I could find any racing records that mention Drongo were The Australasian Turf Registry books, do you have any pointers?
              • The cn tag on the statement that "Drongo was inbred 3 × 3 to St. Simon" feels a little redundant since the pedigree is cited and shows that St. Simon appears twice, other articles that feature inbred horses also do the same thing (whether the pedigree is cited or not).
(also that's a very fun fact, two very good nickels and hilarious since Haru Urara is one of my favourite Uma Musume characters and probably why I latched on to Drongo). Sauriazoicillus (talk) 12:54, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Sauriazoicillus: You can keep ref 2, it says he was based in Melbourne; "who was bred in Melbourne, Australia by an unknown breeder" is not supported by the ref; and Dorothy Wood and "clumsy" is unsourced (almost forgot them).
The Sporting Globe ref says "He ran in 37 events for six seconds, six thirds, several fourths and a fifth hi the Sydney Cup", while Victoria Racing Club says "Drongo finished second five times, with seven thirds" and the Daily Telegraph ref says "five seconds placings and seven thirds". That discrepancy should be addressed.
The Australasian Turf Registry should be reliable for racing records and should help with the issue with the "racing record" section, though I'd recommend trimming columns on unsupported claims.
WP:DYKCITE says All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited to a reliable source no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose)., I'd suggest adding the source to the cn tag. The other cn tag is not addressed yet; I'd suggest removing that claim since I'm used to several GAs handling the issue without stating the absence of a death date (cf. Hugh Daily).
Also, if you have access to the Australian Folklore book, you can use these to add the hook quotes; they haven't been added yet. I've struck out the rejected hooks (and fixed the formatting for ALT9(a)) for convenience. ミラP@Miraclepine 17:29, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Miraclepine: Noted, I'll add back ref 2, remove the section regarding an unknown breeder, and remove the statement about there being no recorded death date. I also have citations for Dorothy Wood being his owner in the ref list so I can just add that to the infobox.
The "clumsy" claim comes from the Australian Folklore book, would the issue with that be resolved if I added it to the in-article section next to "slow-witted"?
For the racing record section, would you recommend changing the section to surround the varying reports of his career (something like "Both contemporary and recent new articles report various numbers of first and second placements, refs here and recent news articles have claimed he had 37 starts.refs here However, The Australasian Turf Registry records only 29 races throughout Drongo's careerrefs here) or just removing the comment about the discrepancies entirely and let the racing record section be self explanatory?
And final thing; I'm very new to DYK nominations and so am very unsure how this all works past the review side, what do you mean by "...if you have access to the Australian Folklore book, you can use these to add the hook quotes" do you mean quoting sections of Drongo's entry from the book? Thanks for your patience! Sauriazoicillus (talk) 18:46, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Sauriazoicillus: About the racing record, I'd recommend a footnote about the discrepancies on the amounts of races, with each race saying Drongo raced being reference to the The Australasian Turf Registry.
WP:DYKCITE says For sources which are not readily available to the reviewer because they are off-line or behind a paywall, the nominator must provide a copy for review. This could be done by posting ... a direct quotation from the source.
In the meantime, please ping me when the issues are addressed. ミラP@Miraclepine 21:06, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

ALT2 is "It was one-time Doctor Who writer Robert Banks Stewart who recommended Bidmead for the vacant Doctor Who script editor’s job, with Bidmead having recently written a ‘fan letter’ to congratulate his former Thames colleague on his detective series Shoestring (1979/80)." I for some reason cannot find my quote for ALT0 but I honestly would prefer to leave it aside in favor of one of the others. I cleaned up the sourcing issues in the article.

I could also add a bit to the article that would allow ALT3: ... that Kate Tolo has a condition that used to be called polycystic ovarian syndrome?; shame she was diagnosed after the name change, since ("used to have PCOS" would be even better), and the fact that her sister is an Olympic medallist hasn't made it out of her website.--Launchballer 07:34, 9 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

              • Not a review but a drive-by comment: The hook is not interesting. It is not uncommon (let alone hooky) for a person to die in one place and have their remains returned to another place. Surely there must be a more interesting hook? Cbl62 (talk) 23:45, 17 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
              • Hi Cbl62, thank you for your comment. You're right — in Spanish it sounds more poetic, but in English it's just a fact without much feeling behind it. I've replaced the main hook with something about the graduate programs she founded and the students she trained, and moved the death/ashes fact out entirely, with two other alternatives kept in reserve. Your comment on the new hook would be welcome if you have time to take a look. Have a nice day! E1th0r (talk) E1th0r (talk) 13:40, 18 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
              • Thank you for proposing three new hooks. We are getting closer to approval. The article is new enough (created 9/16), plenty long enough, neutral, and appropriately sourced. The three new proposed hooks are an improvement in terms of being interesting. They are also short enough. Two remaining issues:
              1. The hook fact must appear in the article. Can you please review the new hooks to make sure that each fact is also in the article? For example, I don't find in the article the bit from alt2 about "recognition of their ancestral lands". This can be solved by adding the applicable fact to the article (with citation).
              2. It would help if you could provide translated quotes from the sources that verify each of the hook facts. Cbl62 (talk) 15:10, 18 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

I also had minor concerns with the Harrison book, given that it was published by "Dalsland Explorer" which sounded a bit too close to self-publishing, but I'm leaning towards accepting it because the author appears to be a subject expert whose university has appearently peer-reviewed it. • – @Emmanbotan: Hi. I have added a section tag and a general one about sourcing. Please take a look. The hook is interesting but not sourced to the JSTOR doc's page you gave (p. 35) per article. In fact the searcher does not find anything related to pain. Finally I would leave out so excessive SEAOFRED (paraphrasing WP:SEAOFBLUE). The rest seem to be okay (newness to mainspace, QPQ, etc.) - I would need to check copyvio later, but please address these issues first and ping me when done. @CoryGlee:, i added the link, you can download the full pdf and read it thats where i got it from.

                        • @Emmanbotan:, please do not remove the inline tag until you address that properly. See talk page. I will check if the PDF checks out. For now I can add to the review that no WP:COPYVIO issues are present (the 20.4% by Earwig) relates to scientific names. CoryGlee 16:56, 24 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

                          • I'll take over the review following Emmanbotan's request on my talk page. I have some concerns that broadly align with the previous review's, with the exception that the WP:SEAOFRED matter is not as much a concern for DYK as a reflection that there are several plant articles that need to be made. A thorough review is forthcoming soon. Best, ~ Pbritti (talk) 01:32, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
                            • I am encountering a lot of pretty blatant copyright violations in the form of clear plagarism. A pretty good example of this is a passage in the article that reads "Rarotonga's windswept, cloud-shrouded peaks and ridges, typically situated above an elevation of 350 m (1,150 ft), support a stunted, moss- and fern-draped montane forest ecosystem". This read suspiciously elegantly compared to some of the writing elsewhere in the article, so I checked the source and, lo and behold: "On windy, cloud-covered ridges and peaks on Rarotonga, generally above 350 m, exists a gnarled, moss- and fern-covered forest dominated by Metrosideros collina up to 8 m tall." I am willing to give a few days for this type of thing to be cleaned up. However, I am dangerously close to simply giving this a straight rejection. Also, if LLMs were used in writing this article, please be upfront about that. I won't tag it for deletion, but knowing if that is the case will make life easier for me if I have time to assist in cleaning things up. Best, ~ Pbritti (talk) 03:19, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Pbritti:, i have some copyright problems and plagarism. My apologies if my article is not up to the standard.

@Emmanbotan: I have time later today UTC to perform a final review. I would highly recommend you make one last pass sometime in the next 16 hours. That said, I am extraordinarily impressed by how willing you were to take on my comments. I am glad to see another invested editor in the botany space and look forward to seeing more of your work going forward. Best, ~ Pbritti (talk) 01:22, 6 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Emmanbotan: I apologize for leaving you hanging a bit. For more than a couple reasons, I would really rather not reject this nomination. However, I have noticed consistent trouble with material sourced to this, including what seem to be LLM-like inventions, significant repetitions of the same content, and forced use of synonyms that that only mask close paraphrasing. I have a little more time this week than I originally expected I would (which happily coincides with some great weather in these parts). I'll give you about 48 hours again try and clean up the article (see PlantDrew's comment on the talk page, too, but that's not really relevant for the DYK). Hook is interesting but the source used is not in the article, and the sources for the claim in the article are not easily machine translatable, and I'm not sure that a single op-ed that reads this parable this way is suitable for the claim made. A couple of source problems; the claim "It is often described as the earliest parable in the Bible" is sourced to a Wikipedia article, and there are two areas where citations are needed. • Comment: Barring the AfD/RM discussions, there's multiple obvious issues here: the term "Verity" is ambiguous & could refer to Verity, which the article even references. The smiley face's neither "Verity" itself or necessary to understand what it is. The hook(s) just aren't interesting either. "Basic image becomes meme." "Meme is popular and compared to other meme." The only interesting hook I can think of here is some word play like "... that Anne Hathaway made reference to "Verity (web series)" while promoting "Verity (film)"?" Anne Hathaway is a good attention grabber. Other than that, I don't think there's anything here. Travis Mulch (talk) 00:36, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
                                    • "Verity" is unambiguous here because of the picture. Also, I personally think 6-7 is much more click-attractive than Anne Hathaway. People will see "Verity" and "6-7" and lose their minds. The picture contributes to this. I am of course biased though because I'm Gen Z and don't watch many films. But I'm pretty sure ALT1 would blow up. –CopperyMarrow15 (talk · edits) 02:28, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
                                      • @CopperyMarrow15: That's not how DYK works. "Verity" is indistinguishable from Harvey Ball's smiley aside from eye size/placement. People will see this image and think it's about one of the far more common uses of a yellow smiley. When's the last time you saw a non-yellow smiling emoji? Walmart's used the design everywhere for decades. Hooks are decided on factual accuracy and inherent interest in those facts, not whether or not people will "lose their minds", or if the hook will "blow up". The hooks aren't interesting/appropriate for Main page viewers that aren't very young, and not familiar with Minecraft, horror series, or internet memes. Verity is the meme of the week we'll forget by next month. Anne Hathaway is an award-winning, multi-billion-dollar grossing actress who's been subject to media coverage for two decades. • Comment: I've just closed an RM from Verity (meme) to Verity (web series), I am unsure of the effects of that on this DYK, perhaps a differently focused hook is desired. Also I'm not sure of the process, should this DYK subpage be moved as well? Best, squawk7700 (talk) 20:10, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

The article was recently promoted to GA status by LastJabberwocky, but I have to say that it does not quite look like a GA to me. It may be the small sections and tiny subsections that are giving me the impression of insufficient coverage. Are you both certain that the article sufficiently covers the main aspects of the topic? Another concern is that the hook is not particularly interesting. I guess it hinges on knowing that it is unusual to become a rabbi at 18, but do not think that we can expect that from "a reader with no special knowledge". • Article was moved to mainspace on the day of the nomination. I didn't find any close paraphrasing, and the hook is cited inline and verified. The QPQ seems short to me and feels incomplete, and it seemed to have missed some of the DYK criteria. Could you recheck those? As for the hook, I'm not sure if it meets DYKINT. I understand Hansard is a fairly well-known name and was popular in Ireland, but he's not a household name internationally. I don't think the hook as currently written works, but additional context (such as mentioning his motorcycle accident, or that production continued despite his death) might make the fact work. He is well known in the theatre world in terms of the fact he wrote a tony award winning musical, so I disagree with that. Happy to add about the death being a motorcycle accident, but if im truthful I think that is overly detailed and would be better just being before his death. The theatre world is not the general audience world, and hooks are ideally supposed to be targeted towards the broadest audience per WP:DYKINT. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 11:14, 8 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

General: Article is new enough and long enough

                                            Policy compliance:

                                            Hook eligibility:

                                            • Cited: No - For ALT1, not at the sentence where the claim is made. The source does not support the claim that this is one of the steepest grades in the Interstate Highway System.
                                            • Interesting: No - ALT0 I find unlikely to be interesting to those who are unfamiliar with this highway (and I've driven on this stretch multiple times). ALT1 is interesting.
                                            • Other problems: No - As noted above, CrashForensics.com appears to be self-published.

QPQ: No - I know Epicgenius's DYK noms are almost always clean, but a simple checkmark does not demonstrate that all the DYK criteria were checked.
                                            Overall: Bneu2013, a few things to address here. Dclemens1971 (talk) 23:50, 9 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Has Crash Forensics been determined to be unreliable? Considering that they're an expert on the subject matter, I don't why why they wouldn't be. I'll see if I can find another source that explicitly states it's one of the steepest stretches of the Interstate system, even though I lean towards the first hook. I also disagree that ALT0 isn't interesting, as it is extremely rare for any road to dip into another state and then re-emerge in the original one. I-24 is the only Interstate in three or more states that does it. I think providing context that it's in a mountainous area makes it more interesting. This isn't the same as saying something vague like "I-24 goes through four states" or even "the majority of I-24 is in Tennessee."

Also, I didn't just assume the QPQ was adequate because of the nominator; I checked all the hooks to make sure they were cited properly, and used DYKcheck to make sure the other criteria were met. I don't know how to prove this, but I did. Bneu2013 (talk) 03:36, 10 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

It's possible the publisher's site could be cited instead, some review site that contains the info, or even the book itself as a primary source. The first two hooks are unsuitably WP:SURPRISE. ALT3 seems fine, but I'd add "to be dark, damaged, and troubled, unlike books such as Bridget Jones's Diary", or something along those lines, as what it means isn't obvious. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 17:17, 9 October 2026 (UTC) Reply

Their validity is ultimately left to be determined by the reviewer and promoter.

I actually want to propose a hook that the lions were moved to SAFTI after demands treat the sculptures with "due respect", but the lead is kind of missing information that in context, similarities were pointed out between the new lion head logo and the sculptures. I might revamp the lead a little to reflect that.--ZKang123 (talk · contribs) 01:42, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

(The concept of this being a white elephant isn't specifically mentioned in the source either, but I'm willing to give it a pass because a white elephant is a concept, not a proper noun.) Per WP:DYKHOOK, "The wording of the article, hook, and source should all agree with each other with respect to who is providing the information"; this hook almost meets that, but needs some tweaking so that the article at least aligns with both the hook and the source.

Can I suggest that you include that bit of the EU directive or reference it? I'll look at other aspects now Victuallers (talk) 10:26, 9 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

I did see that, and just ended up just linking straight to fruit preserves since the article specifically says they can be made with vegetables. I agree that it's more confusing than helpful, so I've just piped the link, made a note of the EU directive at the end, and broken out a lead since the body was getting too long. Moore of Denver designed the $260,000 structure and conceived the 40-foot-high tilted concrete panels that serve as wall and roof. ... The concrete panels’ enabled construction crews to raise the church in four days, using a giant crane to swing the 16-ton panels into place." Rocky Mountain News, 1964

Gen. Grant and his party started down Rogers Gap Road, which then had just one steep hairpin curve, or "V" at the top. One Union officer described this most treacherous part "as composed of logs, one end of which rests on the side of the mountain, the other end supported in a horizontal position by props, thus forming a sort of corduroy road [N]ear the summit, a stream of water ran down the mountain's side through the interstices [small openings] of the logs. It was a rickety, insecure, makeshift of a road." Several wagon drivers and mules plunged to their death down the mountainside during their journey. Grant's horse slipped and fell on his leg during his trek, most likely at or near the "V."" Chattanooga Times Free Press

It looks like like Eesti Rahva Muuseumi Aastaraamat translates as Yearbook of the Estonian National Museum and can go in the journal= parameter. I'll let you do it as the one familiar with the source! I'm sympathetic to editors reliant on non-English journal articles and happy to spot check a couple via machine translation in the name of WiR. Food history was such an emergent discipline in the thirties that the original hook should work with a year included. :) Cedarshadow (talk) 03:09, 9 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
