  • Closes #xxxx

One of checkbox below must be checked.

  • I did not use AI to write the code of this patch.
  • This PR follows our AI policy

Summary

Follow-up to #8804.

  • A value stored in a slot is not marked published, so it can return to the freelist. With threading, only the value that leaves the slot is marked, so its free waits out a reader that already loaded the pointer.
  • Without threading, a slot read is one incref.
  • Member cells sit in the object allocation ahead of the extension header, instead of a boxed slice.
  • A slot member's offset is the byte distance from the object to that cell. Specialized loads and stores use the address. A relative C offset is resolved by adding the object header and the type's basic size.

— commented by Grok 4.7

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added support for relative offsets when defining extension object members, allowing member locations to be specified relative to the object layout.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved access to __slots__ attributes, including on objects that support weak references and when slots are located before extension data.
    • Improved slot-reference handling during garbage collection and in threaded builds, helping ensure slot values are accessed and managed correctly.

Member cells now sit in the object allocation ahead of the extension
header, so a slot read is one pointer instead of a boxed slice. A
value stored in a slot is not marked published. With threading, only
the value that leaves the slot is, so its free can wait out a reader.
Without threading a slot read is a single incref.

A slot member's offset is the byte distance from the object to its
inline pointer cell. Loads and stores, including the specialized
instructions, use that address. A relative C offset is resolved by
adding the object header and the type's basic size.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Member-slot cells move from ObjExt into the object allocation region before it. Slot offsets become signed byte offsets from the object. Descriptor construction, attribute access, allocation, deallocation, and GC operations use this layout. Relative offsets are adjusted by the object-header size and type basicsize.

Changes

Member-slot layout and access

Layer / File(s) Summary
Allocate member cells before ObjExt
crates/vm/src/object/core.rs, crates/vm/src/builtins/type.rs
ObjExt no longer stores member cells. Object layout helpers calculate the cell region and offsets, and object construction initializes the cells there. __slots__ descriptors use offsets from the layout helper.
Build and use signed slot offsets
crates/capi/src/descrobject.rs, crates/vm/src/builtins/descriptor.rs, crates/vm/src/frame.rs, crates/vm/src/object/core.rs, crates/vm/src/object/mod.rs
C API member definitions adjust relative offsets and pass offsets and flags to descriptors. Descriptor access, specialized attribute instructions, and object slot access use signed byte offsets. SIZEOF_PYOBJECT_HEAD is publicly re-exported.
Clear and traverse slot cells
crates/vm/src/object/core.rs, crates/vm/src/object/ext.rs, crates/vm/src/object/traverse_object.rs
Deallocation and GC operations access slot cells in the allocation region. Traversal visits each cell individually. PyAtomicRef load and store behavior varies with the threading feature.

Reject PY_RELATIVE_OFFSET members until the slot layout supports them.

PyMemberDef::build converts a relative offset to a positive offset and uses MemberAccess::Slot. The slot accessor adds that offset to PyInner and casts the address to PyAtomicRef<PyObject>. Member cells are allocated and initialized only in the prefix before PyInner. Therefore, a relative member with offset = 0 can read PyInner memory as a pointer cell, and larger offsets can access memory outside the allocation. A setter can corrupt that memory.

MemberKind::Bool also reaches this pointer-cell path. T_INT and T_CHAR codes are rejected, but T_BOOL is accepted without an object-kind check.

Suggested fix

Do not specialize stores with offsets outside the signed 16-bit range.

StoreAttrSlot stores an isize offset as u16 and reads it as i16. Python slot layouts and C member descriptors use isize offsets without an i16 range check. An out-of-range offset therefore becomes a different address, and owner.set_slot can write through an unrelated pointer.

Suggested fix
                 && let Some(offset) = member_descr
                     .slot_offset()
+                    .filter(|offset| i16::try_from(*offset).is_ok())
                     .filter(|_| !member_descr.member.readonly())

Cell 0 sits directly in front of the extension header. Further slots
extend away from the object, so a member offset computed for a base
class still addresses the same cell on a subclass.

On 32-bit targets an odd slot count is not a multiple of ObjExt's
alignment. The padding now sits in front of the cells, so cell 0
stays immediately before the header. The non-threading slot load is
also the function's return value.

Assisted-by: Grok:4.7
A subclass that adds a weakref list no longer inserts it between
ObjExt and the object, so inherited member offsets stay valid.
