Build kevent values for the target ABI
On the repository's x86_64-unknown-freebsd cross-check (.github/workflows/ci.yaml:327), libc 0.2.189 defines kevent with a required ext: [u64; 4], so this literal and the zero-valued literal below fail to compile; NetBSD also uses different widths for filter, flags, and data. Construct native events with target-specific initialization or an EV_SET-style helper rather than assuming the Apple/OpenBSD layout.

Applied: kevent values are built with field assignment after zeroing, so FreeBSD ext and other ABI widths compile.

Normalize nanoseconds before forming timespec
For a valid timeout whose fractional part rounds upward, such as 0.9999999999, this produces tv_nsec == 1_000_000_000, which is outside the required timespec range and makes kevent() return EINVAL instead of waiting. Carry that overflow into tv_sec and reset tv_nsec below one billion.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

Applied: fractional seconds that round to 1e9 ns now carry into tv_sec.

Keep the kqueue descriptor alive during control
When another Python thread calls close() after this raw descriptor is loaded but before the allow_threads closure enters kevent(), the descriptor can be closed and reused, causing control() to fail spuriously or operate on an unrelated kqueue. Unlike the epoll implementation, no read guard pins ownership through the syscall; hold a guard or otherwise serialize close() against control().
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Applied: control() holds a read lock on the kqueue fd so close() cannot reuse it during kevent().

When poll() receives a positive non-integral timeout, Duration::as_millis() truncates it before calling poll(2). For example, poll().poll(0.1) passes zero and returns immediately, while CPython rounds this to a 1 ms wait; 1.1 similarly needs 2 ms. Use a ceiling conversion both here and when recomputing the remaining timeout after EINTR so the call cannot return earlier than requested.

Release the kqueue guard before invoking Python
The new read guard remains held while extract_elements_with() iterates the user-provided changelist and while check_signals() runs handlers. If either callback calls kq.close(), close() waits for the write lock held by the same thread and RustPython hangs. This is fresh evidence after the prior close-race report: the added guard now spans Python execution; parse the changelist before acquiring it and drop it before running signal handlers while still pinning the descriptor around each syscall.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

Applied in e94559cca: changelist is parsed before taking the lock. The read guard is held only around kevent() and is dropped before check_signals().

Reject kqueue timeouts that overflow Instant
A timeout equal to float(2**63) passes the preceding secs > i64::MAX as f64 check because both sides round to the same floating-point value, saturates tv_sec to i64::MAX, and then panics in Instant::now() + Duration. Thus Python input can terminate the interpreter instead of raising OverflowError; construct the deadline with checked_add and reject values that cannot be represented.

Applied in e94559cca: kqueue and poll deadlines use Instant::checked_add and raise OverflowError instead of panicking.

Preserve pty skips where login_tty is unavailable
On Solaris and illumos this cfg leaves os.login_tty unavailable, but the same change removes the crash-preventing skips from test_pty. RustPython also has no os.forkpty, so pty.fork() necessarily reaches os.login_tty(slave_fd) in the forked test child, raises AttributeError, and can corrupt the parallel test runner as the removed comment described. Keep these tests skipped conditionally on hasattr(os, "login_tty") until the function is implemented on those targets.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Guard large float timeouts before Duration::from_secs_f64.
select.poll().poll() uses TimeoutArg<true>. A finite value such as 1e300 becomes 1e297 seconds and reaches Duration::from_secs_f64 before the later i32 timeout check. The conversion panics instead of returning the OverflowError used for oversized integer timeouts. Positive infinity has the same path.
