VIN decoder
Paste any 17-character VIN: instant validity check in your browser, then the full build sheet - make, model, year, engine, plant - from the official vPIC database, with recalls and fuel economy for the exact model. Free, no account.
Structure checks run on your device. The full decode uses the official database and is never logged.

The 17 characters, explained
Positions 1-3 identify the manufacturer (WMI code), 4-8 describe the vehicle, 9 is a checksum, 10 is the model year, 11 the plant, 12-17 the serial number. Full guide →
Recalls & fuel economy included
Every decode links to the model's page: official NHTSA safety recalls and EPA fuel-economy figures across 26,360 year-make-model combinations.
What we deliberately don't do
No ownership, title or accident history - that is licensed, privacy-sensitive data. We decode what the VIN itself encodes, and we never store the VINs you check.
Free API
One GET request, JSON out, no key: /api/vin/{vin} - decodes are cached so repeated lookups cost nothing. Need more than 100 requests a day? A free IPNOVA API key at api.ipnova.com gives you 30,000 lookups a month and 60 a minute. Get an IPNOVA API key.
Checking a whole list?
The bulk VIN checker validates up to 1,000 VINs at once, entirely in your browser, with CSV export. Nothing is uploaded.
VIN won't validate?
The VIN fixer uses the check digit to repair misread characters - I vs 1, O vs 0, S vs 5 - and suggests the corrected VIN.
European vehicle?
EU VINs decode structurally (manufacturer, country, year), and the EU CO2 layer adds official emissions, fuel mix and registration statistics per model from the European Environment Agency.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about decoding a VIN
How do I decode a VIN for free?
Paste the 17-character VIN. The structure (check digit, model year, manufacturer code) is validated instantly in your browser; the full build sheet (make, model, engine, plant, body) comes from the official US government vPIC database. No account, no charge, no stored VINs.
Is my VIN stored or shared when I decode it?
No. Structural checks run on your device. The full decode is fetched once from the official database, returned to you and never logged against you, we keep no record of who decoded what.
Does this show accident or ownership history?
No, by design. Title, accident and ownership records are licensed, privacy-sensitive data sold by history-report companies. This decoder covers what the VIN itself encodes, the vehicle's build facts, plus official safety recalls and fuel economy for the model.
Why does my VIN fail the check digit?
The 9th character is a checksum over the other 16. A failure usually means a typo, the letters I, O and Q never appear in a VIN and are often misread as 1 or 0. Note that some non-North-American VINs legitimately do not use the check digit.
