Follow-up to #8807 / #8810. Native callables now get text signatures generated at compile time. This PR fixes their names, kinds and defaults so inspect.signature matches CPython 3.14.

Defaults (Render CPython defaults in generated text signatures)

  • OptionalArg<T> + unwrap_or(x) is replaced by literal #[pyarg(default = x)] where the Rust type can hold the Python default. The generated signature then shows the real default instead of <unrepresentable>.
  • py_default = "..." is kept only where a literal of the field type is impossible: ArgBytesLike shown as b'', values that need vm, ArgIntoBool, enums, and Option<T> whose None means a non-None Python default. Each one has a short comment.
  • Shared argument structs (bytes/bytearray, str/bytes split, _io, _codecs, _hashlib, …) are fixed once.

Typed defaults (Derive signature defaults from typed Rust values)

  • Param.default is now a DefaultRepr (None/Bool/Int/Float/Str/Bytes/Raw). The const writer renders it at compile time.
  • Literals, integer constants (isize::MAX, DEF_BUF_SIZE), and bool paths become typed defaults automatically.
  • Any other default expression is evaluated as a const and rendered through the type's inherent const fn py_default(). Each type defines this once: ArgByteOrder → 'big', ArgIntoBool → False, ArgPrimitiveIndex → int, TimeoutSeconds.
  • A bare #[pyarg(optional)] now renders =None, so fields no longer need rewriting to default = None.
  • py_default remains only for non-const values or OptionalArgs whose non-None default is filled in the body.

Names and kinds (Match native callable signatures to CPython names and kinds)

  • Parameters are renamed to CPython's names.
  • Positional-only and keyword-only kinds are adjusted. Plain parameters move into FromArgs structs where CPython accepts keywords, and named is used where CPython is keyword-only.
  • Hand-parsed FuncArgs are converted where the behavior stays the same.
  • property.__set_name__ gets a manual FromArgs that keeps its custom arity error while exposing ($self, owner, name, /).
  • expectedFailure markers are removed from tests that now pass (test_pydoc, test_codecs).

#[pyarg] default rules (later commits)

  • OptionalArg vs Option. Choose by whether a missing argument and None behave the same.
    • They behave the same → Option<T> + optional, which renders =None.
    • They differ → keep OptionalArg/OptionalOption, which renders <unrepresentable>. Examples: reduce initial, StringIO newline, TextIOWrapper.reconfigure, set_asyncgen_hooks.
    • pyexpat.ParserCreate(intern=None) now disables interning instead of creating a dict.
  • default = ::NAME writes the constant's name into the signature, e.g. level=Z_DEFAULT_COMPRESSION and format=FORMAT_AUTO. inspect resolves the name from the module. The Rust value is Into::into(NAME). Named constants that an earlier commit had turned into literals are restored: zlib, lzma, mmap, select, syslog.
  • Literal defaults. A literal on an object-typed field is built through ToPyObject/TryFromObject, e.g. default = "main" on a PyStrRef. This drops the vm.ctx.new_str("main") + py_default = "'main'" pairs.
  • Bare default on a primitive renders its zero value (0, False).
  • <unrepresentable> is DefaultRepr::Unrepresentable. It comes only from OptionalArg or a bare default. Writing py_default = "<unrepresentable>" is a compile error.
  • Parameter names.
    • A parameter written as Fildes(fd): Fildes is named fd.
    • Fields are renamed to their Python names instead of using name = "...". name = stays only for keywords (fn, loop, final, type, self) and memLevel.

Compile-time docstrings

  • rustpython-doc stores its table as a sorted const slice with const-fn lookups instead of a phf map. The update-doc-db workflow emits that form.
  • The derive output picks class, method, getset, module-function, struct-sequence and slot-wrapper docs by const lookup, and the DB text wins over Rust ///. Macros reach the table through rustpython_vm::__exports.
  • whats_left --doc mismatches drop from 1494 to 641. The release binary is 37.9 MB.

whats_left --signature (native + Python-implemented)

before after
invalid (RustPython) 249 0
defaults differ 9 8
names/arity differ 371 155
kinds differ 201 131

Native entries that CPython can produce a signature for now all match. A signature CPython cannot produce (its inspect.signature raises) counts as a match, since having one is fine.

The remaining counts are Python-implemented callables. Class constructors get their signatures from Initializer/Constructor args, and struct sequences get (iterable=(), /).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements

    • Python-visible argument names, keyword support, and displayed defaults are more consistent across standard-library functions and built-ins, including io, math, pickle, ssl, and zlib.
    • Generated signatures now show Python-compatible defaults and constructor signatures for classes.
  • Behavior Changes

    • marshal serialization defaults to protocol 5, and checksum functions can be called without an initial value.
    • os.link accepts source and destination directory descriptors.
    • DirEntry.stat no longer accepts dir_fd; set and frozenset symmetric_difference methods now accept one iterable.
  • New Features

    • Added os.fstatvfs on Unix systems.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This pull request updates argument parsing and Python-visible signatures across derive support, VM built-ins, and standard-library APIs. It adds typed default rendering, changes argument declarations and names, and updates generated method documentation.

Changes

Python argument parsing and signatures

Layer / File(s) Summary
Signature default generation and rendering
crates/derive-impl/src/from_args.rs, crates/derive-impl/src/pyclass.rs, crates/derive-impl/src/pymodule.rs, crates/derive/src/lib.rs, crates/vm/src/function/*, crates/vm/src/class.rs, crates/vm/src/types/structseq.rs
The derive macro distinguishes optional parsing from declared defaults and generates typed DefaultRepr values. Signature rendering formats these values. Class metadata now selects and emits constructor signatures. Generated methods pair each Python-visible name with its documentation.
VM built-in argument parsing
crates/vm/src/anystr.rs, crates/vm/src/builtins/*, crates/vm/src/bytes_inner.rs, crates/vm/src/sequence.rs, crates/vm/src/types/structseq.rs
Built-ins adopt argument structures and optional values for operations including byte and string handling, collection methods, indexing, and replacement. Some parameter bindings and call signatures also change.
Standard-library and platform APIs
crates/stdlib/src/*, crates/vm/src/stdlib/*, crates/wasm/src/ssl.rs, crates/host_env/src/*, scripts/whats_left.py
Standard-library functions use typed parsers and updated defaults or argument bindings. The changes include I/O, codecs, POSIX, SSL, async, and other APIs. os.link accepts directory descriptors on Unix, and fstatvfs is added.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~90 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f8e71

Previously reported signature mismatches remain open in the supplied record. Confirm their current status before treating this change as ready to merge.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3d2cc

The reviewed changes affect many callable interfaces, but no introduced security issue was established. The breadth of the change leaves some uncertainty about less-examined APIs.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The relevant exposure is Python callers of affected native callables, including shared built-in parsers; the reviewed paths do not establish a new privileged authority or cross-service trust boundary.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Python-supplied values pass through typed conversion and argument binding. For the reviewed bytearray mutation, resizability and index checks precede removal; replacement constructs a returned value rather than mutating that receiver.

🟡 Minor · Give sys._getframe a positional-only depth parser. · sys.rs:781-782

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Give sys._getframe a positional-only depth parser.

GetFrameArgs marks depth as any and serves both frame functions. CPython 3.14 accepts a depth keyword for sys._getframemodulename, but requires positional-only depth for sys._getframe. Consequently, sys._getframe(depth=0) is accepted when it should raise TypeError. Use separate argument structures so each function has the correct parameter kind. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Normalize float literals to float.__repr__ text.

float_literal_text passes the source digits through unchanged. The rendered default then keeps the source spelling, not the Python repr:

  • #[pyarg(named, default = 0.250)] sleep: f64 in crates/stdlib/src/_sqlite3.rs renders sleep=0.250. CPython renders sleep=0.25.
  • A literal 1e-9 renders 1e-9. CPython renders 1e-09.

This PR's goal is to match CPython defaults. Parse the literal at macro time and format it with Rust's shortest round-trip formatter. Then adjust the exponent to Python's form.

Render stop as sys.maxsize.

isize::MAX goes through the primitive-integer path in value_default_repr. The signature then shows stop=9223372036854775807 on 64-bit targets and stop=2147483647 on 32-bit or wasm targets. CPython's memoryview.index signature shows stop=sys.maxsize. Add an explicit py_default so the text is correct and the same on every target.

Arguments whose default rendered as `<unrepresentable>`, while the
same callable has a representable default in CPython, now render that
default:

- Where the Rust value can be a literal, the argument becomes a plain
  field with `default = <literal>`.
- The remaining cases keep their Rust default and add `py_default`
with a comment. These are wrappers such as ArgIntoFloat or
ArgIntoBool, values that need the VM, enums, and Option where None
  means another value.

Byte string literals render as Python bytes. A function registered
under several names gets an internal doc per name, so its __doc__ no
longer carries the signature header.

Removed expectedFailure from test_pydoc tests that now pass.

Rename parameters and adjust positional-only / keyword-only kinds and
defaults of native functions and methods so their generated text
signatures match CPython. Remove expectedFailure markers from tests
that now pass.

Param.default is now a DefaultRepr rendered by the const writer.
Literals, integer and bool constants become typed defaults, and other
default expressions use the type's const fn py_default. A bare
`optional` renders as None, so `default = None` rewrites are reverted.

Address review comments: zlib max_length defaults, get_ca_certs
binary_form keyword, getpeercert der, WASM ssl certificate keywords,
fstatvfs fd-only, and _sre endpos shown as sys.maxsize.

A #[pyclass] impl composes the type's internal doc from the Args of
its Initializer or Constructor, so type.__text_signature__ and
inspect.signature work for native classes. __doc__ stays the plain
doc. Struct sequences get (iterable=(), /) and __reduce__ (self, /).
Hand-parsed constructors are converted to FromArgs structs, and
_weakref.proxy is split from ProxyType.

…s as matches

Give lock.__enter__ and RLock.__enter__ their own no-argument methods,
add FromArgs for start_new_thread and start_joinable_thread keeping
their errors, take RTLD_GLOBAL/RTLD_LOCAL from libc, and align names,
kinds and <unrepresentable> defaults where CPython's signature is
invalid (bytes.hex, reduce, warn, link, setlocale, add_done_callback,
...). getaddrinfo accepts keyword arguments. whats_left treats a
callable CPython has no signature for as matching.

Assisted-by: Claude:claude-opus-5-5
Assisted-by: Grok:grok-4.7
An `optional` field's signature default now comes from its type:
Option<T> renders None, while OptionalArg<T> (a missing argument that
is not any Python value) renders <unrepresentable>. Fields where a
missing argument behaves exactly like None become Option<T>; fields
whose missing state differs keep OptionalArg. Redundant
py_default = "<unrepresentable>" entries are removed.

Assisted-by: Claude:claude-opus-5-5
Assisted-by: Grok:grok-4.7
OptionalOption and OptionalArg<Option<T>> fields that treat a missing
argument like None become Option<T> with #[pyarg(optional)], which renders
=None in the text signature. Plain optional parameters of that kind move
into small FromArgs structs. Uses where missing and None differ (reduce
initial, StringIO newline, TextIOWrapper.reconfigure, set_asyncgen_hooks)
keep OptionalOption.

- default = ::NAME writes NAME into the text signature and stores
  Into::into(NAME) as the Rust value.
- A one-field tuple-struct argument pattern such as Fildes(fd) names the
parameter after its binding, so fcntl and termios keep destructuring.
- zlib, lzma, syslog, mmap and select defaults use their named constants
again instead of literals or <unrepresentable>.

Assisted-by: Claude:claude-opus-5-5
Assisted-by: Grok:grok-4.7
Drop #[pyarg(name = ...)] where the Python name is a valid Rust field name
and rename the field instead. The option stays only for keywords (fn, loop,
final, type, self) and the non-snake_case memLevel.

Assisted-by: Claude:claude-opus-5-5
Assisted-by: Grok:grok-4.7
- default = LIT on a non-primitive field converts the literal through
ToPyObject and TryFromObject when the argument is missing, so object
fields no longer need a vm expression plus a matching py_default.
- A bare default on a primitive integer, bool or float field renders its
  zero value.
- DefaultRepr::Unrepresentable replaces the <unrepresentable> text, and
  py_default = "<unrepresentable>" is a compile error.
- pyexpat.ParserCreate distinguishes a missing intern from intern=None,
mmap AccessMode renders its value, and sqlite blobopen names rowid.

Assisted-by: Claude:claude-opus-5-5
Assisted-by: Grok:grok-4.7
- rustpython-doc stores its table as a sorted const slice with const fn
lookups (get, get_attr, class_attr_doc) instead of a phf map, and the
  update-doc-db workflow emits that form.
- Class, method, getset, module function and struct sequence docs, and
per-class slot wrapper docs, are chosen by const lookups in the derive
output. The database text wins over Rust doc comments.
- Macros reach the table through rustpython_vm::__exports, so only the vm
  depends on rustpython-doc.
- Remove expectedFailure markers from doctest and pydoc tests that pass.

Assisted-by: Claude:claude-opus-5-5
Assisted-by: Grok:grok-4.7
Their [seconds] parameter has no text signature, and unittest.mock relies
on inspect.signature failing for them. Take OptionalOption again so the
default stays unrepresentable, and treat None like a missing argument.
