Webflow's new Source platform gives marketing teams and AI agents shared, governed access to site code — its biggest push yet beyond visual website building.

The Gist

  • AI-powered workspace. Source offers marketing teams code-native AI agent workspaces.

  • Unified collaboration. Marketers and agencies can build and manage digital experiences together.

  • Team productivity boost. Marketing leaders gain tools for faster, governed site updates with less reliance on engineering workflows.

BOSTON — Webflow on Sept. 2 unveiled Source by Webflow at Webflow Conf 2026 at the Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport. The platform, available as a limited research preview, gives marketing teams and AI agents a shared workspace to build, optimize and scale digital experiences, according to company officials.

The announcement came as Webflow execs took center stage in the blue-stained keynote room at the Beantown hotel. CEO Linda Tong set the stage for a future of "marketing excellence" where developers, designers and agents work together genuinely in real-time. Likely reading the room of possibly-jaded marketers and developers, Tong added she has no doubt marketers believe in this vision but "can also tell you we are nowhere close to it yet."

Tong promised Webflow would partner with marketers to realize this vision, evolving the web platform in how it works and "who it fundamentally works for." After all, as Webflow CMO Dave Steer said on stage Wednesday morning, AI Agents, which didn't exist a few short years ago, have their own budget line and read our websites just like we do.

"It has to serve marketers and now agents the way it has always served developers and designers," Tong added about technology like Webflow's, "and it has to bring this new team of builders together ... for this next era on the web."

The AEO Narrative: Future of Marketing

Marketers and brands still struggle to make sense of the intersection of AI search, search engine optimization and declining organic traffic. So it's not all cupcakes and flowers finding success in AI visibility.

It's HARD. Guy Yalif, the company's chief evangelist, shared on stage this morning how hard it is; results from a study on AEO maturity of US brands found the median company shows up in only 16% of the AI answers it would want to be part of, and earns a citation link just 6% of the time.

But he and Webflow execs on stage also extolled the virtues of its AEO, or Answer Engine Optimization offering, because, as Yalif said, your CEO is likely to often ask, "How we doing with AI search?"

He shared some positive numbers of AI visibility and citations with Webflow technologies baked into the backend of web development.

"This is the future of how marketing is done, and it's working today," Yalif said, citing for Webflow customers 120% more citation links back to their site, and 50% more organic traffic in production today than non-Webflow customers.

Inside the World of Webflow Source

The platform news today aims to start that journey in web and content experiences. Source connects to existing codebases and martech stacks, giving AI agents direct access to site code rather than routing work through a visual abstraction layer. This composable approach lets agents perform production-level tasks while brand standards, permissions and business rules govern what ships.

The announcement also included agent collaboration features, Webflow Campaigns, enhancements to the Webflow Model Context Protocol (MCP) and asset production capabilities powered by its earlier acquisition of Vidoso.

"Clients used to ask us about AI for one reason: speed. Now they expect it to scale across the website lifecycle and make them better marketers, not just faster ones. That's where Source comes in: build a page from a prompt, run agents with real guardrails so work gets done while you sleep, and give everyone on the team a view of only what they need to touch." — Matt Varughese, Partner/CEO, 8020

Recent Webflow News

Backed by more than $330 million in total funding — including a $120 million Series D closed in October 2025 at a $4 billion valuation — Webflow has shifted from visual website builder to AI-first marketing platform under CEO Linda Tong. The company laid groundwork in 2025 with Webflow Cloud for full-stack app hosting, real-time collaboration and App Gen for building production-grade applications natively.

The pace accelerated in 2026. A February Claude connector enabled Anthropic's model to design pages, manage content and run site audits. In March, Webflow acquired Vidoso.ai, a startup using large language models to generate brand-consistent marketing collateral. On July 21, the company released MCP 2.0, adding brand controls, permissions and analytics for AI agents — with adoption by more than 30% of enterprise customers and fourfold usage growth since January.

How Agentic Platforms Scale Web Experiences

Agentic marketing platforms embed AI agents that reason, act and optimize across content and workflows — removing the need for teams to coordinate every step.

From Composable to Agentic

Forrester describes "agentic digital experience platforms" as systems that actively coordinate composable components rather than simply assemble them. AI agents operate under human direction, accelerating experimentation and personalization at scale.

The MCP standard is central to this shift, enabling agents to pull real-time customer data from CRM systems, match it against content libraries and deliver tailored messages to micro-segments.

Governance & Collaboration Demands

As adaptive agents replace hard-coded logic in the martech stack, governance becomes a primary concern. Vendors now centralize brand compliance controls and build governed orchestration layers as a design standard.

Marketing ops teams face a structural challenge: faster agent-driven iteration demands QA, change management and vendor evaluation at a DevOps-style cadence, not an annual planning cycle.

Adoption Curve & Differentiation

Gartner placed agentic marketing at the peak of inflated expectations on its 2026 Hype Cycle. Only 17% of organizations have deployed AI agents so far, though more than 60% expect to within two years — the most aggressive adoption curve Gartner tracked among emerging technologies this year.

As agentic features converge across vendors, differentiation shifts to integration depth, data access and governance quality.

Webflow Background

Founded in 2013 in San Francisco, Webflow targets marketing and creative teams building and managing websites without coding expertise. It offers a visual website builder, headless CMS, hosting and AI-enabled tools, serving freelancers, agencies and enterprise organizations.
