  • Closes #xxxx

One of checkbox below must be checked.

  • I did not use AI to write the code of this patch.
  • This PR follows our AI policy

Summary

First step toward PyMemberDef matching the C layout (name, type, offset, flags, doc).

Instance __slots__ values move from PyRwLock<Option<PyObjectRef>> to an atomic PyObject* cell:

  • Readers try-incref and retry if the slot pointer changed.
  • A value stored in a slot is marked published, so its memory is reclaimed only after a QSBR grace period (immediately when threading is off).
  • GC traverses the atomic pointer with the world stopped, without taking a slot lock.

offset is still a slot index. Inline placement, so that offset is a byte offset from the object, is a later change.

— commented by Grok 4.7

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Read-only slot attributes now follow the standard attribute-setting path instead of being treated as writable.
    • Invalid member descriptor operations return system errors, and attempts to modify read-only attributes return read-only attribute errors.
  • Improvements

    • Object slot reads and updates now use atomic access.
    • Member descriptors provide consistent attribute access and assignment for slots, tuple items, and custom attributes.
    • Long numeric inputs that exceed the configured digit limit are rejected earlier.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Member descriptors now use numeric type codes, flags, and explicit access modes. Object slots use atomic references. Integer parsing adds an early digit-limit check for long ASCII-digit inputs, with tests for plain digits and underscore-containing inputs.

Stop the world before non-collector referent scans.

PyAtomicRef::load_ptr() returns a borrowed pointer that is valid only while the slot is unchanged. Its contract requires traversal with other threads stopped. The new Traverse implementation passes that borrowed object to the callback without acquiring ownership.

gc.get_referents then calls child.to_owned(), which unconditionally increments the reference count. If another thread replaces the slot and drops the last reference between load_ptr() and to_owned(), this path can increment a deallocated object and later double-drop it. gc.get_referrers has the same precondition because it calls gc_get_referent_ptrs() without stopping the world.

Guard both public scans with stop-the-world, or add a slot-specific owned snapshot for each path. Do not call load_owned() inside the generic Traverse implementation because the Traverse contract forbids cloning references and collector traversal must not change reference counts.

🟡 Minor · Exclude PY_T_BOOL members from StoreAttrSlot specialization. · frame.rs:12008-12023

crates/vm/src/frame.rs:12008-12023
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Exclude PY_T_BOOL members from StoreAttrSlot specialization.

PyMemberDef::build accepts writable PY_T_BOOL members. The specialization does not check member.type_code. A matching StoreAttrSlot cache writes directly with owner.set_slot, so a non-boolean value bypasses the generic check and does not raise TypeError("attribute value type must be bool").

PyMemberDef now carries type, offset, and flags. Slot values are
atomic PyObject pointers with try-incref reads, so a concurrent
store cannot free the memory under a reader. Objects placed in a
slot stay published until QSBR reclaims them.

Preserve PY_AUDIT_READ and bypass the slot fast path for audited members.

PyDescr_NewMember accepts PY_AUDIT_READ, but PyMemberDef::build stores only PY_READONLY. Generic reads therefore skip object.__getattr__. Optimized LoadAttrSlot reads also bypass PyMemberDescriptor::get, so preserving the flag alone is not sufficient.

A pure ASCII digit string longer than the int digit limit now fails
from a wide digit check. The denial-of-service test no longer spends
the failure path scanning and parsing the whole literal.

The VM stores the member type as an enum whose discriminants match
the C type codes. The C API still reads the integer and converts it
at the boundary. Flags stay integers.
