Contract Notes
On June 11, 2026, the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes agreed to a new contract. The contract is 8 years in length with 2 new years added. We are valuing the contract at $64 million APY. Preliminary contract details courtesy of Albert Breer of SI. Mahomes has $182.8 million guaranteed for injury with $95.5 million fully guaranteed at signing. Mahomes\'s money does not change for 2026. Starting in 2027, Mahomes has yearly $30 million roster bonuses due to be earned on May 5th of each year, along with a $1 million offseason workout bonus. Mahomes\'s salary and bonuses for 2027 are effectively guaranteed with a portion of 2028 effectively guaranteed after signing. Starting in March of 2028, on the third day of each league year, the following year\'s roster bonus becomes guaranteed (a year early) with the base salary and workout bonuses becoming guaranteed in March of the same year. For example, in March 2028, the 2029 Roster Bonus becomes guaranteed along with the 2028 base salary and workout bonus. In March 2029, the 2030 Roster bonus becomes guaranteed, along with the remaining 2029 base salary and workout bonus. The same actions occur in 2031 and 2032. For 2033, the Roster Bonus, base salary, and workout bonus all vest to full guarantees in the same 2033 year, all on the first day of the league year. Mahomes can earn an additional $17.5 million via incentives for 2027 through 2033. $1.25 million for each Super Bowl win (with 50% playtime) and $1.25 million AP MVP for reaching the AFC Championship. Mahomes also has a no trade clause as part of the contract. Previous Contract: Patrick Mahomes signed a 10 year, $450 million contract extension with the Chiefs on July 6, 2020. The contract has $63.0819 million fully guaranteed at signing including a $10 million signing bonus. $141 million is guaranteed for injury and a total of $477.631 million can become guaranteed based on roster status. The guarantee structure is as follows. Upon signing Mahomes\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\' 2020, 2021, and 2022 salaries are all guaranteed. On the 3rd day of the 2021 league year Mahomes\\\' 2023 salary and bonuses will become fully guaranteed. On the 3rd day of the 2022 league year all of Mahomes 2024 compensation will become fully guaranteed. On the 3rd day of the 2023 league year Mahomes $38.9 million 2025 roster bonus will become guaranteed. On the 3rd day of the 2o24 league year the rest of Mahomes\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\' 2025 salary will become guaranteed. On the 3rd day of the 2025 league year Mahomes $38.9 million 2026 roster bonus will be fully guaranteed. On the 3rd day of the 2026 league year the rest of Mahomes 2026 salary and his $49.4 million 2027 roster bonus become guaranteed. On the 3rd day of the 2027 league year the rest of Mahomes\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\' 2027 salary and his entire 2028 salary and bonuses will become fully guaranteed. On the 3rd day of the 2028 league year Mahomes salary and bonuses in 2029 are guaranteed. On the 3rd day of the 2029 league year Mahomes\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\' 2030 salary and bonuses are guaranteed. On the 3rd day of the 2030 league year Mahomes $13.9 million 2031 roster bonus is guaranteed. Finally on the 3rd day of the 2031 league year the rest of his salary is guaranteed. The Chiefs converted Mahomes\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\' $21.716 million roster bonus into a signing bonus on March 11, 2021. The move created $17.374 million in cap space for the Chiefs in 2021. Mahomes\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\' cap number will increase by $4.343 million in each of the next four years of the contract. Mahomes signed a revised contract in September of 2023 that moved cash forward from later years, effectively giving him a raise of $48.3 million from 2023-26. The reworked deal also added two void years in 2032 and 2033 and changed his incentives to escalators to help create roughly $2.5 million in 2023 cap space. Mahomes converted a $47.745 million in salary to a bonus for cap purposes in 2025. The move lowered Mahomes\\\\\\\' 2025 salary cap number by $38.196 million and increased his future cap numbers by $9.549 million in each season from 2026 through 2029. In 2026, Mahomes converted $54.45 million of salary to a bonus for salary cap purposes. The move opened up $43.56 million in cap room for the Chiefs. His cap number in future years will increase by $10.89 million per year.
