Follow-up to #8816.

  • type.__module__ reads the type dict only for heap types. Static types take the text before the last . of their name, or builtins. Before this, types.FunctionType.__module__ returned the new function.__module__ member descriptor. Static types that relied on a dict entry now carry their module: ast nodes, pyexpat, ssl, _hashlib and _interpchannels errors, and ExceptionGroup.
  • More getsets become member descriptors: code, super, traceback, type.__itemsize__, builtin_function_or_method.__module__, decompressors, _io buffered/text wrappers, functools.partial, socket, select.kevent, SemLock, Pickler, pyexpat, ElementTree, unicodedata, and multibytecodec streams. Values that changed under a lock are now atomic cells on the payload.
  • New member kinds Short, Long, String, UShort, ULong, LongLong and ULongLong. Each reads and writes exactly the width of its C type.
  • SimpleNamespace.__dict__ uses the instance dict cell, as module.__dict__ does. slots.basicsize holds the full tp_basicsize. Type flags are one atomic word that __abstractmethods__ and _abc update in place, replacing the separate abc_tpflags word, so __basicsize__ and __flags__ are members too.
  • super.__new__(super) leaves all three fields empty.
  • Static types carry tp_itemsize and inherit it from their base.
  • _thread._ExceptHookArgs is a struct sequence.

co_consts, co_names, co_linetable, co_exceptiontable and co_firstlineno stay getsets for now. They need CodeObject itself to store tuples, bytes and a C int, which is left for a separate PR.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This pull request updates Python type and module metadata, adds C-compatible member layouts, and moves state in runtime and standard-library objects into atomic fields. It also changes traceback offsets to signed integers and represents _ExceptHookArgs as a struct sequence.

Changes

Python runtime compatibility and object state

Layer / File(s) Summary
Type flags, layouts, and variable-size objects
crates/vm/src/types/slot.rs, crates/vm/src/builtins/descriptor.rs, crates/vm/src/builtins/type.rs, crates/vm/src/class.rs, crates/vm/src/builtins/*, crates/vm/src/vm/vm_new.rs, crates/capi/src/descrobject.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/function.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_sre.rs, crates/compiler-core/src/bytecode.rs, crates/vm/src/object/*
Type flags move to atomic storage. Member descriptors gain C integer and string layouts. Type declarations and object-size calculations account for item sizes and object headers.
Type and module metadata
crates/derive-impl/src/*, crates/capi/src/object/pytype.rs, crates/vm/src/builtins/{type,builtin_func,classmethod,staticmethod,object,genericalias}.rs, crates/vm/src/function/method.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ast/*, crates/stdlib/src/{ssl/error,pyexpat}.rs, crates/vm/src/{exception_group,stdlib/sys}.rs
Type module lookup returns results, and fully qualified names propagate lookup errors. Exception and AST class declarations specify module names. Native functions expose __module__ as a Python object reference. Related consumers update module lookup handling.
Atomic Python-visible runtime state
crates/vm/src/builtins/super.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/{_functools,_io}.rs, crates/stdlib/src/{bz2,lzma,zlib,elementtree,pickle,select,socket,socket_wasm,cjkcodecs/multibytecodec,contextvars,pyexpat}.rs
Runtime and standard-library objects store references or scalar values in atomic fields. Their constructors, traversal, and access paths use these fields in place of combined locked state or getter methods.
Native handle and C-string members
crates/host_env/src/multiprocessing.rs, crates/stdlib/src/{multiprocessing,unicodedata}.rs
Semaphore fields use pointer-sized handle storage and CString-backed names. Unicode database versions use owned C strings exposed through member descriptors.
Traceback offsets and thread-hook arguments
crates/vm/src/{builtins/traceback,coroutine,frame}.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_thread.rs
Traceback offsets use signed integers, and traceback fields use member annotations. _ExceptHookArgs becomes a four-field struct sequence read by _excepthook.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 998a4

Resolve the descriptor access before merging: it can be invalid on affected 32-bit layouts. The hook, substitution, and concurrent partial-call paths also retain incorrect behavior.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 998a4

Most changes preserve existing entrypoints, but replacing a partial object's shared state lock with independently updated fields can expose inconsistent state during concurrent use. No privilege bypass is established; the concern is that calls or serialized state may no longer reflect one valid update.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Concurrent partial state replacement can expose a combination of fields that was never validated together, affecting call dispatch and reconstruction.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inconsistent-state path is scoped to a shared partial object undergoing concurrent state replacement and use. No cross-tenant or higher-privilege reachability is established by the available source.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — State assignment validates the supplied callable, argument tuple, keywords and placeholder placement before publication. Those checks do not make the four subsequent stores one transaction for concurrent readers.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Independent atomic loads prevent neither a mixed call snapshot nor a mixed serialized or nested-partial state. This matters where applications rely on a partial's callable and arguments as one control decision, although such a deployment is not established here.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Publish the dependent partial fields as one immutable state snapshot, or restore a common synchronization boundary for publication and reads; assess repeated and concurrent state replacement against call and serialization paths.

Commit entity and target only after handler construction succeeds.

optional_handler(...)? can fail after the atomic references are swapped. During reinitialization, check() then sees the new target but returns the old state.parser. Subsequent parsing can therefore use the previous parser and callbacks. Build the state first, then swap both references.

Compute type names only when tuple validation fails.

A protocol-compatible unpacked argument can return a valid tuple from __typing_subst__. The current code calls both fallible fully_qualified_name methods before tuple validation, so a raising __module__ lookup can reject a valid substitution. Before this change, these calls ran only while formatting the non-tuple error. This is a narrow edge-case correctness issue.

🐛 Suggested fix

Protect the complete PyPartial state snapshot.

PyAtomicRef protects each field, but it does not make the four-field state atomic. A thread can load func before __setstate__ stores the new state, then load args, keywords, and phcount afterward. The call can therefore invoke the old function with the new arguments or use a placeholder count that does not match args. Protect the complete store and every complete snapshot with one shared read/write lock. Release the read lock before calling Python code.

Fix the error message to name the actual type.

The error message states "_thread.excepthook argument type must be ExceptHookArgs". The actual public type is _ExceptHookArgs, not ExceptHookArgs. Use the correct name so the message helps a developer find the right type.

Use attribute reduction for non-string __module__ values.

A bound native method with __module__ set to a non-string returns only its name from __reduce__. Pickling then calls whichmodule, which raises PicklingError: "__module__ must be a string". Use the getattr reduction unless __module__ is a string.

Leave all three fields empty in super.__new__.

super.__new__(super) reaches Constructor::py_new, which passes object_type to bind_super. bind_super preserves that type when the object is None, so __thisclass__ becomes object. Python returns None for all three fields and uses <super: <class 'NULL'>, NULL> for repr. Make typ nullable and handle the empty value in each thisclass() caller.

A static type's `__module__` is the text before the last `.` of its name,
or `builtins`. A heap type reads its dict and raises `AttributeError`
when the entry is missing; `type` and `object` reprs ignore that error.
`type()` no longer stores `__module__ = None` when the caller's globals
have no `__name__`.

`#[pyexception(module = ...)]` now reaches the type name, and static
types that relied on a dict `__module__` (ast nodes, pyexpat, ssl,
_hashlib and _interpchannels errors, ExceptionGroup) carry their module.

`co_nlocals` is stored at construction, and the builtin function
`__module__` is a writable object cell.

`super.__new__(super)` leaves `__thisclass__`, `__self__` and

zero-argument path when bound.

Static types carry their `tp_itemsize` (`type`, `memoryview`, `code`,

their direct base when they leave it at 0, and a variable-size base

`SimpleNamespace.__dict__` addresses the instance dict cell the same way
`module.__dict__` does. `slots.basicsize` now holds the full
`tp_basicsize` (header plus payload), so `__basicsize__` reads it
directly. Type flags are one atomic word: `__abstractmethods__` and
`_abc` set their bits in it in place, the separate `abc_tpflags` word is
gone, and `__flags__` reads the word as an unsigned long member.

Track atomic storage separately from MemberKind.

u64 and AtomicU64 both map to MemberKind::ULongLong when c_ulong is 4 bytes. A readonly plain u64 member can therefore reach load_u64. On a target where that field is only 4-byte aligned, the current AtomicU64 access is invalid.

The proposed alignment check is not sufficient. A plain u64 can also be 8-byte aligned, but alignment does not make an AtomicU64 access valid for non-atomic storage. Preserve the atomic load only for members declared with atomic storage. Add explicit storage metadata, such as a separate MemberLayout flag or member kind, and dispatch the readonly load from that metadata.
