Follow-up to #8804 and #8811. Builtin #[pymember]s now use the same offset-addressed PyMemberDef path as __slots__ and C-API members.

  • #[pymember] declares a payload field (const field: () = (); in the #[pyclass] impl, with type, readonly, name, field, offset options). The offset is payload_offset::<Self>() + offset_of!(Self, field). The macro checks the field type against the member type.
  • MemberAccess::Func (getter/setter functions) is removed. MemberKind::Double is added.
  • Converted members: property fget/fset/fdel/__doc__, function __globals__/__closure__/__builtins__/__doc__/__module__, staticmethod/classmethod __func__/__wrapped__, complex real/imag, frame f_trace_lines, defaultdict default_factory, getset/member descriptor __name__/__objclass__, module __dict__. frame.f_trace_opcodes is a getset.
  • Writable member fields are atomic pointer cells. The instance dict pointer is an atomic cell at a fixed offset in front of the object. Dict presence follows the type's HAS_DICT flag.
  • The pickle basicsize check in object_getstate_default no longer counts dict, weakref, and slot storage, because those live outside the payload. Pickling staticmethod/classmethod raises TypeError again.

Things to check in review:

  • InstanceDict::with() now does an incref/decref around the call instead of borrowing under a read lock.
  • instance_dict() reads the type flags on every call.
  • MemberAccess::TupleItem stays: struct sequence elements are tuple indexes, not addressable fields.

Tested locally: fmt, workspace and capi clippy/tests, and 28 regrtest modules including test_descr, test_pickle, test_gc and test_threading.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pull request adds field-based #[pymember] declarations and byte-offset member access. It updates built-in attribute descriptors, atomic-reference storage, instance dictionaries, frame tracing state, pickle-state sizing, and closure assignment.

Changes

Member Descriptors and Object State

Layer / File(s) Summary
Declare and register members
crates/derive-impl/src/pyclass.rs, crates/derive/src/lib.rs, crates/vm/src/class.rs, crates/vm/src/vm/context.rs, crates/vm/src/builtins/getset.rs, crates/stdlib/src/pyexpat.rs
#[pymember] metadata is extracted from payload fields or structs and emitted as member specifications with layout checks. Class registration installs descriptors. Getset construction now receives the context.
Implement offset-based descriptor access
crates/vm/src/builtins/descriptor.rs, crates/capi/src/descrobject.rs, crates/vm/src/builtins/{type,complex,function,getset,module,property,staticmethod,classmethod}.rs
Member descriptors read and write fields by byte offset. The implementation supports object, boolean, and double members. Built-in attributes use the new member declarations and access model.
Implement atomic reference cells
crates/vm/src/object/{ext,traverse}.rs
PyAtomicRef uses shared helpers for pointer-cell operations. Nullable typed cells and traversal use the shared cell layout.
Store instance dictionaries atomically
crates/vm/src/object/{core,traverse_object}.rs
Instance dictionaries use an embedded atomic reference cell. Access, insertion, traversal, garbage collection, and finalization use the updated cell and type flags.
Use atomic references for built-in fields
crates/vm/src/builtins/{classmethod,function,property,staticmethod}.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_collections.rs
Selected fields use PyAtomicRef. Related member declarations, access, initialization, clearing, and traversal use atomic-reference operations.
Update frame and execution state
crates/vm/src/{builtins/frame.rs,frame.rs,builtins/object.rs,vm/mod.rs}
Frame tracing state is stored on FrameObject and read through a shared lookup. The pickle-state size limit and closure assignment behavior also change.

Change: Refactor

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 9a18d

Common attribute reads can use an incompatible fast path and may crash the interpreter. Restrict slot specialization to atomic-cell-backed members before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟠 High · up to 9a18d

A cached attribute write may address the wrong memory when a class has enough slots for its field offset to exceed the cache’s range. Because Python code can define classes and write their attributes, this needs security review before the new layout is relied on.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: A specialized attribute write narrows a byte offset without checking that it fits, potentially writing outside the intended slot for a sufficiently large Python-defined class.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The offset-width concern is reachable through VM attribute-store specialization for Python-defined member slots and could affect the hosting interpreter process. No tenant or deployment isolation boundary is established by the supplied evidence.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A class with a slot offset outside the signed 16-bit range can supply that offset to specialization. A subsequent cached attribute store sign-converts the narrowed value before using it as a pointer-cell address; execution and exploitability have not been demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Descriptor owner checks and the audited-read specialization guard constrain ordinary reads, but the specialized store’s type-version guard does not check offset representability.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Frame construction links its inner interpreter frame to the owning frame object, including the chain-materialization path. This is counterevidence to a suspected tracing-flag desynchronization from an unlinked copy.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Reject offsets that cannot round-trip through the optimized store cache, or use a cache representation wide enough for every valid slot offset; verify the boundary with a large Python-defined slot layout.

Preserve cfg attributes on generated member registration.

attrs_to_content_items already extracts the leading cfg attributes and passes them through ImplItemArgs, but MemberItem discards them. Since the member const is then stripped, the generated code is unconditional. A cfg-gated declaration can register a member when it should not exist, or can leave #check and offset_of!(Self, field) referencing a cfg-disabled field.

Store the cfg attributes, apply them to both generated statements, and include them in duplicate-name validation.

Reject writable double members, or require a cell type.

The layout match maps double to DoubleMember whether or not readonly is set. DoubleMember is implemented only for plain f64. For a writable member, member_set_one then writes f64 through a pointer derived from &PyObject. That mutates a field that has no UnsafeCell. It is undefined behavior, and under threading it is also a data race with concurrent readers. Bool members already require BoolCell (AtomicBool) when writable, so double members should follow the same rule.

Reject (Some("double"), false, _) in MemberNursery::add_item with a syn::Error such as "writable double members are not supported".

Report malformed member expressions instead of using unsafe fallbacks.

If offset = "..." does not parse, the generated code uses offset 0. PyObject::get_slot(0) then interprets the object’s first bytes, which contain ref_count, as a PyAtomicRef<PyObject>. This can create an invalid object reference and cause undefined behavior at runtime. The explicit-offset path also skips the generated field-type check.

Parse field and offset in MemberItem::gen_impl_item, return a syn::Error at the attribute span, and store the parsed token streams in MemberDecl. Do not use quote!(0) for an invalid offset. The field fallback can hide malformed input behind a compile error or select a real field named field.

Expose the #[pymember] support API used by the expansion.

The expansion references ::rustpython_vm::builtins::descriptor::.... The descriptor module, marker traits, and PY_AUDIT_READ are crate-private. Existing public reexports do not include these items. A #[pyclass] impl in rustpython-stdlib or another downstream crate can therefore fail to compile.

Make the module and all symbols referenced by the expansion public. Mark them #[doc(hidden)] if they should remain hidden from generated documentation.

<location>https://docs.python.org/3/c-api/structures.html</location>
<excerpt>type PyMemberDef¶ : Part of the Stable ABI (including all members). ... Structure which describes an attribute of a type which corresponds to a C struct member. When defining a class, put a NULL-terminated array of these structures in the `tp_members` slot. ... int flags¶ : Zero or more of the Member flags, combined using bitwise OR. ... By default (when `flags` is `0`), members allow both read and write access. Use the `Py_READONLY` flag for read-only access. Certain types, like `Py_T_STRING`, imply `Py_READONLY`. Only `Py_T_OBJECT_EX` (and legacy `T_OBJECT`) members can be deleted. ... For heap-allocated types (created using `PyType_FromSpec()` or similar), `PyMemberDef` may contain a definition for the special member `&quot;__vectorcalloffset__&quot;`, corresponding to `tp_vectorcall_offset` in type objects. This member must be defined with `Py_T_PYSSIZET`, and either `Py_READONLY` or `Py_READONLY | Py_RELATIVE_OFFSET`. For example: ... ### Member flags¶ ... The following flags can be used with `PyMemberDef.flags`: ... Py_READONLY¶ : Part of the Stable ABI since version 3.12. ... Not writable. ... Py_RELATIVE_OFFSET¶ : Part of the Stable ABI since version 3.12. ... Can only be used as part of the `Py_tp_members` `slot` when creating a class using negative `basicsize`. It is mandatory in that case. When setting `tp_members` from the slot during class creation, Python clears the flag and sets `PyMemberDef.offset` to the offset from the `PyObject` struct. ... 3.10: The `RESTRICTED`, ` ... Changed in version 3.12: The `READONLY` macro was renamed to `Py_READONLY`. The `PY_AUDIT_READ` macro was renamed with the `Py_` prefix. The new names are now always available. Previously, these required `#include &quot;structmember.h&quot;`. The header is still available and it provides the old names. ... `PyMemberDef.type` can be one of the following macros corresponding to various C types. When the member is accessed in Python, it will be converted to the equivalent Python type. When it is set from Python, it will be converted back to the C type. If that is not possible, an exception such as `TypeError` or `ValueError` is raised. ... | Py_T_PYSSIZET¶ Part of the Stable ABI since version 3.12. | Py_ssize_t | `int` | ... | Py_T_DOUBLE¶ Part of the Stable ABI since version 3.12. | double | `float` | ... | Py_ ... _STRING¶ Part of the Stable ABI since version 3.12. | const char* (*) | `str` (RO) | ... &gt; (*): Zero-terminated, UTF8-encoded C string. With `Py_T_STRING` the C representation is a pointer; with `Py_T_STRING_INPLACE` the string is stored directly in the structure. &gt; &gt; (**): String of length 1. Only ASCII is accepted. &gt; &gt; (RO): Implies `Py_READONLY`. &gt; &gt; (D): Can be deleted, in which case the pointer is set to `NULL`. Reading a `NULL` pointer raises `AttributeError`. ... <title>3. Defining Extension Types: Assorted Topics — Python 3.14.7 documentation</title>

<excerpt>/* Attribute descriptor and subclassing stuff */ PyMethodDef *tp_methods; PyMemberDef *tp_members; PyGetSetDef *tp_getset; ... When `PyType_Ready()` is called, it uses three tables referenced by the type object to create descriptor s which are placed in the dictionary of the type object. Each descriptor controls access to one attribute of the instance object. Each of the tables is optional; if all three are `NULL`, instances of the type will only have attributes that are inherited from their base type, and should leave the `tp_getattro` and `tp_setattro` fields `NULL` as well, allowing the base type to handle attributes. ... are declared as ... fields of the ... ``` struct PyMethodDef *tp_methods; struct PyMemberDef *tp_members; struct PyGetSetDef *tp_getset; ... The second table is used to define attributes which map directly to data stored in the instance. A variety of primitive C types are supported, and access may be read-only or read-write. The structures in the table are defined as: ... ``` typedef struct PyMemberDef { const char *name; int type; int offset; int flags; const char *doc; } PyMemberDef; ``` ... For each entry in the table, a descriptor will be constructed and added to the type which will be able to extract a value from the instance structure. The `type` field should contain a type code like `Py_T_INT` or `Py_T_DOUBLE`; the value will be used to determine how to convert Python values to and from C values. The `flags` field is used to store flags which control how the attribute can be accessed: you can set it to `Py_READONLY` to prevent Python code from setting it. ... An interesting advantage of using the `tp_members` table to build descriptors that are used at runtime is that any attribute defined this way can have an associated doc string simply by providing the text in the table. An application can use the introspection API to retrieve the descriptor from the class object, and get the doc string using its `__doc__` attribute.</excerpt>

`PyMember ... The header is still available and it provides the old names. ... `PyMemberDef.type` can be one of the following macros corresponding to various C types. <title>3. Defining Extension Types: Assorted Topics — Python 3.14.7 documentation</title>
<location>https://docs.python.org/3/extending/newtypes.html</location>
<excerpt>When `PyType_Ready()` is called, it uses three tables referenced by the type object to create descriptor s which are placed in the dictionary of the type object. Each descriptor controls access to one attribute of the instance object. Each of the tables is optional; if all three are `NULL`, instances of the type will only have attributes that are inherited from their base type, and should leave the `tp_getattro` and `tp_setattro` fields `NULL` as well, allowing the base type to handle attributes. ... The tables are declared as three fields of the ...

<excerpt>Descriptor Objects — Python 3.14.7 documentation # Descriptor Objects¶ “Descriptors” are objects that describe some attribute of an object. They are found in the dictionary of type objects. PyTypeObject PyProperty_Type¶ : Part of the Stable ABI. The type object for the built-in descriptor types. PyObject * PyDescr_NewGetSet(PyTypeObject * type, struct PyGetSetDef * getset)¶ : Return value: New reference. Part of the Stable ABI. Create a new get-set descriptor for extension type type from the `PyGetSetDef` structure getset. Get-set descriptors expose attributes implemented by C getter and setter functions rather than stored directly in the instance. This is the same kind of descriptor created for entries in `tp_getset`, and it appears in Python as a `types.GetSetDescriptorType` object. On success, return a strong reference to the descriptor. Return `NULL` with an exception set on failure. PyObject * PyDescr_NewMember(PyTypeObject * type, struct PyMemberDef * member)¶ : Return value: New reference. Part of the Stable ABI. Create a new member descriptor for extension type type from the `PyMemberDef` structure member. Member descriptors expose fields in the type’s C struct as Python attributes. This is the same kind of descriptor created for entries in `tp_members`, and it appears in Python as a `types.MemberDescriptorType` object. On success, return a strong reference to the descriptor. Return `NULL` with an exception set on failure. PyTypeObject PyMemberDescr_Type¶ : Part of the Stable ABI. The type object for member descriptor objects created from `PyMemberDef` structures. These descriptors expose fields of a C struct as attributes on a type, and correspond to `types.MemberDescriptorType` objects in Python. PyTypeObject PyGetSetDescr_Type¶ : Part of the Stable ABI. The type object for get/set descriptor objects created from `PyGetSetDef` structures. These descriptors implement attributes whose value is computed by C getter and setter functions, and are used for many built-in type attributes. They correspond to `types.GetSetDescriptorType` objects in Python. PyObject * PyDescr_NewMethod(PyTypeObject * type, struct PyMethodDef * meth)¶ : Return value: New reference. Part of the Stable ABI. Create a new method descriptor for extension type type from the `PyMethodDef` structure meth. Method descriptors expose C functions as methods on a type. This is the same kind of descriptor created for entries in `tp_methods`, and it appears in Python as a `types.MethodDescriptorType` object. On success, return a strong reference to the descriptor. Return `NULL` with an exception set on failure. PyTypeObject PyMethodDescr_Type¶ : Part of the Stable ABI. The type object for method descriptor objects created from `PyMethodDef` structures. These descriptors expose C functions as methods on a type, and correspond to `types.MethodDescriptorType` objects in Python. struct wrapperbase¶ : Describes a slot wrapper used by `PyDescr_NewWrapper()`. Each `wrapperbase` record stores the Python-visible name and metadata for a special method implemented by a type slot, together with the wrapper function used to adapt that slot to Python’s calling convention. PyObject * PyDescr_NewWrapper(PyTypeObject * type, struct wrapperbase * base, void * wrapped)¶ : Return value: New reference. Create a new wrapper descriptor for extension type type from the `wrapperbase` structure base and the wrapped slot function pointer wrapped. Wrapper descriptors expose special methods implemented by type slots. This is the same kind of descriptor that CPython creates for slot-based special methods such as `__repr__` or `__add__`, and it appears in Python as a `types.WrapperDescriptorType` object. On success, return a strong reference to the descriptor. Return `NULL` with an exception set on failure. PyTypeObject PyWrapperDescr_Type¶ : Part of the Stable ABI. Synchronize writable C-API double members.

PyDescr_NewMember accepts writable T_DOUBLE members, but member_set_one writes the inline payload through a plain f64. PyObjectRef is Send and Sync with threading enabled, while VM attachment and the exported critical sections provide no lock. Concurrent descriptor access can therefore race on the payload and cause undefined behavior.

Keep writable T_DOUBLE support because the C-API contract requires it when Py_READONLY is absent. Route C-API double reads and writes through synchronized or atomic access instead of rejecting this member kind.

Treat an explicit None factory as absent in __reduce__.

When Python assigns d.default_factory = None, the new member stores None as an object reference. This load then produces (None,) as the reduction arguments instead of (). A subclass that accepts no factory argument can fail during unpickling. Filter out Python None before building factory_tuple_elements. The previous setter normalized None to an empty factory, and CPython also omits the argument for None. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

`#[pymember]` now declares a field of the payload and generates a
PyMemberDef whose offset is the payload offset plus the field offset.
The getter/setter function form and `MemberAccess::Func` are removed;
builtin, slot, and C-API members share one get/set path. The macro
checks the field type against the member type.

Converted members: property fget/fset/fdel/__doc__, function
__globals__/__closure__/__builtins__/__doc__/__module__, staticmethod
and classmethod __func__/__wrapped__, complex real/imag (T_DOUBLE),
frame f_trace_lines (T_BOOL), defaultdict default_factory, getset and
member descriptor __name__/__objclass__, module __dict__.
frame.f_trace_opcodes is a getset.

Writable member fields are atomic pointer cells. The instance dict
pointer is an atomic cell at a fixed offset in front of the object,
and dict presence follows the type's HAS_DICT flag. The pickle
basicsize check no longer counts dict, weakref, and slot storage,
which live outside the payload.

- `#[pymember]` keeps leading `#[cfg]` attributes on the generated
registration, and malformed `field`/`offset` values are compile
  errors.
- The `descriptor` module and the items the expansion names are public.
- Writable double members are an `AtomicU64` cell, loaded and stored
with relaxed atomics. Readonly double members stay plain `f64` reads.
- `LOAD_ATTR_SLOT` is not specialized for `Py_AUDIT_READ` members.
- `defaultdict.__reduce__` passes no factory argument when
  `default_factory` is None.

`#[pymember]` goes on a payload struct field, or on the struct with an
explicit `offset` when the storage is not a payload field. The struct
`#[pyclass]` builds `PyClassDef::MEMBERS`, a static `PyMemberSpec`
table, and `extend_class` registers one member descriptor per entry.
`path` addresses a subfield, one field may carry several members, and a
`#[cfg]` on the field gates its entry. The impl-side const form is
removed and now a compile error.

The nullable cell API (`new_empty`, `load_owned`, `store`,
`compare_exchange_empty`) moves from `PyAtomicRef<PyObject>` to
`PyAtomicRef<Option<PyObject>>`, and the typed `PyAtomicRef<Option<T>>`
shares it. The non-null `PyAtomicRef<PyObject>` gets `load_owned` and
`store` that return the object directly.

Slot cells, property fget/fset/fdel/__doc__, and defaultdict
default_factory are nullable cells. staticmethod and classmethod
callable are non-null cells and are read without `unwrap`. The
instance dict cell is `PyAtomicRef<Option<PyDict>>`, so reading it no
longer downcasts.

`FrameColdData::trace_lines` had no writer after `f_trace_lines`
became a frame object member. A frame without a frame object traces
lines by default.

`PyInner` is now `Py`, so the payload offset and the dict member
offset are measured from `Py<T>`.

method_descriptor, classmethod_descriptor, and wrapper_descriptor
expose `__objclass__` and `__name__` as readonly members, and
method-wrapper exposes `__self__` as a readonly member. The separate
`objclass` field of method and classmethod descriptors always equaled
`common.typ` and is removed.

Attributes stored in a payload field become readonly or writable
member descriptors: bound method __func__/__self__, code
co_argcount/co_posonlyargcount/co_kwonlyargcount/co_stacksize (Py_T_UINT),
generic alias, coroutine and async generator members, interpolation and
template, range and slice start/stop/step, type __base__, union, and the
typing TypeVar, ParamSpec, TypeVarTuple, and TypeAliasType members.
`MemberKind` gains `Int` and `Uint` with the `PyMember_GetOne`/`SetOne`
range checks.

Attributes computed on access or kept behind a lock stay getsets.

`#[pymember(doc = false)]` stores no docstring, matching the
`doc = "..."` form, and replaces the separate `no_doc` flag.

`#[pymember]` declares a readonly member unless `writable` is given.
The `readonly` option is removed and every declaration is converted.

Binding or calling a method_descriptor with an object that is not an
instance of the owner type raises TypeError before the native function
runs. Static and class methods are exempt.

BaseException.__suppress_context__, StopIteration.value, SystemExit.code,
ImportError, NameError, AttributeError, OSError, SyntaxError,
BaseExceptionGroup and the UnicodeEncode/Decode/TranslateError attributes
are member descriptors backed by payload fields. ImportError, NameError,
AttributeError and SyntaxError gain payloads for their fields, and the
methods that read those attributes read the fields. Add the Py_ssize_t
member kind for UnicodeError start and end.

On targets where c_ulong is u32, casting through c_ulong was a no-op
cast that clippy rejects.

doc = "text" is used as the docstring without consulting the stored
attribute documentation; only an omitted doc looks it up. Drop the member
doc strings that repeated the stored documentation.

MemberLayout gives the member kind of each accepted field type, and the
macro reads it from the field or path subfield, so type = "bool" and
the other numeric spellings are gone. type only selects object_ex.
Writable doubles use a new AtomicF64 cell instead of AtomicU64 bits.
MemberLayout and MemberCell replace the per-kind marker traits.

PyAtomicRef<Option<T>> and PyAtomicRef<Option<PyObject>> lose to_owned,
to_owned_ordering and try_to_owned; load_owned, which retries the
incref until it applies to the pointer still in the cell, is the one
owned read. Callers that kept a deref borrow across VM calls now take a
strong reference.

extend_class copied slots only from the direct bases, and tp_init is
copied only from a base that defines it, so TabError missed the
SyntaxError init that IndentationError inherits. Walk the MRO the same
way init_slots does.

A /// comment on a Python-exposed item is its docstring; the
rustpython-doc entry is used only when there is none. #[pymember] reads
the field's /// comment instead of doc = "...". Doc comments that were
shadowed by a stored docstring become // comments, so no docstring
changes. AGENTS.md describes the rule.

_collections._tuplegetter.__doc__ is a writable nullable member on the
payload field. The impl-side const form no longer compiles.

Comments that only repeated an item's docstring are removed; developer
notes stay as // comments. The typed cell methods call
downcast_unchecked directly, each with its own safety note.

The nullable cell no longer has to_owned; the sqlite module is built only
with the sqlite feature, so the default build did not catch it.
