Instructions for nominators

[edit]

This page is for those nominations that have already been approved and are waiting to be promoted. If yours has been approved but has not yet been run on the main page, it should either be on this page or will soon be moved here, or already promoted to a Prep area or Queue ahead of an appearance on the main page.

If you wish to create a new nomination, please go to the Template talk:Did you know page; there are instructions there in a section similar to this one on how to nominate an article for DYK.

Frequently asked questions

[edit]

Backlogged?

[edit]

This page is often backlogged. As long as your submission is still on the page, it will stay there until someone promotes it to a preparation area. To alleviate this problem, we sometimes change hooks twice per day (every 12 hours) instead of once per day (every 24 hours); see WP:DYKROTATE for details.

Where is my hook?

[edit]

If you can't find the nomination you submitted to the nominations page, and it also isn't on this page, in most cases it means your article has been approved and is either in one of the prep areas, has been promoted from prep to a queue, or is on the main page.

If the nominated hook is in none of those places, then the nomination has probably been rejected. Such a rejection usually only occurs if it was at least a couple of weeks old and had unresolved issues for which any discussion had gone stale. If you think your nomination was unfairly rejected, you can query this on the DYK discussion page, but as a general rule such nominations will only be restored in exceptional circumstances.

Instructions for other editors

[edit]

How to promote an accepted hook

[edit]
  • See Wikipedia:Did you know/Preparation areas for full instructions.
  • In one window, open the DYK nomination subpage of the hook you would like to promote.
  • In another window, open the prep set you intend to add the hook to.
  • In the prep set...
    • Paste the hook into the hook area (be sure to not paste in that that)
    • Paste the credit information ({{DYKmake}} and/or {{DYKnom}}) into the credits area.
    • Add an edit summary, e.g., "Promoted [[Jane Fonda]]", preview, and save
  • Back on DYK nomination page...
    • change {{DYKsubpage to {{subst:DYKsubpage
    • change |passed= to |passed=yes
    • Add an edit summary, e.g., "Promoted original hook to Prep 3", preview, and save

How to remove a hook from the prep areas or queue

[edit]
  • Edit the prep area or queue where the hook is and remove the hook and the credits associated with it.
  • Go to the hook's nomination subpage (there should have been a link to it in the credits section).
    • View the edit history for that page
    • Go back to the last version before the edit where the hook was promoted, and revert to that version to make the nomination active again.
    • Add a new icon on the nomination subpage to cancel the previous tick and leave a comment after it explaining that the hook was removed from the prep area or queue, and why, so that later reviewers are aware of this issue.
  • Add a transclusion of the template back to the nominations page so that reviewers can see it. It goes under the date that it was first created/expanded/listed as a GA. You may need to add back the day header for that date if it had been removed from the nominations page.
  • If you removed the hook from a queue, it is best to either replace it with another hook from one of the prep areas, or to leave a message at WT:DYK asking someone else to do so.

Nominations

[edit]

Special occasion holding area

[edit]
Do not nominate articles in this section—nominate all articles in the nominations section on the regular nominations page, under the date on which the article was created or moved to mainspace, or the expansion began, or it was listed as a Good Article; be sure to indicate in the nomination any request for a specially timed appearance on the main page.
Note: Articles intended to be held for special occasion dates should be nominated within seven days of creation, start of expansion, or promotion to Good Article status. The nomination should be made between at least one week prior to the occasion date, to allow time for reviews and promotions through the prep and queue sets, but not more than two months in advance. The proposed occasion must be deemed sufficiently special by reviewers. The timeline limitations, including the two month maximum, may be waived by consensus, if a request is made at WT:DYK, but requests are not always successful. Discussion clarifying the hold criteria can be found here: ; discussion setting the two month limit can be found here: .
April Fools' Day hooks are exempted from the timeline limit; see Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/Did You Know.
Note for promoters: please be sure to add an "invisible" comment after a hook when you've placed it in prep, noting that it's a special occasion hook and including the date it is supposed to run. This should keep the hook from being moved after promotion, as sometimes happens to hooks when a queue needs a slot filled or a prep set needs to be made more balanced by swapping hooks between preps.

Overall: Wow. It is amazing for a VTuber of this extent to enter a baseball game (especially one at the World Baseball Classic) scale, not just as a fan, but also as the start caller! I can read and understand some Kanji, and I verified the nomination using a checklist accordingly. Furthermore, you caught eye of this special occasion and brought this interesting fact to attention, which it certainly deserves at the Main Page. You certainly have my green flag! QPQ complete, article (which mentions and cites the hook) doesn't flag WP:COPYVIO (4.8% according to Earwig), and her "play ball" call does not directly discredit/undermine anyone else, so congratulations on your 22nd nomination! :) Unsurprising  📝 🗣️💬 👥 01:15, 18 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Overall: Nice work. Both rather negative hooks, I'd opt for ALT1 to avoid antagonising the Swifties while encouraging readers to find out which two songs it refers to. 13 December is within two months so I'll put this into the SOHA. Max263 (talk) 18:07, 3 November 2026 (UTC)Reply

I don't see how such negative hooks will be of much interest to readers. Why not opt for something about the song's lyrics instead? SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 00:56, 4 November 2026 (UTC)Reply

I do think it is a very interesting hook and readers (myself included) will be very interested to find out why? (and it is The Guardian saying it, and not some low-grade RS, which makes it even more interesting). Aszx5000 (talk) 10:15, 4 November 2026 (UTC)Reply

Overall: Nice article on a lovely song. All looks good to approve at least ALT0 and ALT2; I'm less sure about ALT1 because it is intriguing, but it feels to me like it'd intrigue people wanting to know what Milkshake Mass is (which the article doesn't go into, though the source does) rather than about the song. Minor quibble - should "docile" in ALT0 be in quotes, as it's direct from the source?

Not about DYK criteria: I was struck by the quotes in source 1 of the Westermeyer book in turn quoting Cooney about his choice of tune - they're very lively. If it'd been my article I'd've happily stuck in one of those and built the hook from it (e.g. DYK ... that a popular Catholic hymn borrows the tune of "a quasi-nationalistic song [...] about a plot to win over a beautiful girl"?, or the quote about "joie de vivre in the midst of penury and oppression"). Is there a reason you opted not to include those - is it because it's a quote at two removes? Obleronet (talk) 17:44, 26 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

        • New enough, long enough and within policy. Earwig is clean, with no neutrality or copyvio concerns. No QPQ is required. Both hooks are interesting and appear in the article. ALT1 is supported as written. ALT0 is basically supported, but the two cited sources use different geographic wording: one supports Marvel’s first convention exhibition in Asia, while the other says its first official convention appearance in East Asia. If you want to keep “Asia”, I’d suggest something like: “... that Singapore Comic Con hosted Marvel Comics first convention exhibition in Asia in 2010?” Please also add citations to the Conventions table. HerBauhaus · talk 13:35, 14 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
        • @Robertsky: Thanks, the table citations look good now. Just two small housekeeping points remain: could you please strike ALT0 and add the revised wording as ALT0a, and add “in Asia” to the Loki sentence in the article so that ALT1 is explicitly supported in the text? After that, everything should be good to go. HerBauhaus · talk 05:58, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

        • Before I do a full review, I have a few preliminary points/ questions. 1) This article is generally a good addition to Wikipedia's coverage of Jordan's geography. 2) The Messiah concert, which is just one recent event, is given far too much weight in the article as a whole. There do not to be two separate paragraphs, spelling out what was performed and how it was funded, for this one event. Are you okay with cutting down that part of the article, while keeping the basic fact given in the DYK hook? 3) For the 2020 event I could not find in the source anything to support "attended by approximately 500 people". Do you have a source for that number? 4) The article mentioned Claude Reignier Conder as a foreign visitor to the village but I found no mention of him in the source. do you have a source that connects him to the topic? MartinPoulter (talk) 16:41, 28 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@MartinPoulter: Thanks. I've trimmed the two paragraphs regarding the concert. Can no longer remember or find the sources where I read "500 people" and "visited by Conder" so they have been dropped from the article. Makeandtoss (talk) 08:20, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Very grateful for User:Makeandtoss's prompt and helpful response to my questions. There were some small improvements needed to grammar and to citations, but they were simple enough that I've made them myself. This is new enough, easily long enough, and a good example of neutral Wikipedia style, with careful inline sourcing. Earwig finds no copyright problem; I'm happy this is original text. The required two QPQs have been done.
The hook is appropriately formatted, stated in the article, and supported by inline citations. Given that Mukawir is such a small village, its hosting of a big orchestral performance is surprising, and the John the Baptist connection is something not every village can boast. All articles linked in the hook are well-developed.
I don't pass the image. Kudos to the nominator for sharing free pictures of this cultural event, but almost all of this image is taken up with the audience and with the night sky. The performance itself and the view of Machaerus are a little patch of pixels. It's very hard to see from the thumbnail what the image is of. The article and the hook (minus "(pictured)" ) are good to go. MartinPoulter (talk) 11:28, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
@MartinPoulter: Thanks for the detailed review. Please find some other options for the picture: cropped, , lit up for the performance specifically. Makeandtoss (talk) 11:40, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

I'm trying the cropped version with the main page template. I still don't think it will be clear on the front page. The photo itself adds a lot to the article and you've done a very good thing by sharing it. I just think in this main page thumbnail rendering, it's not going to be clear to the reader what two significant things are in the image. I think the second image makes the problem of visibility worse, and then the third one of the mountain does not illustrate the concert. MartinPoulter (talk) 15:40, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

        • Hello! I love organized labor topics; thank you for putting in the hard work for this subject! Also, thank you for completing two QPQs. Article is both new enough (only created two days ago) and long enough (5052 characters).

Sourcing seems excellent: the bibliography contains one academic work and one book from a subject matter expert. Neutrality-wise, the article focuses mostly on the experience of the striking workers, which is typical for modern organized labor scholarship. Management and other anti-strike powers are given a decent amount of voice considering this.

EARWIG showed no copyvios, but since most of the sources in the article are offline, I will take extra care to check for copyvios during my spotcheck. Article is well-organized and presentable. The images and the infobox look great as well. However, I don't think the image shown on this nomination is great for the DYK page, simply because it's a little difficult to tell he's being arrested at a glance. It's a good image, just not right for DYK I think.

Out of all the hooks, ALT1 is my pick. It is succinct, directly backed by the source and the article, and it is intriguing. "Red-baiting" is an eye-catching term, and is likely to attract unfamiliar readers.

          I am accepting ALT1 for this nomination. 296cherry (talk) 00:29, 18 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

No copyright violations detected, or other issues found. Hook is verifiable, but not interesting. It was common for stucco artisans to begin as masons or bricklayers, so the progression here is not surprising or interesting. You would find this a common thread through the history of stucco artists. We need to find something hookier than this to pass WP:DYKHOOKSTYLE. Please propose new hooks below.4meter4 (talk) 21:13, 18 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
          • @4meter4: I see ALT0's appeal somewhat differently. The point is not simply that Simonetti moved between trades, but that he progressed from a bricklayer to a royal court appointment. For readers without specialist knowledge of seventeenth-century building trades, I think that contrast in status is intriguing. I appreciate that masonry and stucco work were closely related, but this does not necessarily make appointment to a royal court commonplace. While hook interest is subjective, I believe ALT0 has genuine appeal for general readers. I have nevertheless prepared ALT1 below, which I believe also offers an interesting angle for a general audience.
          • ALT1: ... that the Simonettihaus, named after Swiss stucco artist Giovanni Simonetti, was saved from demolition more than 300 years after it was built?

Translation: "Between 1699 and 1705, the two-storey half-timbered building with a high hipped roof was built outside the town for the Berlin nobleman Friedrich von Meder. [...] The stucco ceilings in Baron von Meder's residence are also attributed to Simonetti and his workshop. The High Baroque ceilings are so well preserved that they now give the half-timbered building its name. The Schloss Coswig (Anhalt) association also saved the building from demolition at the last moment in 2007."

@HerBauhaus: I understand what you are saying but again the system of artist patronage is relatively common fact when writing on artists and musicians from this period. We literally have thousands of articles on opera singers, painters, sculptors, instrumentalists, etc. that were all employed by nobility and supported by the various court systems. I write quite a lot on singers from 16th to 18th centuries, and most of them were attached to one of the courts. Basically the normal progression for anyone who did anything notable in the arts was to get training, start at the bottom, gain notice for their talent by a duke/ king/ prince, or pope/ cardinal /archbishop, get a court or church appointment, and then work for the patron. This was the system of making great art and music. It was all tied back to the courts or the church for the most part.
At some point we have to consider what's typical when approving hooks, otherwise we would be running very similar resume hooks for 15th to 18th century artists and musicians at DYK. That said, perhaps my knowledge of the time period is coloring my take on the hook, so I will go ahead and approve it for consideration by the promoter. It may be that someone who doesn't spend their time reading and writing on artists during this time period would find the fact interesting. For me it just reads as typical.4meter4 (talk) 14:30, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
          • Approving both hooks which are verified to the cited sources. The promoter can decide which they prefer. @HerBauhaus: I might suggest creating an article on Simonettihaus which could then easily be made a double nom. If you decide to do that ping me, so I can re-review. It would certainly strengthen the case for using Alt1. Best,4meter4 (talk) 14:30, 20 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

The article is new enough, long enough and within policy. QPQ has been done, there is no image. The hook is nicely formulated, but slightly problematic. The part about the newspaper being supported by the income from the harvest is fine, it is verified (using Google translate) from the online source, which seems reliable. However, the part quoting it as the "only Ukrainian-language daily newspaper in the Russian Empire" is not verifiable to me, as it is cited to an off-line source in Ukrainian. It is also a problematic statement: it could be understood as the only Ukrainian-language daily newspaper ever, but the article tells us it was preceded by another Ukrainian-language newspaper. In any case, this statement borders on WP:EXCEPTIONAL and should ideally be supported by at least more than one source. Alternatively, I would suggest a tweaked hook: ALT 1 "... that circulation numbers of a Ukrainian-language daily newspaper in the Russian Empire depended on the amount of harvest collected by its owner?" which is still captivating. What do you think, Skoropadsky? Yakikaki (talk) 09:02, 24 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

"In the book’s opening section, Harari sets out to refute what he calls the “naive view of information.” This is the idea that when humans gather more information, they have a greater share of truth, which will in turn bring them greater wisdom and greater power. To the contrary, Harari argues, there is no correlation at all between information, truth and the ability to hold sway over other people. What binds human information networks together is not primarily the truth but stories. "

                • No QPQ required. Article was expanded on 20 September and nominated three days later in the time frame allowed. Prose text was at 393 characters and is now over 2400 characters, so expansion checks out. Hook is interesting and verified to the Washington Post with an inline citation. A minor quibble, "famous" is listed at MOS:PUFFERY as a word to avoid, and the the fame of the writer/historian isn't mentioned in the article. We generally try to avoid that word without attribution, and at present its not supported by the sources/text in the article. We'll need to remove that word in order for me to approve the hook which will still be interesting even without calling the author famous.

                    • New enough, long enough, no QPQ required, no evidence of copyvio. Hook is interesting but the source used is not in the article, and the sources for the claim in the article are not easily machine translatable, and I'm not sure that a single op-ed that reads this parable this way is suitable for the claim made. A couple of source problems; the claim "It is often described as the earliest parable in the Bible" is sourced to a Wikipedia article, and there are two areas where citations are needed. Balabush, let me know when you've been able to address these. Dclemens1971 (talk) 23:26, 9 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Dclemens1971 Thanks! I replaced the Wikipedia citation with Easton's and Smith's Bible dictionaries, sourced one {{cn}} and removed the other unsourced section, and added the Standard piece to the article. Balabush (talk) 16:27, 10 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Balabush can you provide a translation of the relevant passage in this source that supports the hook claim? As I mentioned above, I'd like to see more than a single op-ed used as a source for this claim. Thanks. Dclemens1971 (talk) 00:47, 11 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Dclemens1971 Thanks for the patience. Here's what I did:
                    • Replaced the Wikipedia citation with Easton's and Smith's Bible dictionaries.
                    • Sourced one {{cn}} and removed the other section, which I couldn't source.
                    • Added the Standard piece to the article, plus more support for the hook: the Encyclopaedia Judaica (the good trees "evaded their duty"), a 2025 essay by Justin Hawkins comparing the fable to Plato's Republic, and two Hebrew pieces (Maariv 1974, Tzipi Livni 2015). Hebrew quotes and translations are now in the citations.
                    • The Maariv passage you asked about, translated: We have not understood who the truly condemned are in the drama of the trees. Three are condemned: the olive, the fig and the vine. Not the crowd of trees: they turned to the bramble only for lack of choice. Not the bramble: it did not push itself forward, but was invited by the public.
Let me know if anything else needs fixing.
Also, a side question: do you think this article has a realistic shot at GA down the line? If so, what would you see as the main gaps? Balabush (talk) 06:09, 11 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Good to go. And while I don't see any big gaps for GA, I'm not an expert in this area so can't be sure of the gaps. Dclemens1971 (talk) 23:28, 11 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

                    • Article was recently expanded 5x (623 chars of prose to 4455), and long enough as shown. Article is BLP-compliant, neutral, has a 0.0% score on Earwig (lol), presentable, none of the sources strike me as unreliable. Hook is cited and verified in the sources given. Hook is clearly short enough, and is interesting. No images, QPQ done. Good to go! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Beta Beta Beta (talk • contribs) 01:18, 26 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

                    • Comment: Barring the AfD/RM discussions, there's multiple obvious issues here: the term "Verity" is ambiguous & could refer to Verity, which the article even references. The smiley face's neither "Verity" itself or necessary to understand what it is. The hook(s) just aren't interesting either. "Basic image becomes meme." "Meme is popular and compared to other meme." The only interesting hook I can think of here is some word play like "... that Anne Hathaway made reference to "Verity (web series)" while promoting "Verity (film)"?" Anne Hathaway is a good attention grabber. Other than that, I don't think there's anything here. Travis Mulch (talk) 00:36, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
                      • "Verity" is unambiguous here because of the picture. Also, I personally think 6-7 is much more click-attractive than Anne Hathaway. People will see "Verity" and "6-7" and lose their minds. The picture contributes to this. I am of course biased though because I'm Gen Z and don't watch many films. But I'm pretty sure ALT1 would blow up. –CopperyMarrow15 (talk · edits) 02:28, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
                        • @CopperyMarrow15: That's not how DYK works. "Verity" is indistinguishable from Harvey Ball's smiley aside from eye size/placement. People will see this image and think it's about one of the far more common uses of a yellow smiley. When's the last time you saw a non-yellow smiling emoji? Walmart's used the design everywhere for decades. Hooks are decided on factual accuracy and inherent interest in those facts, not whether or not people will "lose their minds", or if the hook will "blow up". The hooks aren't interesting/appropriate for Main page viewers that aren't very young, and not familiar with Minecraft, horror series, or internet memes. Verity is the meme of the week we'll forget by next month. Anne Hathaway is an award-winning, multi-billion-dollar grossing actress who's been subject to media coverage for two decades. • Comment: I've just closed an RM from Verity (meme) to Verity (web series), I am unsure of the effects of that on this DYK, perhaps a differently focused hook is desired. First, could you add citations for the sentences It sits on a cliff overlooking the Broad Creek portion of the Chesapeake Bay., Both the plantation, and its owner Covey, are described by Douglass in My Bondage and My Freedom., and It enabled him to get his farm tilled with much less expense to himself than he could have had it done without such a reputation". Also, could you provide a quote for me here from the book source verifying the ALT1 hook? Also, in the article, you state, During his servitude at Mount Misery, Douglass and Covey had a physical altercation. – was it a physical altercation or several? If the latter, it should be reflected in the article as it is in the hook. My preference is for ALT1 over ALT0 as I'm not sure if everyone is familiar with Donald Rumsfield. Overall: I think ALT0 needs tweaking, and ALT1 might benefit from it. For ALT0 the quote needs attribution but I think just "who the Pope said 'were happy'..." would do it. On ALT1, two thoughts: I think it'd be fine and punchier to cut it off at "33 years apart"; also, "witnessed" does get used figuratively in historical works (as in "X year witnessed Y things happening ..."); if the intriguing thing is that he was personally there for both of them despite not being a soldier, maybe a phrasing like "... was present for two crusader defeats at Damietta 33 years apart"?

Thanks, Obleronet. I do not mind attributing the quote to the pope, but I do not think that it improves the hook. I would say it is probably more appealing when it is shorter. Brevity is a virtue here. For ALT1, I'd say the intriguing thing is that his pontificate started with a crusader defeat at Damietta and ended with another. But since that is not evident, I would prefer to focus on the original hook. Surtsicna (talk) 15:21, 25 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
No argument that shorter is better. To my reading of WP:DYKHOOKCITE though, the quote at least has to be marked as a quote to satisfy "the wording of the article, hook, and source should all agree with each other with respect to who is providing the information". But we could leave out the Pope. What do you think of

@Sddarealone: Well, I suppose, but at the same time I'd not want to sensationalize a real person's story, even if that person is anonymous. Also, if I were to write that, I'd include that she told Gaten Matarazzo this, like ... that a fan told Gaten Matarazzo on a nighttime walk that she cancelled a romantic date over a secret episode of Stranger Things that ultimately never aired? I changed my mind, that feels way too clunky. I added the ALT 3, but I don't want to be too keen on pressing it. Also, who says it was romantic? People have dates for non-romantic reasons. Cited source just says "date". DS (talk) 19:40, 27 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Brynn Who Likes Editing: I've got a few notes here. First of all, I'd say the first hook is pretty good. It does make me question the order of events presented in the article, though: you write "The surge of Netflix users on January 7, checking if the theorized episode had premiered, were attributed to a technical outage from the streaming service that day" - wouldn't the outage be attributed to (caused by) a surge of users, not the other way around? I also added a maintenance template, namely to where it says "certain fans". Something regarding the opening paragraphs: "sparked debates around fandom mentality and the season more broadly" - I don't know if this is really reflected in the body? My last note is that it's kind of hard to interpret the last image in the article. There are no other notes I have here but please take note of the above, as it's not ready for promotion right now. -- Reconrabbit (talk) 20:27, 13 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I did a few changes based on your notes, thanks. These include me changing "debates" to "dialogue", and I believe this is now appropriate, since in the Impact section, we cover how fans thought it was "so bad" it could not be real, how they discussed elements they saw as weak, and also the parallels between TJLC and the articles from The Irish News and the University of Kent. Regarding the last image, it's meant to be an abstract representation of herd mentality and conformity, factors that Sophie Clarke from The Irish News believed played a part. • Article created 27 September 2026 and nominated 28 September 2026, so new enough and at 3378 B/541 words, long enough. The article is neutral and free of copyright concerns. The image is freely licensed. QPQ is valid. The hook is interesting and verified by the cited USA Today source, and the hook facts are present in the article. I suggest tightening the hook wording to be closer to the source: “its communist authorities” is ambiguous, and “almost three decades” better reflects the source’s 28-year timeframe. An ALT0c wording could be: ... that Ruth Ellen Gruber (pictured) was awarded the Order of Merit almost three decades after Poland's communist authorities expelled her? HerBauhaus · talk 14:46, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
                      • @HerBauhaus: Not sure about ALT0c; unlike with the other hooks, the connection isn't made between the Order of Merit, Poland, and its communist regime, which I felt was needed for DYKINT. And "communist authorities" is an unambiguously broad term, not ambiguous; in the meantime I've added an ALT0d in case that's not enough (as well as a few ALTs addressing the "almost three decades" part). ミラP@Miraclepine 17:10, 29 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

                      • Amazon.com is unsuitable as a source and needs to be replaced in all usages. It's possible the publisher's site could be cited instead, some review site that contains the info, or even the book itself as a primary source. The first two hooks are unsuitably WP:SURPRISE. ALT3 seems fine, but I'd add "to be dark, damaged, and troubled, unlike books such as Bridget Jones's Diary", or something along those lines, as what it means isn't obvious. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ (ᴛ) 17:17, 9 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi, Zxcvbnm. Thanks for the review! ALT0 and ALT1 are intended for WP:DYKAFD, which states that hooks may be presented in a manner that is possibly unbelievable to the reader. This can be done through words or names that mean two different things, shortened names, unbelievable facts, unrelated facts, etc. ... Proper capitalization, title formatting, and linking standards may be disregarded only if adhering to them will tend to give away the joke. I've never made an AFD nomination before, but I believe what I've proposed would be acceptable for that (though I will admit, my sense of humour is pretty bad, so maybe these hooks aren't very good.........). I'm not sure WP:SURPRISE applies here, since these are hooks, not articles. I've removed Amazon. Pamzeis (talk) 06:44, 12 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@RabidTuberculosis: I see the cited passages in the article, but they do not explicitly mention Britain or the Holocaust. Some hook promoters are quite picky about this, but I also think it might be confusing for some readers who do not have knowledge of the International Federation of University Women or (less likely) the Holocaust. Yue🌙 (talk) 20:59, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Yue: Thanks for reviewing! The book is about scientists killed during the Holocaust. I provided quotes most relevant to the hooks, although surrounding passages explicitly mention Nazi racial laws, her attempts to find a position at Oxford, correspondence with British organizations, and ultimate death to avoid deportation. The page numbers I cited are a good guide, please let me know if you have trouble finding anything in particular! RabidTuberculosis (talk) 21:22, 1 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@RabidTuberculosis: I think a strict interpretation of DYK rules would conclude that ALT2 would be fine if it said "World War II" instead of "the Holocaust", but common sense tells me that it doesn't matter because 1939 is, in fact, before the Holocaust. However, neither the source provided nor the article explicitly mentions the Holocaust (aside from the category), so technically ALT2 isn't verified in the article even if the conclusion is obvious to most readers. However, again I personally wouldn't care about that technicality. I will approve without question ALT0 and ALT1, and leave ALT2 to the judgement of the promoter. (See here for a shot taken farther out.) The photographer takes lots of pictures from events in Budapest. Probably the photographer got the wrong name on the photo while uploading, or perhaps cropped a different image. Based on the existence of a separate photo I have no doubt this is a valid "own work" claim, and it does not look like a video still to me. Dclemens1971 (talk) 01:57, 31 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

                        • This is amazing work, elegantly written, meticulously referenced, and educational not just about the fort but about the whole context of the Mughal Empire, its leaders, and its architecture. It was nominated in time, and easily meets the formal requirements as an article. QPQ done. The phrases picked up by Earwig are just location names. The image is freely licensed by its creator and is nicely framed.
I think DYK hooks need to be grammatically simple, not overloaded with clauses, so they can be grasped easily by a lay reader spotting them in a list of facts. I think the original hook and ALT1 are slightly too complex and much prefer ALT2. The mental image of an emperor imprisoned, gazing out at his most famous creation, is a striking one. However, the Brittanica citation given in the nomination and in the article seems not to completely support the statement, unless I'm missing something. The citation mentions Shah Jahan being imprisoned in the fort at the end of his life, but I don't see a mention of him "gazing out at the Taj Mahal from the Musamman Burj tower". I've checked the live and archived versions of the Britannica article. Could a better citation be found that more completely backs up this hook? MartinPoulter (talk) 11:16, 5 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

                        • @Pangalau: Thanks for the review. Those were the only two sources I located mentioning the fact (rather surprising given the significance of it). What would you think of dropping the "only" aspect? ALT1 ... that Jewish fencer Raoul Barouch was an Olympic flag bearer for an Arab country? I'm not sure of other good options... • @BeanieFan11: Thanks, ALT1 works for me. Removing "only" resolves my concern about the superlative sourcing requirement. @Miraclepine: Thanks, I've resolved these. Regarding the first of the failed verification tags, I have no idea how 1906 came in there. For the other tag (and the neutrality issue), the intended source was this. For OurSausalito, I highly doubt that the dog is actually the editor in chief, as they do have (who I presume are) humans listed there. For the others, I'm going to slightly disagree that these are problems (for example, the 3 B&B thing is debatable based on how you interpret the text), but nonetheless I've reworded accordingly. I don't doubt the wife was the co-owner, but Robert was the main proprietor. Epicgenius (talk) 19:59, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Epicgenius: The issues with ref 7 and ref 11 are left (still not sure the latter meets RS). ミラP@Miraclepine 20:06, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Miraclepine: 7 has been reworded, though like I said, the wording there is more up to interpretation. I was going to say that I didn't quite think that there's a problem with using 11 for uncontroversial statements. However, to expedite the review process, I replaced 11 with three sources. One of those is a press release, since unfortunately the locale we're talking about has relatively poor news coverage. Epicgenius (talk) 20:24, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Epicgenius: I'll approve the sources re ABOUTSELF, but I'm confused: the article says "11 rooms were renovated in the Barrett House, becoming the Alexandrite Suite" (which implies all of them became the suite), but this source says there was an Alexandrite Suite of two bedrooms separate from the other nine. ミラP@Miraclepine 20:36, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Miraclepine: The LTM website mentions that the "two-bedroom Alexandrite suite" covers 3,500 sq ft inside and 1,500 sq ft outside, which is consistent with what the article says. I would be very, very surprised indeed if two bedrooms cover 3,500 sq ft together, as that is more equivalent to the size of a NYC apartment. Presumably, many of the nine other rooms are part of the suite as well and are just not counted as bedrooms. Epicgenius (talk) 20:59, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
So, the suite's the entire building... Okay, then... I'll approve this, and thanks for the clarity. ミラP@Miraclepine 21:05, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

While there is a high score on Earwig for Copyvio, this can be attributed to the name of a source that has been properly cited. On the third entry in the Earwig list, there seemed to be a possible issue of CLOP, but the similar sections are so far apart, and are often place names. So, there are no real issues on that front. • QPQ has been done. Page is newly created. The proposed hooks are supported by the sources. I think ALT2 is most interesting for me. I actually want to propose a hook that the lions were moved to SAFTI after demands treat the sculptures with "due respect", but the lead is kind of missing information that in context, similarities were pointed out between the new lion head logo and the sculptures. I might revamp the lead a little to reflect that.--ZKang123 (talk · contribs) 01:42, 7 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Revised the lead to include the context. I tried coming up with a hook around that matter, but I think it might be too long. Let's see if you can give it a shot. Icepinner (Come to Hakurei Shrine!) 04:34, 12 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

                            • New enough, long enough, spot check revealed no close paraphrasing. However, the Acting credits section has too many blank fields and is hard to verify to the three cited sources; it might be better to trim it to only her most notable roles which have reliable sourcing. The hook also doesn't mention why her election is interesting or unexpected. Since she apparently originally wanted to become an academic and was compelled to enter acting due to her family's financial situation, it might make for a better hook. PetéWarrior (talk) 13:42, 4 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
                            • @Petewarrior: thank you for your review. I've trimmed some of the filmography to remove the blank spaces. As for the hook: what I thought made it interesting to a general reader was that a Muslim woman was elected as the president of a conference on Marathi arts, going against Islamophobic stereotypes prevalent in Maharashtra (as well as elsewhere) that Muslims are not good speakers of Marathi (which many right-wing politicians and activists have frequently portrayed as a "Hindu language" - compare Hindi-Urdu controversy for instance). I don't find the lecturer-to-actor shift an interesting hook myself since that is actually a pretty common course for actors in India. If ALT0 doesn't work for you, I can instead think of a hook about her number of performances:
ALT1: ...that Faiyaz Shaikh has acted in over 4,500 play performances in her career?
which can be sourced to this Loksatta article (ref 2 in the article). JavaHurricane 14:31, 4 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
If you could find references clarifying that a Muslim woman being elected is an unexpected development, then the first hook would be good. As it is, ALT1 is more suitable. PetéWarrior (talk) 14:44, 4 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Petewarrior: there's no sources explicitly saying that, so I think we should go ahead with ALT1. JavaHurricane 15:12, 4 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

                                  • Original hook: The source says the term is used less frequently than the club's main nickname, so I don't think this really works without the actual nickname being included. There's a potential hook here but I think the wording needs to be tweaked.
                                  • ALT1: what part of the source verifies that it is the only major Mexican football club without a rival derby?
                                  • ALT2: seems fine.
                                  • ALT3: seems fine, I like this one.
                                  • ALT4: seems fine but is less interesting than the other options IMO.
@BennyOnTheLoose: Thank you. What wording would you suggest for the original hook? I've added the word "sometimes" so that we don't suggest this is a major nickname.
Regarding the major Mexican club without a derby, I've expanded the quote for Futbol Total to include the first 2 paragraphs mentions the other major Mexican clubs -- America, Cruz Azul, Guadalajara (Chivas), and Pumas, part of the Big Four (Mexico). Even other clubs beyond these have derbies but not Toluca. If you still don't think this satisfies the hook then let me know or we can just choose another hook that does. Morogris (✉ • ✎) 14:27, 9 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Morogris. I think the amended original hook is OK (co-ordinators might want to tweak it slightly). I don't think the new sources quite support the "only" on ALT1, so unless you're really keen on it, maybe that one can be struck out. Regards, BennyOnTheLoose (talk) 19:34, 9 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Struck it, thank you for the suggestion BennyOnTheLoose. I've also tweaked the wording in the article so it no longer says "only". Feel free to review the other hooks and decide which one is good for the main page. Cheers, Morogris (✉ • ✎) 19:55, 9 October 2026 (UTC) Reply

                                      • This is a very well-written article that adds to Wikipedia's coverage of Middle Eastern cultures and ancient history. It is easily long enough and nominated in time. QPQ done. The article is in good Wikipedia style with careful inline citations to scholarly sources. Earwig confirms that it's original text. The only thing that stood out as odd was the phrase "a Muslim inscription"; normally I'd expect an inscription to be labelled by language or by time period (Arabic/ Muslim-era). However, seeing that the exact phrase is used in the scholarly source, I can't complain.
The image is present in the article, works at thumbnail size, and is freely licensed by its uploader. The hook is interesting and sourced (assuming good faith on a printed source). It does not appear as a whole in the article, but the different parts of it appear in the article cited to this source. There should be a connection between the text hook and the image. The "the" before "Kufic" isn't needed. So I propose this slightly altered hook, which is still well within 200 characters:
With these slight changes, I think this hook is good to go and am passing this DYK. MartinPoulter (talk) 14:14, 28 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Overall: Most of them looks fine to me. Some minor questions before passing:

                                      1. Would you mind to explain why you choose "Numu-tibo'o" while the ANB use "Numuraivo"? For comparsion, 'He is nowadays remembered by local settlers' descendants as Numu-tibo'o, meaning "[Northern Paiute] people-White man"' (WP) verses "Descendants today recall his name as “Numuraivo,” or Northern Paiute–White man." (ANB). Is the name from Hoyer's thesis?
                                      2. Book sources would benefit from adding ISBN and sections, particularly the Encyclopedia of Native American Religions.
                                      3. Per the previous tip, I am interested in Dancing Ghosts: Mary Austin's Synthesis of Native American and Biblical Mythologies - Is the source this book? Any differences between them? While I perfer a book with an ISBN over a thesis, I believe you have a reason on it.

Oh, by the way, if you are interested on creating hooks, I think you may want to add hooks about how he resisted white settlers. I am bad at creating interesting hooks so I won't add suggest them then. Saimmx (talk) 18:37, 26 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Saimmx: The name comes from the Hoyer ref, and I was checking if Numuraivo was a typo exclusive to the ANB, but several Google Books use "Numuraivo'o", so I added them (I'll use "Numu-tibo'o" first since, skimming at the Lynch ref, that's the more accurate Native American name and Numuraivo('o) appears to be outdated) and added an ALT1a accordingly. I have replaced the thesis with the book version and fixed the book refs; same for adding a ALT2. ミラP@Miraclepine 21:55, 26 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Pretty good. Looks like we have different spellings between sources. While I can't access offline sources over new added transliteration, I don't see issues from given ISBN info. Nice work, I think I can give a pass. If other reviewers see issues, let me know. --Saimmx (talk) 23:02, 26 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Overall: Nice article on a v interesting topic I did not know about; thank you! As well as the phrasing noted above, I have one v minor and one slightly bigger hesitation over the hook. Super minor: would 'newly-rediscovered' be more accurate than 'newly-discovered' given it was forgotten/under-studied, rather than totally lost? Slightly bigger: I'm aware that DYK is often leery of "first"-type hooks, and I'm not sure about the current phrasing. It reads at first glance like the "might be the first" is about uncertainty of date, but the date is definite, and the actual uncertainty is about whether it should be counted as a feature film or not. Do you reckon you could rearrange the hook to dodge that somehow? I'm not entirely happy with the below but for an idea of what I mean:

                                      Obleronet (talk) 17:29, 14 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the review @Obleronet. I think I've dealt with the Earwig concerns but if there are remaining issues do let me know.
I don't think we can say for sure that uncertainty revolves around whether it qualifies as a feature film or not. That was a view expressed on the article talk page here, but I haven't seen it reflected widely in sources. I have only found comment by one film historian (on the BBC podcast, mentioned in the article) who said uncertainty might be because of length or because it might feel more like a filmed play than a film (which isn't something likely to be settled until it is digitised, if ever). But that is just one historian's opinion, and I haven't seen any other reactions from other experts yet. My own interpretation of the hesitation by news outlets in straight-out calling it the first feature-length talkie is that this is a discovery by an amateur historian, with as yet no confirmatory (or otherwise) statements by what might be called an authoritative voice on film history.
As to hook wording, I'm going to ping @Cl3phact0: and @Masato.harada: for opinions on wording the hook, as they have both helped with the article. I will note whatever hook we settle on I'd prefer we didn't wikilink any other articles as they tend to distract from the new one. DrThneed (talk) 01:55, 15 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I've not seen it, but I expect it will be a filmed play, but that doesn't affect its date or its being a film. Re the hook: I like Obleronet's wording, except for the link to talkie. Could we say:
Or would that beg the question "What's The Jazz Singer? Masato.harada (talk) 07:51, 15 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Simple enough to find out if the question were to stump someone. On another note, the date seems more important than the running time. Two additional variants to consider:
                                      Graham and Maggie Moffat
                                      Graham and Maggie Moffat
                                      • ALT3 ... that a newly-rediscovered 1926 sound film by Graham Moffat (pictured) was first screened a year before Al Jolson's The Jazz Singer?
                                      • ALT4 ... that the newly-rediscovered sound film Till the Bells Ring (pictured) was first screened in 1926?
I'm also fairly certain that we can use this photo (in either instance). Cheers, Cl3phact0 (talk) 12:03, 15 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
So many options! I'm tending towards ALT3 with the new image (the image of Graham Moffatt no longer being in the article). Dropping the image into the front page template, do we think this image is good enough quality for the front page? DrThneed (talk) 23:58, 17 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Oh dear, I hadn't intended to preclude the possibility of using the first image of Moffat. If you prefer that one, it could easily be re-introduced somewhere (as he's both the playwright and one of the players). That said, I see no real issue publishing the 1923 photo on the main page—good enough for the Beeb, good enough for enwiki). I've seen plenty of old, not so crisp photos there over the years—although we might also be able to use a cleaner version of this one, or even a different shot of the larger cast, if either of those options are preferable. -- Cl3phact0 (talk) 05:09, 18 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hello - apologies for writing the review and vanishing, unexpectedly busy weekend. @Masato.harada:, @Cl3phact0:, thank you for the other hook variants and for the alternative photo. @DrThneed: the bit on the shady re-release looks fine now, thank you. It occurred to me belatedly that you could also frame a hook around its centenary rather than its status as a possible first, e.g.
(if there was space to get it out within October): ALT5a ... that a newly-rediscovered Scottish sound film was first publicly shown 100 years ago this month? Source: "And then on 11 October in Poole's Synod Hall in Edinburgh, where it was billed as "a super talking picture of Victorian Scottish life"." BBC article
(or if it was held until 28 Jan 2027): ALT5b... that a newly-rediscovered Scottish sound film had its first, private screening 101 years ago today? Source: "The film was made in 1926 and shown in a private showing of "Perfectly Synchronised Talking Motion Pictures" on 28-01-1926 at Holborn Empire." BFI record
Regardless of that I think there's plenty for a promoter to work with here. I approve ALT2, ALT3 and ALT4, with either picture; my personal preference would be 2>3>4. If another reviewer wants to weigh in re the centenary ideas please do. Obleronet (talk) 21:47, 19 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Obleronet: thanks for even more options! I'm not in favour of holding it back in general as the point of DYK is highlighting new content, so probably would go with one of the earlier variants of our hook. Anyway, I wanted to say that either of the suggested images could go with the hook depending on the promoter's preference, and I'd be happy to place the original image back in the article if that was wanted instead. DrThneed (talk) 21:54, 19 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
I am available to work on the photo/image/layout aspects (both here or in Commons—if additional photo uploads are needed there). Also agree that it would be preferable not to withhold this one. Cheers, Cl3phact0 (talk) 07:32, 20 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Overall: The article is new enough, sufficiently long, and generally well sourced and neutral. The main hook is interesting and supported by a strong source. The second would also be good though I wonder if "anti-censorship exhibition" is misrepresenting the purpose of the event a bit. — Fox 23:27, 18 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Fox: - thank you for the review! Now that you say it, ALT1 may be misrepresenting it a bit - while a lack of censorship was a focus of Museo Abierto, it was more about the "openness" of the museum after the dictatorship. So perhaps ALT1 could work best as something like "...that the transgressive artist duo Las Yeguas del Apocalipsis had their short film censored during a museum exhibition that claimed to lack censorship?" or something of the sort. But since the first one was accepted we can just go with that, I think! Thank you again, I'm excited to have my first DYK! smallest red boy (talk • contribs) 00:35, 19 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

                                          • A nice article on a good topic. New enough and long enough. No apparent copyvio, no QPQ required, no other policy issues. Appropriately sourced. Hook is somewhat interesting but it's even more interesting that the series was picked up after winning the contest, which is perhaps implied but not made clear in the hook. Riverskysun, I'd suggest ALT0a: ... that the webcomic Space Boy debuted on Webtoon after winning its first global talent search contest? Dclemens1971 (talk) 00:12, 10 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

BennyOnTheLoose: I don't think the "helped his military career" part is sourced, but the "first job" has to be. I could change the hook if you would like to something sourced? And I think saying that was his first job is just as interesting as who knows that? I know I didn't before I wrote this article, and I don't wanna make guesses, but I'm sure you didn't either.

Something like: "Did you know that George Washington worked as a professional land surveyor? It was also his first profession."
