We’re excited to announce Sequen’s $90 million Series B today, alongside Recursive Ranking Intelligence (RRI), our newest technology breakthrough.  Every search result, every ad, everything you buy, every piece of content you read, every price you're quoted, all of it runs on a ranking system. None of it is neutral and none of it is accidental. Somewhere there is a model deciding the order, and the order is the entire game. It isn't only what you see next. It's what you see first. It's what you see last. It's what you never see. Every dollar of online consumer spend passes through a ranking model on its way out of someone's wallet, and most of the companies whose revenue depends on that model don't own it. So we built an AI researcher that works non-stop generating ranking models proven to make money, measured as statistically significant lift in live A/B tests on the customer's own instrumentation, and the customer owns every model it creates. We're announcing it today as Recursive Ranking Intelligence, alongside the round which was led by Jay Park from Prysm Capital https://lnkd.in/gqn5Ay6t

I’m excited to announce Sequen’s $90 million Series B today, alongside Recursive Ranking Intelligence, our newest technology breakthrough. I want to explain why anyone would put that kind of money into a company that only does ranking, and the explanation starts with an equation. As a kid, I was obsessed with Euler's identity, e^(iπ) + 1 = 0. The number behind compound growth, the number behind circles, the square root of negative one: all from unrelated corners of mathematics, and they are all together in a single line. What I loved was that nobody designed it. It was true the whole time, underneath everything, waiting for someone to look from the right angle. I assumed I'd spend my life as a mathematician chasing hidden truths like that. Then I understood I was never going to be a great mathematician. Like many failed mathematicians, I ended up in the CS department, and that's where I found the thing I'm actually good at: information retrieval, getting a person to what they're looking for. Except the part that gripped me wasn't helping people find things. It was that the instant someone searches, you can influence what they think they are looking for. This was 2010, 2011, before "the algorithm" was a phrase anyone said out loud. Ranking decides which questions get asked at all: what appears first, what appears next, what you never see. Once you've internalized this, you see it everywhere. Every search result, every ad, everything you buy, every piece of content you read, every price you're quoted, all of it runs on a ranking system. None of it is accidental. Somewhere there is a ranking model deciding the order, and the order is the entire game. It isn't only what you see next. It's what you see first, what you see last, what you never see. That's the identity I'd been looking for since I was a kid. A hotel search, a pair of pants, a news feed, and an ad auction look like four industries with nothing in common, but underneath they are one function with different inputs, the way growth and circles and an impossible number are one equation. Ranking is Euler's identity for the internet: the short line under everything, that almost nobody looks at directly, and that turns out to be where the money moves. Every dollar of online consumer spend passes through a ranking model on its way out of someone's wallet, and most of the companies whose revenue depends on that model don't own it. Social platforms do, because they have the dense, constant-use data that makes ranking tractable. Retailers, travel companies, and marketplaces mostly don't, and for them it has been an incredibly hard problem to solve. So we built an AI researcher that works non-stop generating ranking models proven to make money, measured as statistically significant lift in live A/B tests on the customer's own instrumentation, and the customer owns every model it creates. https://lnkd.in/gTrarsU3

Huge congratulations to our portfolio company Sequen on their $90M Series B, less than 6 months since we co-led their Series A! From the moment I first met Zoë Weil I knew I had to partner with her and the Sequen team. Since then, the team has made incredible progress. Sequen now works with some the largest consumer facing companies in the world to drive revenue in real time while delivering world-class ranking models owned by the customer themselves. The company also recently launched Recursive Ranking Intelligence (RRI) an autonomous AI researcher that designs, tests, and iterates on AI models around the clock. Excited to continue the journey alongside Zoe and team, and to welcome Jay Park and Kerry Wei from Prysm Capital to our board. LFG! 🚀 https://lnkd.in/gRvnikUWto

Fun dinner in SF with Lisa Xu and the Threshold Ventures crew 📈 Have gotten to know the Threshold crew for a while now starting with Heidi Roizen and Emily Melton and are grateful to be partnered up with Lisa Xu as we build Laborup 🚀 They are truly A+, the best of the best, are amazing people (which can be rare for a VC 😅) and play long term games across the board. Look at their amazing track record 📈 It’s a no brainer to scout for them and if you’re founder starting out, reach out or you know who to call!

There's a new category in enterprise software: AI ROI. AI is changing the economics of software in real time. Every company is moving fast. Few can answer the questions that matter: - What are we spending? - What are we getting back? - Where should we invest more? That is why we built CloudZero into the AI ROI company. - Allocate every AI dollar. - Attribute every outcome. - Optimize what matters. Across every provider, every model, every team — in real time. Welcome to the AI ROI era. Welcome to the new CloudZero. Learn more here: cloudzero.com #AIROI #AICostIntelligence #AIAllocation #AISpend

Big move from CloudZero today - evolving from cloud cost management to the AI ROI Company. AI spend doesn't behave like traditional software spend. It's probabilistic, non-deterministic, and spread across COGS, R&D, and G&A simultaneously. Only 14% of CFOs can actually prove what AI is returning. That's the problem. What CloudZero is doing is less "dashboard for AI bills" and more financial control plane - connecting spend to the outcome it produced, at the level where decisions actually get made (model routing, pricing, agent optimization, budget allocation). The infrastructure advantage matters here. 14 trillion billing events processed annually isn't a feature; it's the moat. That allocation engine was built for cloud economics; AI is a new dimension on top. The companies that figure out their AI unit economics in the next 18 months will compound. The ones that don't will spend years defending opaque spend to their boards. Excited for the launch from the team Justin Moore Bill Buckley Matt Katz Erik Peterson Scott Castle Matt Manger [Link in comments]

AI has collapsed the cost of writing code. It did nothing to the cost of knowing whether that code is right. After 65 days, 7 repos, and 600+ commits building my own VC stack, I realized: The bottleneck isn’t implementation anymore. It’s judgment. Here is what I learned from 2 months deep in the code - and why "silent failures" are the new production tax.

There's been a lot written of late about Stanford and entrepreneurship — some of it complimentary, some not so much. So after more than a decade lecturing there myself, I want to add my experience to the mix. For the last twelve years, I've co-taught the Threshold Venture Fellowship in the Stanford Technology Ventures Program (STVP) department, first with Tina Seelig and then with Aidan Madigan-Curtis. The fellowship comprises twelve Stanford graduate students per year. They come from the engineering school, medical school, law school, business school, the humanities, the d.school, and more. They come from all over the world, bringing with them a broad diversity of talent, knowledge, and lived experience. The program is highly competitive — we typically receive about ten applicants for every spot. We try to admit not only people of high potential, but also those who have demonstrated through their past activities that they care about their communities and about humanity more broadly. We do this because we don't simply want to develop leaders — we want to develop leaders with empathy, compassion, and a sense of responsibility to leave whatever part of the world they touch better than they found it. And I'll be honest: once in a while, we get it wrong. Out of 144 Fellows, we've had a few who have not upheld what I consider to be the core ideals. You can't get it right every time. But by and large, our Fellows come into the program with open minds and open hearts. They support one another. They work through their differences. They approach the program with energy and curiosity — and also with vulnerability. As much as I love teaching each cohort, the real emotional return for me happens after they graduate. Almost all of them continue to participate in alumni events, retreats, and a very lively WhatsApp channel. They've found roommates, jobs, co-founders, and best friends in one another. I've also watched them show up for each other in times of crisis. They've gone on to create companies in health care, robotics, space exploration, food supply, and more. They've taken jobs in dozens of different industries. They've worked for non-profits. They've shown up for their communities in myriad ways. And many have started to pass on the values of TVF by mentoring their own next generation. I'm grateful to the Stanford Technology Ventures Program (STVP), to Tom Byers and Tina Seelig, to Emily Melton and Josh Stein, to Aidan Madigan-Curtis, Tess Hatch, the TA's, executive mentors, and to each and every Fellow who has brought their whole self to the program and continued to live its values after graduation. I appreciate the curiosity, kindness, and generosity you show to me and to each other. You give me tremendous hope for the future. And to the Stanford detractors: yes, not everything is perfect on the Farm. But I wish you could spend just one weekend with this group of people. I think you'd leave more hopeful, too.
