Paramount Executives Tell Staff That Africa Offices and Channels May Close Amid International Strategy Review

Paramount's Africa leads Monde Twala and Craig Paterson told the teams in Johannesburg and Lagos that their roles could be impacted as the firm "evaluates its pay TV strategy and local channel footprint."

Paramount Global‘s Africa offices may close, local channels may be shuttered, and staffers’ roles could be impacted, company executives told employees in the region on Tuesday, July 22, sources familiar with the situation have told The Hollywood Reporter.

The company has been prioritizing investments in its growing streaming business and core global content as it navigates shifts in audience behavior and the macro-economic environment. As part of that, it is reviewing its international pay TV strategy and considering adjustments to its linear channel portfolio in international markets, with a focus on cable brands. Management has also signaled a focus on businesses and regions with the most opportunity for revenue growth.

As part of the restructuring, several Paramount channels are already known to be closing internationally by the end of the year, including: Nickelodeon channels TeenNick and NickMusic, along with MTV channels MTV 80s, MTV 90s, MTV 00s, MTV Hits, MTV Live, Club MTV, we well as Polsat Comedy Central Extra in Poland; and Teen Nick, Nick Music, Comedy Central, Paramount Network, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, MTV 00s, MTV Hits, MTV Live HD, and Club MTV in Hungary. Nickelodeon wise, this will leave Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. and Nicktoons in these regions. However, in New Zealand, Nickelodeon and Nick Jr., along with MTV 80s, MTV Hits, and Comedy Central, are expected to shutter by the end of the year, as Paramount's programming partnership with Sky TV is set to expire.

In Africa, Nickelodeon channels available include Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., and Nicktoons, the latter of which carries a localised NickMusic programme.

Tuesday’s news comes as Paramount continues to wait for FCC approval of Skydance Media’s deal to acquire it, which has included a $16 million lawsuit settlement with President Trump. THR understands that Paramount has fewer than 100 employees in Africa between its offices in Johannesburg, South Africa and Lagos, Nigeria.

“We are at a point in our journey where we are facing immense industry disruption,” Monde Twala and Craig Paterson, co-general managers of Paramount Africa, said in a staff memo obtained by THR. “Our team is not immune to potential changes as our organization evaluates its pay TV strategy and local channel footprint here in Africa.”

In June, Paramount unveiled further U.S. workforce cuts to the tune of 3.5 percent, following a 15 percent reduction last year. As of the end of 2024, Paramount Global had 18,600 employees worldwide. Co-CEOs George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy and Brian Robbins said in a June memo that the focus was on U.S. headcount but the moves “may also result in some impacts to our workforce outside the U.S. over time.”

Twala and Paterson acknowledged in their staff memo: “Today was incredibly difficult. We want you to know your greatness is seen. We reach out with a heavy heart, but also with immense pride. Your dedication to excellence, creativity and passion for leveraging the power of our content have been the driving force behind our many accomplishments.”

They concluded: “We understand the coming weeks may be tough and feel unsettling. Through it all, please know your efforts are valued beyond measure.”

20 August 2025

From 25 August 2025, DStv Family subscribers can look forward to even more fun-filled afternoons as Nickelodeon, Nick Jr, and DreamWorks join the package permanently.

This update is part of DStv’s plan to position Family as South Africa’s home of kids’ entertainment – offering more for households at no extra cost. DStv Family will now include all 14 DStv kids’ channel on live TV, plus even more to download or stream on DStv Stream. Parents can count on trusted, quality programming, while kids enjoy endless adventures and stories to spark their imagination.

“While our broader packaging review remains ongoing, our research shows that Family customers value kids’ content as much as they do local shows and movies,” says Byron du Plessis, CEO at MultiChoice South Africa. “By adding Nickelodeon, Nick Jr, and DreamWorks to the Family package alongside favourites like Cartoonito and Disney Channel, we are making DStv Family the undisputed Home of Kids Entertainment. It is now easier than ever for households to enjoy safe, entertaining, and educational shows that keep children engaged.”

Nickelodeon, Nick Jr and the DreamWorks aren’t just names, they are known in millions of households across South Africa and the globe. Nickelodeon has broadcast across sub‑Saharan Africa since 2008 and remains a mainstay of kids’ programming. Nick Jr launched in 2014 as a dedicated preschool channel in South Africa, complementing Nickelodeon by catering specifically to younger children with carefully curated shows.

Meanwhile, the DreamWorks Channel, known internationally for its high-quality, award-winning animated storytelling like Shrek and Kung Fu Panda, was added to DStv in March 2022.

All DStv customers with a decoder can enjoy DStv Stream at no extra cost. Kids can dive into their favourite shows on a phone, laptop or smart TV while the rest of the family watches on the big screen, giving everyone more ways to watch what they love at the same time. Download and watch capability also allows parents to save on data costs through downloading kids content in areas with free Wi-Fi, including all DStv walk-in centres.

Nickelodeon Africa Announces Launch of 'PAW Patrol' In isiZulu

PAW PATROL PREMIERES IN ISIZULU ON NICKELODEON THIS MONTH

Nickelodeon, the leading kids’ entertainment brand, is thrilled to announce the isiZulu premiere of one of the world’s most beloved animated preschool series, PAW Patrol, airing on 18 March at 15:00 on NickToons Africa (DStv channel 308).

This announcement marks the beginning of a PAWsome adventure, leading up to the PAW Patrol Live shows in June across Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

March is set to be an exciting month for Nickelodeon, embracing the theme of adventure and camaraderie with the debut of PAW Patrol in isiZulu. Following the immense success of the SpongeBob SquarePants: isiZulu series last year, which garnered 2,602,520 unique viewers and attracted 909,000 new viewers who were not previously tuned in to NickToons, Nickelodeon is enthusiastic about extending this linguistic inclusivity to more of their cherished content.

Dillon Khan, VP of Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, Studios & Creative Services (Africa), emphasized the importance of language representation in children’s media, stating, “TV shows shape our view of the world. The things we see and hear on TV don’t just start and stop there; they influence us, shape our perceptions of ourselves and others in the world around us. That’s why we feel projects like this are so important. They allow our kids to feel seen and heard and they offer a wonderful, fun and engaging learning opportunity for those who do not yet speak isiZulu. We have more exciting announcements on local languages coming, so watch this space”

Nickelodeon’s commitment to inclusivity has solidified its position as the most-watched kids’ channel across the region. The success of the isiZulu SpongeBob SquarePants series demonstrates the audience’s enthusiasm for culturally diverse content, encouraging Nickelodeon to extend this initiative to more of its beloved shows.

The decision to dub PAW Patrol into isiZulu aligns with research findings, such as the investigation study by Marian and Shook (2012), which suggests that bilingual advantages in improving a set of mental skills known as executive functions which contribute to cognitive and sensory processing improvements. Learning a new language positively influences brain development, particularly in memory, speech, sensory processing, and contributes to a child’s self-esteem.

PAW Patrol is on a roll this March, leading the way in linguistic inclusivity and cultural representation. Parents of PAW Patrol fans can head to Nickelodeon Africa’s Instagram page, @Nickelodeon_Africa, to enter their kids for a chance to win PAW Live tickets. Join us on 18 March at 15:00 on NickToons (DStv channel 308) for the isiZulu premiere of PAW Patrol, and let the adventure begin!
