Henry Henderson Institute
[edit]Thankyou for your creation thankyou on Henry Henderson Institute. I did the best I could, and it's gratifying to see that other editors have since done better.
I have no recollection of starting that article. It must have been a spinoff from Henry Henderson (missionary), another article which I don't remember starting, but which almost certainly arose because of a bad link to DAB page Henry Henderson. Free Church missionaries were never one of my specialist areas, but I do remember starting John Mackenzie (missionary) because of a DABlink - a remarkable man, from the back of beyond, who from southern Africa raised such a stink in Westminster that It resulted three-quarters of a century later in the formation of a post-colonial country, Botswana. I don't share his religious opinions, but admire both his political activities, and the way he became disgusted with politics and returned to his vocation. IMO he deserves a better memorial, but he wouldn't have cared.
I approve of the products of Knockando distillery. I think it is safe to say that John Mackenzie would not have. Narky Blert (talk) 17:05, 13 June 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks NB, I'm impressed by these articles. Blantyre mission seems to have been a force for good. Missionary Scott was removed for being too friendly and for contemplating the idea of black ministers. Not sure of the link to the distillery???... but I can see how that idea might invade your narrative? Thanks for your work. I see you mentioned in the creation of good stuff. I'm focusing on a project called motokazi.org where we are bigging up Malawian women. Best wishes Roger aka Victuallers (talk) 07:48, 15 June 2026 (UTC)
Eiffel Women thanks
[edit]- Hi, Just wanted to drop you a line to thank you for your sterling work on the 72, especially tracking down some of their images.
- There is an online editathon/get together with WikiMediaUK on the Eiffel Women via Zoom this Saturday 10.30 am UK time for which I am gradually tidying up the Googledoc this week. https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/women-of-the-eiffel-tower-edit-a-thon-tickets-1990315293621 if you fancy joining or its your sort of thing. There will be a profession and place(s) of education and employment columns listed by the time I finish, so hoping to get the networks connected through blue links.
- Thanks once again for your editing on the 72 - its has made such a difference!
- MumphingSquirrel (talk) 21:57, 15 June 2026 (UTC)
- Hi MS, saw your great work. I joined in early as I worked on the 72 men a long time ago. I look at the news and it seems to have gone quiet on the 72 women. I'm guessing its because it was associated with the previous mayor and the current one is not one of her fans. However he woyld be a brave mayor to drop the idea. I have created Femmes et Sciences and its destined for DYK and the front page. Can you do a few edits and checkovers? It would be good to get all of the recent editors to be credited for the DYK. Victuallers (talk) 08:57, 16 June 2026 (UTC)
- Good to see you are taking a renewed interest in the Eiffel Women. I was wondering if you could add a fair use image to Denise Barthomeuf. You're much better on these images than I am.--Ipigott (talk) 12:52, 18 June 2026 (UTC)
- Hi Ian, I can't find a picture of her of any description. I have looked at every one I think. Victuallers (talk) 14:13, 18 June 2026 (UTC)
- Although it's not very clear, I thought the one in this article might do.--Ipigott (talk) 09:05, 19 June 2026 (UTC)
- good spot, I hadn't seen that one. It's now in the article. Pleased to do another if you find fair use images where we have none. Victuallers (talk) 16:28, 19 June 2026 (UTC)

The DCWC is back!
[edit]
Hey Victuallers, the Developing Countries WikiContest is back for a third year, and sign-ups are now open! The contest will run from 1 July to 30 September, and the objective remains the same: improve as many articles relating to developing countries as you can to help fight systemic bias on Wikipedia.
Thanks to everyone who answered the call for coordinators, and please welcome the new faces on the coordinator team: the 2024 Gold Belt Buckle winner Generalissima (talk · contribs); and the record-holder for most India-related submissions in 2024, Magentic Manifestations (talk · contribs)! Following feedback from last year, adjustments have been made to the scoring rules; discussion can be found on the contest talk page.
If you have any questions, please leave a message on the contest talk page or contact one of the coordinators: Arconning (talk · contribs), Generalissima (talk · contribs), Magentic Manifestations (talk · contribs), sawyer777 (talk · contribs), or TechnoSquirrel69 (talk · contribs). [edit]
Thanks for uploading File:Helen Kalvak copper artist.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of non-free use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 17:23, 20 June 2026 (UTC)

I just added a short article on this Malawian bishop. I was wondering if you are in contact with some active Malawian Wikipedians, and if they could perhaps add a picture of Chitsulo? Or of his statue? There is evidently a statue of him in Mua at the Chamare Museum, part of the Kungoni Centre of Culture and Art. Brianyoumans (talk) 03:19, 21 June 2026 (UTC)
- Hi Brian, I have added an image and a few editing tips if you look at my edit summaries. Nice article.... any interest in leading Malawian women, their birth places, churches, etc? Victuallers (talk) 10:17, 21 June 2026 (UTC)
- I would have to say... not particularly? When I see a subject that I think should have an article, sometimes I try to write it. I got interested in Bishop Chitsulo because I was going through some of the neglected surname articles in Zimbabwe and Malawi, adding entries to them. I did that with Moyo for instance. It's not an area I have a *particular* interest in, although old friends of mine did go to Malawi through the Peace Corps many years ago. Thanks for adding the image; I am not up on the niceties of the copyright issues, so I'm glad someone else dealt with it.Brianyoumans (talk) 16:12, 21 June 2026 (UTC)
- Oh, thanks for the editing tips. But, um, I suspect they depend on me using some sort of editing tools, which I don't - I still type out all the tags and stuff as I have for the last twenty years. I lazily figure that someone will come along and update my formatting, if they think it matters.Brianyoumans (talk) 16:18, 21 June 2026 (UTC)
- I think you suspect incorrectly. (Which Moyo?). You just click in the right place and refs tidy themselves. I type tags too. Updating formatting is trivial but knowing which reference applies to which sentence will require a bit of repeated work. Victuallers (talk) 16:35, 21 June 2026 (UTC)
- I will give that a try. I meant that I had added names and reorganized the article Moyo, which is a disambiguation page.Brianyoumans (talk) 17:13, 21 June 2026 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Valerie Elizabeth Desmore died 2008.jpg
[edit]
A tag has been placed on File:Valerie Elizabeth Desmore died 2008.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a non-free file from a commercial source (e.g. Associated Press, Getty Images), where the file itself is not the subject of sourced commentary. If you can explain why the file can be used under the non-free content guidelines, please add the appropriate non-free use tag and rationale.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. 999REAL 💬 ⬆ 15:43, 25 June 2026 (UTC)

DYK for Ceciwa Khonje
[edit]On 1 July 2026, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Ceciwa Khonje, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that exiled Ceciwa Khonje's role in achieving Malawi's independence was "rubbed out of history"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Ceciwa Khonje. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Ceciwa Khonje), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to nominate it.

[edit]On 6 July 2026, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Nathalie Drach-Temam, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. Marianne Grunberg-Manago
[edit]Hi, thanks for all your work on the Eiffel Women, particularly the image sourcing. It does help bring the pages alive. I am a bit concerned that the new image you added to Marianne Grunberg-Manago isn't of her. It doesn't look like any other photos of her and its not from a brilliant source. These two sources have clear images of her for comparison https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0300908413000631 and https://www.cimetiere-russe.org/en/marianne-grunberg-manago-3700 Would you be able to revert to the original image? Thanks MumphingSquirrel (talk) 11:40, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- Oh dear, I'll look at it. The original image was poor- have you spotted another? You might also look at DYK on the front page today. I think you/we will get some extra clicks on the Eiffel Women as she was the first woman to champion the idea. I know its "the 72" but we also ought to credit the people who put them there. I've written three articles and there are more to write IMO. Great work by you and yours. Victuallers (talk) 11:45, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- thanks for sorting that! great to see today's DYK. Yvette Amice was on yesterday's for death anniversary too.
- I've got an ever growing list of pages that can internconnect on the project Googledoc if you fancy a look https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1VErPd7Rmxxyll0LoD9EC6FRO8zWBfgzf8g_QilT_qTw/edit?gid=0#gid=0
- Not sure the project will ever be completely finished! :) MumphingSquirrel (talk) 18:13, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- I don't think anything on Wikipedia is ever completely finished. I keep getting messages suggesting I should update many of the GA-rated articles which worked on ten or so years ago. We will no doubt be able to make further imårpvements on the basis of interesting press articles on the 72 next year when their names are finally unveiled on the Eiffel Tower.--Ipigott (talk) 19:03, 9 July 2026 (UTC)

Your DYK
[edit]Awesome you're having a go at DYK! Maybe minor rewording of the hook to make it clearer for people without context? '... that lawyer Hazel Miseleni believes that reducing Malawi's high child marriage rate to 20% would make Malawi $500m better off by 2030?' (I would have suggested it on the DYK page, but don't know how DYK process works lol.) Dsp13 (talk) 23:50, 1 August 2026 (UTC)
- More seriously, the numbers in the hook look as though they have got a bit exaggerated in the summarization. The World Bank says child marriage has already cost Malawi $167m. HM & RB suggest ending child marriage could save Malawi $500m over 15 years, including education savings of $108m by 2030. There is a government strategy to reduce child marriage to 20% by 2030. Dsp13 (talk) 00:04, 2 August 2026 (UTC)
- Cool. DYK is fairly friendly, just do it and say "sorry, new here". I will change the hook. If you can fix the figures in the article then that would be useful and justify our 3 way split of the credit. Victuallers (talk) 08:42, 2 August 2026 (UTC)
- I've reviewed the hook as it currently stands. I have a couple of questions but they should be easy enough to address EmergentAnarchy (talk) 09:33, 5 August 2026 (UTC)

DCWC August update
[edit]The 2026 Developing Countries WikiContest has been running for a month now, so let's check in with the competition so far!
As of the time of writing, our top contestants are:
Vanderwaalforces (submissions) ahead of the pack with 715 points, with two FAs and many GAs on the monarchs of the Kingdom of Benin;- Simongraham (submissions) with 291 points, mostly with GAs on jumping spiders, alongside various GAN and FAC reviews;
- Jaguarnik (submissions) with 240 points, mostly from an FA on the 1945 film Ivan the Terrible;
Grnrchst (submissions) with 215 points, mostly from GAs on anarchist history in various countries, alongside many GA reviews, and;
Vestrian24Bio (submissions) tied for 4th with 215 points, with an FL and four GAs on Indian cricket!
These competitors are in the lead, but if past experience is any indication, big shake-ups might still await us in the contest. If you're looking for a way to boost your position, we got a table of review requests from fellow participants—you can rack up a lot of points through reviews, and it might just convince others to review your own nominations! You can also look through the eligible reviews page to find other articles to review, with highlights for articles eligible for the 1.5× multiplier. The coordinators would like to thank Jaguarnik (submissions) for his work to keep this page up to date.
Thank you so much for all your work in the contest so far, dear participants, and keep on the good fight against systemic bias on our wiki! Have any questions? [edit]
Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. Regarding your recent edits to Amina Kajiya when you modified the page, you introduced unknown parameters. Specifying |some_param=some_variable does not always mean that variable will display. The |some_param= needs to be defined in the template in order to work. You can look at the documentation for the template being used, but it is also helpful to use the preview button before saving an edit; this helps find any errors that have been made and ensures that the values added are displaying correctly. Below the edit box is a Show preview button. Pressing this will show what the page will look like without actually saving it. It is highly recommended that editors use this before saving. Note I have likely fixed the error by now so check the history of the page to see how it was fixed. If you have any questions of if I can help explain further, please let me know! You can also contact the help desk for assistance.

Percival Allen
[edit]Blimey, I had completely forgotten about her. How did you dig up my ancient draft? Anyway, thanks for the thanks. I scribbled that down in October 2019, why? Because she made the very first gramophone recordings of Richard Strauss's opera Elektra in around 1909, along with my great-grandfather Frederic Austin, before it had even received its first performance in Britain under Thomas Beecham. She had a big voice. I inherited the single-sided HMV 78 rpm recordings of the opera through my dad. I have a collection of around 1,500 78 rpm discs and a 1930's EMG Model X wind-up gramophone to play them on (similar model is pictured). Enthuse me enough, (I certainly need encouragement) and I might finish the draft and publish it. Allen seems to have given the first UK concert performance of Wagner's Die Walküre, again with Austin, in 1908. A Chronicle of First Musical Performances in the United Kingdom 1893-2000 Vols 3 & 4, p. 79.
Best wishes, MinorProphet (talk) 23:35, 10 August 2026 (UTC)
- Oh I found her because I was looking for Women in Red before 1900. I was intending to create a start and only later did I find your version which far exceeded my ambitions. I suggest that you might consider pasting all/lots of it on top of my stub/start. Thank you for your part in this! I brought three pictured "girls" to the main page, on the 150th anniversary of their appearance ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:35, 13 August 2026 (UTC)
- I liked the special effect photo of them in the water. Impressive. Victuallers (talk) 22:33, 13 August 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you! - Another day of two bios in the news section of the main page, and Jill Gomez is my favourite, - yesterday's story! Places of 8/8 are particularly bright, matching the Voces8 concert in our little town that day that you would have loved. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:05, 19 August 2026 (UTC)
- Ileana Cotrubaș is on the main page, also my story --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:04, 26 August 2026 (UTC)
Image for École Polytechnique Féminine
[edit]Hi Roger. In connection with the Eiffel Women, Balance person has created an article on École Polytechnique Féminine. Creative commons comes up with these three images- Could you extract the one on the right and add it to commons and perhaps include it in the article? That would be a great help.--Ipigott (talk) 15:15, 18 August 2026 (UTC)
- I think I did it. The image I think you were referring to, was on commons. Correct? Victuallers (talk) 22:42, 18 August 2026 (UTC)
- Yes, thanks, that's tho one. I did not realize it was already on Commons. I should have been able to introduce it myself.--Ipigott (talk) 07:56, 19 August 2026 (UTC)

More help needed with images
[edit]I'm creating an article on Marie-Isabelle Archinard in connection with Event:Women who worked with Marie Curie. She died in 1995 but there are several images of her from the 1930s, such as those in this account. Can these be used via Commons or do we need a fair use approach? Perhaps you can help.--Ipigott (talk) 15:24, 31 August 2026 (UTC)
- Sure, I did an anonymous one, another (with her brothers) had a signature so that would be in copyright if the photographer died after 1956. Victuallers (talk) 16:02, 31 August 2026 (UTC)
A slightly belated Thank you from the Eiffel Women Project
[edit]| Hi Roger,
Thank you for all your hard work and the huge amounts of time you put into The Eiffel Women Editathon this summer. The 72 names won't be on the Eiffel Tower quite yet (2027 has been suggested), but we have made sure that they are on wiki and looking good! The picture is a cartoon of Madame Saqui tightroping her way across Paris, connecting the C19th rebuilding of the city - which feels like a suitable image for connecting the 72 women across Wikipedia. |
MumphingSquirrel (talk) 11:51, 1 September 2026 (UTC)
- It was great to see that you and Ian had taken up the project. It was originally suggested as a backdrop to the Women in Red Wikimania poster. I expected that we might get most of them with start articles in French and English, but you guys overshot the target. All 72 and others involved in the identification of the names - I suspect Marie-Isabelle Archinard is another bit of collateral benefit and see here. I regret that we don't have images of many of these and particularly in non-English wikis but maybe the fuss of the names being installed might draw attention to this. Thanks for the contribution and camaraderie. Roger aka Victuallers (talk) 15:12, 1 September 2026 (UTC)
Question About Creating a New Article Page
[edit]Dear Victuallers,

I would like to ask how I can create a new article page. Could you please let me know what steps I need to follow and from what point I am allowed to start creating new article pages?
I would appreciate your guidance.
