The Back to the Future star and Parkinson’s advocate is promoted to the country’s highest civilian honor, while veteran kids producer Roger Damon Price is also named.

Michael J. Fox has been promoted to the highest Canadian civilian honor for his Hollywood success and Parkinson’s advocacy, it was announced Friday, June 26.

Canadian-born Fox in 2011 first received the Order of Canada for his acting and raising money and awareness for Parkinson’s disease. His promotion to the Companion of the Order of Canada was given as Fox “is in a remarkable chapter of his life, blending selective acting with powerful global advocacy and unflinching honesty about Parkinson’s. Through his foundation, he drives transformative research and hope,” Mary Simon, Canada’s governor general, said in a statement.

Emmy Award winner Fox grew up in Burnaby, Canada, before cementing his Hollywood career with star turns in Family Ties, Spin City and the Back to the Future movie franchise. He does occasional acting gigs from his home in New York City while continuing to raise money and awareness through his The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Also Friday, longtime kids TV producer Roger Damon Price was named as a Member of the Order of Canada. Damon Price is considered the father of Nickelodeon’s iconic green slime TV gag, and co-founded YTV, Canada’s cable kids TV network.

A castmember getting slimed first happened on You Can’t Do That on Television, a Canadian kids sketch comedy series Damon Price created and wrote for five seasons from 1979. The green goop eventually became a Nickelodeon signature when the Canadian series landed on the American kids channel in 1982 and helped define the U.S. cable TV brand, with slime becoming stapes on shows such as Double Dare and Figure It Out. Being slimed is now considered as being one of the highest honors that Nickelodeon can bestow on someone, with celebrities lining up to get slimed at the network's annual Kids' Choice Awards. Nickelodeon's slime even received its own music festival, bring slime, music and mayhem to fans around the world at SlimeFest.

New talent discovered on You Can’t Do That on Television included writer Bill Prady, an eventual co-creator of The Big Bang Theory, and a young Alanis Morissette, who appeared in five episodes.

Niv Fichman, a Canadian film producer of titles like The Red Violin and Blackberry, also made it onto the latest Order of Canada list as an Officer.

Burnaby, British Columbia and New York, New York, United States of America

Michael J. Fox is in a remarkable chapter of his life, blending selective acting with powerful global advocacy and unflinching honesty about Parkinson’s. Through his foundation, he drives transformative research and hope. He has inspired millions worldwide by channelling his voice into writing, public speaking, and the acclaimed 2023 documentary Still.

This is a promotion within the Order.

Roger Damon Price, C.M.
Ottawa, Ontario

Roger Price is a groundbreaking creator of youth television whose influential series reshaped children’s programming. His imaginative storytelling and irreverent humour empowered young audiences and advanced both science fiction and sketch comedy. His legacy endures through continued work with You Can’t Do That Productions in Ottawa and remains widely celebrated.

Lori Beth Denberg Wants You to Get LOUD for Libraries

The Loud Librarian is back - and she's got unbridled enthusiasm for the library!

Lori Beth Denberg as The Loud Librarian for Get Loud For Libraries

It's a troubling time in America right now, with books being banned and vital funding for libraries being decimated. What the world needs now is a superhero.. no wait, even better, a librarian, and Nickelodeon alum Lori Beth Denberg is here to answer the call!

In partnership with We Believe and EveryLibrary and in celebration of National Library Week, Denberg reprises her iconic All That character The Loud Librarian for a pro-library, anti-book banning PSA!

In the video, below, Denberg explains that everyone's fundamental right to read and learn is being endangered by funding cuts and book banning, and how the library is vital for providing internet access in rural communities, interspersed with her telling library visitors her classic catchphrase, "QUIET! THIS IS A LIBRARY!".

She’s back from the ’90s, and she’s getting loud about the threats to our public and school libraries! But for the first time ever, her voice might not be loud enough — we need your help! Your favorite Loud Librarian is back with some vital information on how to raise your voice during National Library Week and beyond, and join the chorus of parents, families, teachers, and students who support the freedom to learn. Below you’ll find actions you can take whether you have just a couple minutes today, some more time tomorrow, or are ready to work together in the effort to protect libraries.

Libraries are where visitors can study topics from all sorts of views, where students can find somewhere quiet to study, and where children fall in love with reading, but despite all that, books are still being banned.

Book banning may seem like a thing of the past, but in the 2023-2024 school year, PEN America counted more than 10,000 book bans in public schools, and has documented nearly 16,000 book bans in public schools nationwide since 2021, a number not seen since the Red Scare McCarthy era of the 1950s. And everywhere, it is the books that have long fought for a place on the shelf that are being targeted. Books by authors of color, by LGBTQIA+ authors, by women. Books about racism, sexuality, gender, history and more. PEN America pushes back against censorship and the intolerance and exclusion that undergird it.

In the video, Denberg explains how to viewers can fight for their libraries by getting LOUD, by going to school board meetings, town hall meetings, writing to their representatives, and by voting.

Nickelodeon Shutters NickRewind Retro Programming Block

It appears as if Nickelodeon is discontinuing NickRewind, the network's late-night retro programming block on TeenNick after over 10 years on air.

In mid-January, NickRewind removed most of its shows, opting to air the original iCarly series most evenings between 11 p.m. - 6 a.m., but keeping the NickRewind branding and BUGS/DOGS. However, starting last night (Jan. 31), TeenNick started to use its own branding and BUGS/DOGS during those hours.

TeenNick's evening programming block for Nickelodeon Classics begun life as The '90s Are All That in July 2011. The block then became known as The Splat in October 2015, followed by NickSplat in May 2017, and eventually NickRewind in March 2019.

The news comes as Nickelodeon's parent company, ViacomCBS, is switching its focus on streaming. A vast amount of Nickelodeon's back-catalog is available on Paramount+, the company's streaming platform, with more being added regularly.

Update (2/3) - The NickRewind Twitter page has confirmed that the NickRewind programming block has been discontinued. However, programming is still available on ViacomCBS' free streaming service Pluto TV and paid-for streaming service Paramount+:

For the moment, Nickelodeon is keeping its NickRewind social media pages on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube channel open for fans, although the latter has started to concentrate on Nickelodeon shows made post-2000, such as iCarly, Victorious and Sam & Cat.

THE ORANGE YEARS: THE NICKELODEON STORY SYNOPSIS:

"For millions of children and adults, the Nickelodeon Network is synonymous with growing up. In just a few years, the channel grew from a small local channel to an international phenomenon that helped shape a generation. Led by trailblazing visionary Geraldine Laybourne and her commitment to putting kids first, a group of unconventional heroes turned an underdog channel into an $8 billion dollar juggernaut as the golden standard for children’s programming. The Orange Years chronicles the rise of Nickelodeon, with the actors, writers, and creators from all the golden age Nickelodeon shows that shaped your lives. It’s wild. It’s crazy. It changed the world"

Using their combined skills in journalism and filmmaking as well as their mutual love for classic Nickelodeon, directors Adam Sweeney (part of the team behind The Prequels Strike Back: A Fan's Journey) and Scott Barber set out to make the documentary film Nickelodeon fans deserve. The childhood friends from The Woodlands grew up watching their beloved shows together and now share a new perspective on Nickelodeon.

The Orange Years journeys behind the scenes of the “kids first” phenomenal programming to chronicle the improbable and unprecedented success of Nickelodeon, straight from the mouths of those who brought the classic shows to fans as children. Filled with interviews from the actors, writers, animators, and creators from all your favorite golden age Nick shows, the film highlights the work of visionary Geraldine Laybourne, who was largely responsible for the network’s success in the early days.

The documentary has been been a labor of love for the filmmakers, who have interviewed some of the most famous and recognizable names from the channel's history, all the way back to its unlikely origins as Pinwheel in Columbus, Ohio.

The film has an all-star Nickelodeon cast including Kenan Thompson (All That, Kenan & Kel, Good Burger, Saturday Night Live), Kel Mitchell (All That, Kenan & Kel, Good Burger, Game Shakers), Alisa Reyes (All That), Marc Summers (Double Dare), Larisa Oleynik (The Secret World of Alex Mack), Phil Moore (Nick Arcade), Kirk Fogg (Legends of the Hidden Temple), Venus DeMilo (Salute Your Shorts), Michael Bower (Salute Your Shorts), and Danny Cooksey (Salute Your Shorts), Fred Keller (Hey Dude) and Christine McGlade (You Can’t Do That on Television).

Not that The Orange Years concentrates only on Nick's live-action output. The filmmakers also talked to talents from the groundbreaking animated division, like writer Mitchell Kriegman (Rugrats, Clarissa Explains it All), and the king of cartoon voice work, Tom Kenny (Rocko's Modern Life and SpongeBob SquarePants).

More than just a history lesson or a “where are they now?” special, the documentary explores the network’s revolutionary approach to storytelling, the impact it had on a generation of youth, and aims to find out of why these shows have stayed in the hearts of so many people.

Adam F. Goldberg (The Goldbergs) serves as an executive producer on the documentary.

Gravitas Ventures recently released Happy Happy Joy Joy: The Ren & Stimpy Story, a documentary chronicling the rise of The Ren & Stimpy Show in North America.

The Orange Years: The Nickelodeon Story made its world debut during a panel at the ninth annual DOC NYC festival in November 2018, which was attended by directors Scott Barber and Adam Sweeney; and '90s Nickelodeon stars Danny Tambarelli and Michael C. Maronna from The Adventures of Pete & Pete. Lee Leshen will served as the panels moderator.

THE ORANGE YEARS: THE NICKELODEON STORY

You Can’t Do That on Television, Clarissa Explains It All, Double Dare, The Adventures of Pete & Pete, Doug, Rugrats… If you recognize any of these titles, you probably grew up watching Nickelodeon, the cable-television network devoted to kids that launched almost 40 years ago. Beginning as a small local channel, visionary leadership led to its rapid growth into a global phenomenon. The Orange Years is a nostalgic and entertaining look back at the early years of the youth-oriented network that broke all the rules to let kids enjoy being kids.
