Leftover from #8721 review comments after the squash merge.

  • Hold the kqueue fd lock through kevent() and drop it before changelist parsing and check_signals().
  • Raise OverflowError when poll/kqueue timeouts overflow Instant or Duration.
  • Round poll millisecond timeouts upward.
  • Cast kevent default filter/flags for NetBSD field widths.
  • Provide os.login_tty on Solaris/illumos via setsid, TIOCSCTTY, and dup2.
  • Move select timeout conversion, socket wait, and rusage timeval handling into host_env.
  • Deny libc poll/select/kqueue/epoll syscalls in vm/stdlib clippy.

Assisted-by: Grok:grok-4.6

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds shared descriptor-wait and CPU-time helpers in host_env. Standard-library socket, timeout, kqueue, and resource code now uses these helpers. Solaris and illumos gain login_tty support. Clippy denies direct low-level polling APIs and types.

Changes

Host abstraction layer

Layer / File(s) Summary
Host wait and time primitives
crates/host_env/src/select.rs, crates/host_env/clippy.toml
The host environment adds shared descriptor waiting, checked timeout conversion, kqueue Timespec support, and conversion tests.
Platform and resource helpers
crates/host_env/src/posix.rs, crates/host_env/src/resource.rs
Solaris and illumos gain login_tty. RUsage exposes checked CPU-time conversions.
Standard-library timeout and kqueue integration
crates/stdlib/src/select.rs, crates/stdlib/src/resource.rs, crates/stdlib/clippy.toml, crates/stdlib/src/lib.rs
Timeout paths use checked deadlines and host conversions. Kqueue uses host types and resolves descriptors inside retry loops. Resource usage uses host CPU-time helpers.
Socket and platform consumers
crates/stdlib/src/socket.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/posix.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/time.rs, crates/vm/clippy.toml, crates/vm/src/lib.rs
Socket readiness uses wait_fd. CPU-time and login_tty integrations use the host APIs. Clippy denies direct low-level polling APIs and types.

P1 Badge Widen tv_sec before multiplying

On 32-bit Unix targets such as the CI-supported i686-unknown-linux-gnu, libc::timeval::tv_sec is an i32, so secs is inferred as i32 here while usecs and this function's return type are i64. Consequently, secs.checked_add(usecs) fails to compile for that target. Cast tv.tv_sec to i64 before calling checked_mul so the new host abstraction remains portable.

Applied. timeval_to_nanos now widens tv_sec/tv_usec through a generic TryInto<i64> helper so 32-bit time_t compiles and ordinary CPU times no longer overflow.

wait_fd_poll still truncates milliseconds instead of using the ceiling helper.

wait_fd_poll computes ms with remaining.as_millis(), which truncates any sub-millisecond remainder. poll_fds can then return 0 up to 1ms before the actual deadline, and the function reports WaitFd::Timeout early.

duration_as_millis_ceiling exists in this same file for exactly this purpose. Reuse it here.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Retry after a saturated Windows timeval timeout.

On Windows, timeval is WinSock::TIMEVAL, whose tv_sec is a 32-bit signed value. A deadline more than i32::MAX seconds away is therefore capped by duration_to_timeval.

When select returns 0, wait_fd_select immediately returns WaitFd::Timeout. The socket caller treats that result as the actual timeout, even though the absolute deadline is still pending. Track whether conversion was capped and retry with freshly initialized FdSet values until the deadline expires.
