1 Formal.
2 Informal.
3 Archaic.
4 Obsolete or literary.
5 Grammatically third person forms used semantically in the second person as a formal or polite way of addressing someone (with the first letter frequently capitalised as a sign of respect, and to distinguish them from third person subjects). Unlike the singular forms, the plural forms are mostly antiquated terms of formal address in the modern language, and second person plural pronouns are almost always used instead.
6 Also used as indefinite pronoun meaning “one”, and to form the passive.
7 Formal (capitalisation optional); in many regions, can refer to just one person (compare with French vous).
8 Traditional grammars still indicate the forms egli (animate), ello / ella (animate), esso / essa and their plurals as the nominative forms of the third person pronouns; outside of very formal or archaizing contexts, all such forms have been replaced by the obliques lui, lei, loro.
9 Forms used when followed by a third-person direct object proclitic (lo, la, li, le, or ne).
10 Used after verbs.
11 Unstressed forms, stand alone forms are found proclitically (except dative loro / Loro), others enclitically (-mi, -ti, etc.).
12 Disjunctive, emphatic oblique forms used as direct objects placed after verbs (or before them, chiefly in literary Italian), in exclamations, along prepositions (prepositional) and some adverbs (come, quanto, etc.); also used with a to create alternative emphatic dative forms.
13 Only in "ci si", replaces indefinite si (“one”) before reflexive si (“oneself”).

Norwegian Bokmål
[edit]Pronunciation
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]| PIE word |
|---|
| *wéy |
Inherited from Middle Norwegian wi (“we”), attested in a Norwegian charter from 1415.[1] NAOB dates the form's appearance in Norwegian to about 1370 and considers it probably introduced from Old Danish wi and Old Swedish vī, vīr, corresponding to Old Norse vér.[2]
On this account, the East Scandinavian forms continue Proto-Germanic *wīz, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *wéy (“we”). Bokmålsordboka more cautiously describes Swedish and Danish influence and also compares the Old Norse dual vit (“we two”), alongside the plural vér.[3]
Compare Danish vi, Swedish vi, Icelandic vér, Gothic 𐍅𐌴𐌹𐍃 (weis), Dutch wij, German wir and English we (“we”).

Usage notes
[edit]- Vi is the subject form. The object form is oss, which is also used reflexively: Vi vasker oss (“We wash ourselves”).
- The possessive forms are vår, vårt and våre.
- In ordinary plural use, vi can include or exclude the person being addressed; the distinction depends on context.
- The pronoun can be followed by a numeral or a noun identifying the group, as in vi to (“the two of us”) and vi lærere (“we teachers”).
- Use directed at another person can express warmth or solidarity, but may also sound patronizing.

[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]From Old Swedish vīr, from Old East Norse *wīʀ (compare vér), from Proto-Germanic *wīz, from Proto-Indo-European *wéy, plural of *éǵh₂.
Pronoun
[edit]vi
- we (first-person personal plural subject pronoun)
- 1791, Carl Michael Bellman, Fredmans sånger, N:o 21
- Så lunka vi så småningom från Bacchi buller och tumult
- We'll walk away eventually from the noise and tumult of Bacchus
- 1974, Lasse Tennander, “Ska vi gå hem till dig [Shall We Go to Your Place ["home to you" – idiomatic]]”, in Allting som ni gör kan jag göra bättre [Anything You Do, I Can Do Better [a cover album]][38], performed by Magnus Uggla:
- Ska vi gå hem till dig eller hem till mig, eller var och en hem till sitt? Ska vi göra som dom andra och ägna oss åt varandra, eller ska var och en sköta sitt?
- Shall we go to your place ["home to you" – idiomatic] or to my place [home to me], or each one ["each and one" – idiomatic] home to theirs [nominalized – neuter gender is used when there is no concrete referent, like in impersonal constructions and here, as a rule of thumb]? Shall we do like the others and spend time on each other [engage in each other as an activity – doesn't have the connotations of "devote"], or shall each one mind [take care of] theirs [nominalized]?
- 1981, X Models, “Två av oss [Two of us]”[39]:
- Det finns bara en av mig och det är jag. Det finns bara en av dig och det är du. Det finns bara två av oss, och det är vi.
- There is only one of me and that is I. There is only one of you [object] and that is you [subject]. There are only two of us, and that is us [we – subject]. [Swedish has some of the same subject/object fuzziness as English, but a standalone "Det är <pronoun>" idiomatically (through intuition rather than being taught) uses the subject form]
- 1791, Carl Michael Bellman, Fredmans sånger, N:o 21
Usage notes
[edit]A standalone "That is us" is idiomatically "Det är vi" rather than "Det är oss." Compare "That is I" in (taught) English, which also uses the subject form. See the quotations above for an example.
