The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has emerged as the highest-ranked Indian institution in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027, securing 254th place globally.
The 2027 edition covers 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories, making it the largest edition of the THE World University Rankings to date.
India has also recorded the highest representation from any Asian country for the second consecutive year. A total of 143 Indian universities have been included in the 2027 rankings, which is 15 more than the previous edition. Turkey stands next with 124 ranked institutions, also recording an increase of 15 universities.
IISc achieved an overall score of 57.0 in the 2027 rankings. Its strongest performance came in the research environment indicator, where it secured a score of 98.0.

Following IISc, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences is the next highest-ranked Indian institution. It has been placed in the 326–350 global rank band, with an overall score ranging between 52.3 and 53.3.

Shoolini University has been placed in the 451–500 band, while Jamia Millia Islamia and KIIT University are both positioned in the 501–550 range.
These institutions are among the 143 Indian universities featured in the latest THE rankings. Across Asia, THE has included 1,003 universities, up from 929 institutions in the previous edition.
The THE World University Rankings 2027 also highlight the growing representation of Asian institutions among the world's highly ranked universities.
Tsinghua University of China has moved up to 11th globally, making it the highest-ranked Asian university and placing it ahead of ETH Zurich. Peking University follows at 13th, while the National University of Singapore has entered the global top 15.
Asia now has 40 universities among the world's top 200, an increase of five compared with the previous year. Malaysia has also secured its first representation in the global top 200.
