The National Testing Agency (NTA) has invited applications from Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) for empanelment to support various activities related to the preparation and improvement of questions for national-level examinations.
Eligible candidates can submit their Expression of Interest (EOI) through the official NTA website at nta.ac.in. The last date to submit the EOI form is October 9, 2026.
The empanelment process is open to eligible professionals, including serving and retired faculty members, professors, school teachers and other subject experts.
The selected SMEs will contribute to multiple stages of the examination question-development process. Their responsibilities may include:
Preparing questions and developing test items
Reviewing and validating questions
Moderating question papers
Translating and transadapting questions
Experts will be expected to develop syllabus-based and application-focused questions while ensuring that the content is academically appropriate. They will also examine questions for accuracy, clarity, relevance and suitable difficulty levels.
Their involvement will help NTA maintain the required academic and examination standards before questions are included in national-level tests.
The SME empanelment process also covers activities related to the translation of examination questions.
Experts involved in translation review will be required to assess translated questions for:
Linguistic accuracy
Technical correctness
Cultural appropriateness
The objective is to maintain quality, consistency and accuracy in question papers offered in different Indian languages.
NTA conducts several major examinations, including NEET UG, JEE Main, CUET and UGC-NET, making accurate multilingual question development an important part of the examination process.
Eligible candidates interested in joining the SME panel can follow these steps:
Visit the official NTA website at nta.ac.in.
Locate the notification related to Subject Matter Experts (SMEs).
Read the eligibility requirements and other instructions carefully.
Complete the Expression of Interest (EOI) form.
Submit the form within the prescribed deadline.
The last date to apply for NTA SME empanelment is October 9, 2026.
The empanelment of subject experts is part of NTA's broader efforts to strengthen the question-development and examination process.
The Central Government has also constituted a High-Powered Task Force to suggest measures for improving public examinations. The areas being considered include:
Examination security
Technology adoption
Infrastructure development
Examination accessibility
Inclusion in examinations
These initiatives are aimed at strengthening different aspects of the public examination system.
NTA Director General Abhishek Singh has recently highlighted the possibility of expanding India's examination capabilities beyond the country.
Along with strengthening the domestic examination framework, NTA may explore opportunities to conduct examinations in other countries in the future, including BRICS nations.
The agency is also examining international examination models and practices that could contribute to improvements in question-paper development, examination technology and test administration.
NTA's invitation for Subject Matter Experts is intended to bring qualified educators and professionals into different stages of question preparation, review, moderation and translation for national-level examinations.
Eligible teachers, faculty members, researchers and other subject experts can submit their applications for empanelment through the NTA website by October 9, 2026.
