Jo Teichmann reposted thisJo Teichmann reposted thisAnthropic is moving aggressively into biotech. In just a few months, the company bought Coefficient Bio, hired Nobel laureate John Jumper, started building its own drug pipeline, worked on standards that let AI interact with lab equipment, and is now hiring for biotech M&A and investments. So, it’s building across more and more parts of biotech: - Scientific talent: John Jumper and other domain experts - Capabilities/data: Coefficient Bio and further M&A on the table - Physical execution: the Model Hardware Standard, which could make lab equipment easier for AI agents to interact with (Danaher, QIAGEN, Tecan and Universal Robots are building support into their products) - Applications: protein design, reg writing, lab automation, healthcare data - Asset ownership: an internal preclinical pipeline, scoped to neglected diseases - Capital allocation: a corporate dev mandate covering minority investments, acquisitions, and partnerships (not yet any transactions under it, though) For investors, AI-native biotechs may have a new buyer. Alongside pharma/other biotechs as strategic exits, the big labs could now become acquirers too. Let’s see whether Anthropic is primarily going to be a buyer for platform and data companies or also asset-centric ones; the latter would be a much bigger step. Also, it plans to get involved much earlier, e.g., its life sciences partnerships program talks about company creation, structuring co-creation deals, and working with investors on new ways to build/fund biotechs. Further, all these recent moves now really start to create channel conflict. Anthropic pushes quite hard to get pharma companies to use Claude across R&D, but at the same time, it’s building its own pipeline and looking at biotech acquisitions and investments (and the neglected-disease scoping doesn't fully address that). Thus, Anthropic seems to have a much broader interpretation of its role than simply being a tech supplier for pharma. I’m sure the company will get bullish on space soon too. If the goal is to generate more biological data, microgravity gives them the perfect additional experimental environment.

Jo Teichmann shared thisThe Stanford University entrepreneurial ecosystem is the third largest economy in the world. It goes: 1. 🇺🇸 USA: $32 trillion GDP 2. 🇨🇳 China: $21 trillion GDP 3. 🌲 Companies started out of Stanford: $6 trillion in global revenue And within that ecosystem is StartX, Stanford’s selective founder accelerator and community. A few numbers that speak for themselves: • 3,000+ founders / 85+ tenured Stanford professors • 29+ companies valued at $1B+ • $200B+ in total valuation • $44M raised on average • 144 companies valued at $100M+ Today, I’m incredibly excited to share that I’m joining StartX as part of the Fall 2026 cohort. Grateful for the opportunity to learn alongside some exceptional founders, operators, and builders. Let’s build something legendary. 🚀

Jo Teichmann posted this18 minutes. 203 symptoms. That is the math your doctor is solving. A 2021 international study of 3,762 long COVID patients identified 203 distinct symptoms spanning 10 organ systems. The average patient had 56 of them. Across 9 organ systems. (Davis et al., EClinicalMedicine, 2021) Now look at how long they have to explain that. A 2023 JAMA Health Forum analysis of 8 million primary care visits found the average visit lasts about 18 minutes. (Neprash et al., 2023) 18 minutes to take a history, examine the patient, review the chart, order labs, write the note, and make a plan. For a disease that touches nearly every organ system in the body. It is not a doctor problem. It is a system problem. We built primary care for acute illness. We are using it to triage chronic complexity. And then we blame patients for not being heard. The fix is not longer visits. The fix is better tools that compress the diagnostic work that used to take years into something a clinician can act on now. That is the future we should be building toward. What would you want your doctor to see in those 18 minutes?

Jo Teichmann posted thisThe blood test that does not exist yet The science is there. The product is not. In 2023, a Yale-led team published in Nature what may be the cleanest evidence to date that long COVID has measurable biology. (Klein et al., Nature, 2023) They profiled 275 people. With and without long COVID. What they found: Altered monocyte populations. Exhausted T cells. Reactivated Epstein-Barr virus signals. Distinct hormone patterns. Machine learning could tell the two groups apart. Let that land. This is not "in your head." This is not "unexplained." This is a measurable immune signature hiding in plain sight. So why is there still no diagnostic test in your doctor's office? Because publishing a signature and productizing one are different problems. One wins grants. The other wins patients. The gap between those two is where the next generation of diagnostics companies will be built. Which side of that gap are you on?

Jo Teichmann posted thisUp to $430 billion. Vanishing every year. And most investors still call this a niche. A 2024 evidence review from the US Department of Labor synthesized the research on long COVID and work. The range of lost US income? $101 to $430 billion. Per year. (CLEAR Rapid Review, US DOL, 2024) Long COVID has pulled an estimated 700,000 people out of the US labor force. It has cut hours for millions more. One in four long COVID patients reports their work has been impacted -- either stopped entirely or reduced. Let that sit. We are not talking about a productivity blip. We are talking about a structural drag on the US economy that compounds every year the diagnostic gap stays open. And this sits inside the larger picture -- the global economic burden of long COVID is estimated at $1 trillion per year. Lost wages are just one slice of that. The market signal is everywhere. The capital is somewhere else. What would it take for investors to take post-infectious disease seriously?

He explains: "Being part of a community increases your probability of success enormously, especially around biotech." Biotech doesn't move like typical startups, the cycle from investment to revenue is severely extended, and knowing how to navigate that, and when to raise, is critical. Jo Teichmann liked thisJo Teichmann liked thisMy first PhD paper just came out. And it is a very personal one. In the middle of my PhD, I was working with a friend and colleague on wearables, longevity, and early disease detection. We had so much fun working together. One day he didn’t show up at the lab. A week went by. Then I got the news: he had died of sudden cardiac death. About 1,000 people experience cardiac arrest every day in the US alone. Until it happened to someone close to me, I don’t think I understood what that number meant. I still remember the phone call with his family. Together, we decided to try to understand what had happened. Were there signs we had missed? We were both wearables enthusiasts. He wore an ŌURA ring and an Apple Watch. With his family’s help, we brought together his wearable data, exercise records, and medical history. What we found was hard to look at. Around five months before his death, several measures changed abruptly, around the same time. His resting heart rate went up, his heart rate variability dropped, and his sleep and walking measures declined. Those changes didn’t go away. This started as a personal project. We weren’t planning to publish anything. But as we worked through the findings, we felt they were worth sharing. We’re not claiming that wearables can predict sudden cardiac death (yet!). Looking back at one person’s data cannot tell us that. What this case does suggest is that changes in wearable data could help doctors recognize when someone needs further evaluation. There is so much health information in wearable devices that we still don’t use. I want to help make it useful to the people wearing them and the doctors caring for them. Losing my friend made that work feel much more urgent. Yesterday was World Heart Day, and Stanford Medicine published the story behind our paper. You don’t need a science background to read the story, and the paper: https://lnkd.in/gAZcRT7e Thank you to his family for trusting us with his data and helping us understand his story. Jo Teichmann liked thisJo Teichmann liked thisToday, Dr. Eike Gerhardt, Lawrence Callahan, and I are excited to announce our $11M seed round for Autopoiesis Sciences. Over the last year, we launched Aristotle, an AI research partner now used by thousands of researchers across institutions including Pfizer, the FDA, Harvard, GSK, Merck, MIT, AstraZeneca, Stanford, Johnson & Johnson, the NIH, Bristol-Myers Squibb, the European Medicines Agency, Oxford, Yale, and Johns Hopkins. We also pioneered Metacognitive Steering, a new inference-time control technique that reads a model's internal cognitive state and adjusts its layer-specific activations to guide how it reasons over a long investigation, helping it decide when to explore, challenge its assumptions, verify, or change direction, without modifying its underlying parameters. That work led to Columbus-1, our first autonomous research system for long-horizon scientific reasoning. Columbus-1 has already produced novel results across a growing set of scientific and engineering domains. We’ve raised $11M in seed funding led by Threshold Ventures, with participation from Informed Ventures, Alpaca VC, VitalStage Ventures, Correlation Ventures, Darkmode Ventures, Mike Mahlkow, Cross Atlantic Angels, Max Keller, JD Montgomery, Adam Grosser, and others, to continue to build AI capable of autonomous scientific discovery. We have demonstrated tremendous capabilities despite significant constraints, and will continue to do so. I have surrendered my autonomy to become an instrument of this mission, so that your children can inherit a world free of disease and scarcity, and know they owe it to what we are building.
