Python is a general-purpose, interpreted programming language created by Guido van Rossum and first released in 1991, known for its readable syntax and its large standard library. It is open source, free for commercial use, and among the most widely used languages for automation, web back ends, data analysis and machine learning.
This page is the index of every Python tutorial on HowToDoInJava. A short overview of the language and a learning path for beginners come first, followed by all articles grouped by topic, from basics and data types to files, JSON and libraries.
1. Why Learn Python
A few properties explain why Python is often the first language people learn and the one teams reach for when they need results fast.
1.1. Python is Interpreted
Compiled languages such as C translate source code into machine code before it runs. Python compiles source code to bytecode on the fly and runs it in the interpreter, so we write a file and run it with python app.py without a separate build step. The interactive prompt runs single statements, which makes experiments cheap.
1.2. Python is Simple and Readable
Python code is short and close to plain English. Python 3.14 has 35 keywords, compared with about 50 in Java and more than 80 in C++, and the Python keywords tutorial lists them all.
- A new line ends a statement, so Python needs no semicolons.
- Indentation defines blocks such as loops, functions and classes, where other languages use curly braces.
- Variables need no type declarations, because the type belongs to the value.
def greet(names):
for name in names:
if name:
print(f"Hello, {name}!")
greet(["Alex", "", "Sam"])
Hello, Alex!
Hello, Sam!
1.3. Uses of Python
Python covers most kinds of software, either with the standard library or with third-party packages from PyPI.
- Scripting and automation of files, reports and system tasks.
- Web back ends and APIs with Django, Flask and FastAPI.
- Data analysis and visualization with pandas and NumPy.
- Machine learning and AI with libraries such as scikit-learn and PyTorch.
- Web scraping and testing with tools such as Beautiful Soup and pytest.
