The Maharashtra State Bureau of Textbook Production and Curriculum Research, popularly known as Balbharati, has introduced revised textbooks for the 2026–27 academic year. The move is part of the state's ongoing implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and aims to make learning more engaging, competency-based, and student-centered.
For the academic session beginning in June 2026, new textbooks have been introduced for Classes 2, 3, 4, and 6. These books are based on revised curriculum frameworks developed under NEP 2020 and focus on conceptual understanding rather than rote memorization.
Key highlights include:
The revision is part of Maharashtra's long-term educational reform strategy. The new curriculum aims to prepare students for future learning challenges by encouraging understanding and application of concepts instead of simple memorization. Education experts, curriculum specialists, and reviewers examined the content before publication.

Balbharati has also continued its policy of providing compulsory Marathi language textbooks for students studying in different mediums. English-medium students will receive Marathi learning materials designed specifically for their linguistic background, while students from other language mediums will continue to receive appropriate Marathi textbooks.
The academic year 2026–27 will be the final year for the existing textbooks used in Classes 5, 7, 9, and 11. Schools have been advised to purchase these books only according to actual requirements because revised editions are expected in future academic sessions under the new curriculum framework.
The circular also states that students of Standards 9 to 12 must use practical record books prepared by Balbharati. In accordance with earlier Government Resolutions and corrigenda, these notebooks are mandatory as they are aligned with the prescribed syllabus and evaluation system.
The circular was officially issued by Anuradha Oak, Director of the Textbook Bureau, Pune, on 7 May 2026 from the Balbharati office in Pune. It provides important information regarding textbooks and academic preparations for the 2026–27 school year.
The notice is intended to guide schools, booksellers, students, and parents across Maharashtra as they prepare for the new academic session.
The introduction of revised textbooks for Classes 2, 3, 4, and 6 marks one of Maharashtra's most significant curriculum reforms in recent years. By aligning textbooks with the National Education Policy 2020, the Maharashtra Education Board aims to create a more engaging, skill-oriented, and student-friendly learning environment. As schools begin the 2026–27 academic session, students and teachers can expect a modernized curriculum designed to promote deeper understanding, creativity, and lifelong learning.
