The Department of Education (DepEd) governs all elementary and secondary education institutions, including public and private alternative learning systems. It calls for the establishment and maintenance of a comprehensive, sufficient, and integrated basic education system that is appropriate to national development goals.

The DepEd traces its origins to the Spanish regime, when the Superior Commission of Primary Instruction was formed in 1863 to expand Filipinos’ access to education. However, the government recognizes June 23, 1898, as the department’s foundation day, with the establishment of the Bureau of Education after the country’s independence.

The department is led by the Secretary of Education, who is appointed by the President and confirmed by Congress through the Commission on Appointments.
