Summary

  • FromArgs has a new PARAMS const that describes its Python parameters. The derive builds the whole internal doc (name(sig)\n--\n\ndoc) in a const context from those params. __text_signature__ and __doc__ parse that doc. The macro-time string path is removed, so signatures have one source.
  • Signatures follow Argument Clinic conventions:
    • Module functions get a $module marker.
    • Rust literal defaults, and the path None, are rendered as Python reprs.
    • Other defaults are rendered as <unrepresentable>.
  • New #[pyarg(py_default = "...")] for fields whose Rust default has to differ from the Python-visible one. It is used only by print sep/end/flush and int.to_bytes byteorder. The #[pyarg] keys, including when to use default and when to use py_default, are now documented on the FromArgs derive.
  • Module functions store their module object and return it from __self__. It is not passed as a call argument. PyNativeFunction now traverses its references.
  • Argument definitions changed to match their signatures:
    • os.stat: path is positional-or-keyword.
    • os.open: mode is default = 0o777 of type i32, so None is rejected.
    • Also changed: os.mkdir, os.listdir, dict.fromkeys, round, sorted, int.to_bytes, bytes.hex.
  • Removed expectedFailure from test_inspect.test_getfullargspec_builtin_methods and test_pydoc.test_module_level_callable, which now pass.

__text_signature__ now matches CPython 3.14 for os.stat/open/listdir/mkdir/getcwd/getpid, len, print, round, sorted, str.join, dict.fromkeys, dict.pop, object.__init__, int.to_bytes, bytes.hex, and list.sort.

Known differences:

  • getattr and str.find: CPython writes optional groups as [...], or gives no signature at all.
  • anext and str.maketrans: parameter names differ.

Test plan

  • cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets ... -- -D warnings and crates/capi clippy
  • cargo test --workspace ... and (cd crates/capi && cargo test)
  • cargo run --release -- -m test test_inspect test_pydoc test_builtin test_os test_types test_sys test_csv test_posix test_dict test_bytes test_long test_list test_print test_gc: all 14 OK

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Function and method documentation now displays Python-compatible signatures with parameter names, kinds, and defaults.
    • Native module functions expose their owning module through __self__.
    • Argument parsing supports explicit Python-facing defaults for displayed signatures.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Corrected default argument handling for dict.fromkeys, integer conversion, byte formatting, and several operating-system functions.
    • Invalid argument attributes now report errors instead of being silently ignored.
  • Documentation

    • Added usage guidance and examples for the FromArgs derive macro.

FromArgs gains a PARAMS const describing its Python parameters.
The derive builds the whole internal doc, `name(sig)\n--\n\ndoc`,
in a const context from those params, and `__text_signature__` /
`__doc__` parse it from the doc. The macro-time string path and the
runtime sig_parts composition are removed.

Signatures follow clinic conventions: `$module` for module functions,
Rust literal defaults rendered as Python reprs, other defaults as
`<unrepresentable>`, and a new `#[pyarg(py_default = "...")]` for the
few fields whose Rust default differs from the Python one. The
`#[pyarg]` keys are documented on the FromArgs derive.

Module functions keep their module object and return it from
`__self__`. PyNativeFunction now traverses its references.

os.stat, os.mkdir, os.listdir, os.open, dict.fromkeys, round, sorted,
int.to_bytes and bytes.hex take arguments matching their signatures.

CodeRabbit blocks several paths by default. You can override this behavior by explicitly including those paths in the path filters. For example, including **/dist/** will override the default block on the dist directory, by removing the pattern from both the lists.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes add native-function parameter metadata and signature documentation. Builtins and OS functions declare argument defaults through argument structures. Module methods retain their owning module object.

Changes

Native signatures and argument handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Signature metadata and rendering
crates/vm/src/function/{argument.rs,mod.rs,signature.rs}, crates/vm/src/builtins/descriptor.rs
The VM adds parameter metadata and FromArgs::PARAMS. Signature rendering writes internal documentation, and method descriptors return extracted signatures as static strings.
Derive-generated signature documentation
crates/derive-impl/Cargo.toml, crates/derive-impl/src/{from_args.rs,util.rs,pyclass.rs,pymodule.rs}, crates/derive/src/lib.rs, .cspell.dict/rust-more.txt
The derive implementation parses py_default, builds parameter metadata, and generates internal documentation tokens. Rustdoc describes argument kinds and signature defaults.
Builtin and OS argument declarations
crates/vm/src/builtins/{dict.rs,int.rs,list.rs}, crates/vm/src/bytes_inner.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/{builtins.rs,os.rs}
Argument structures declare defaults for builtins and OS functions. OS stat operations use the shared stat_at helper.
Owning module on native functions
crates/vm/src/builtins/{builtin_func.rs,module.rs}, crates/vm/src/function/method.rs
PyNativeFunction stores an optional module object. Module methods receive their owning module, and __self__ returns it when no bound receiver is present.
Signature behavior checks
extra_tests/snippets/builtin_signature.py
The test checks the __text_signature__ and inspect.signature() results for round and sum.

Some native signatures remain inaccurate, and int.to_bytes may reject signed values it previously accepted. These are bounded compatibility risks to address or explicitly accept before merging.

Render negative literal defaults instead of <unrepresentable>.

default = -1 parses as Expr::Unary, which reaches the fallback arm and emits <unrepresentable> instead of -1. The derive documentation states that this causes inspect.signature to raise ValueError. Handle negated integer and float literals, and unwrap parentheses and groups.

Keep truthiness conversion for signed.

ArgIntoBool applies Python truthiness, but plain bool accepts only int objects. This makes to_bytes(..., signed=[1]) and signed=None raise TypeError, while from_bytes still accepts them. Preserve the previous conversion.

🐛 Proposed fix
-        let signed = args.signed;
+        let signed = args.signed.into_bool();
...
-    #[pyarg(named, default = false)]

+ // ArgIntoBool::FALSE is not the literal false.
+    #[pyarg(named, default = ArgIntoBool::FALSE, py_default = "False")]
+    signed: ArgIntoBool,

Return the module object from get_self.

PyCFunction_GET_SELF must return the module object for functions created from a PyModuleDef. Module methods store that object in module_object, while zelf remains unset for argument binding. The current helper therefore returns None for module methods.

Suggested fix
-        self.zelf.as_deref()
+        self.zelf
+            .as_deref()
+            .or(self.module_object.as_deref())

Keep callable argument binding based on zelf only.

Give fstat its own argument signature.

The fstat registration reuses stat(args: StatArgs). The new signature generator therefore advertises path, dir_fd, and follow_symlinks for os.fstat. Python documents os.fstat(fd) instead. This gives inspect.signature(os.fstat) an incorrect public contract. Register an fd-only wrapper and delegate its operation to stat_at. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

…stat (#8810)

* address review: negative defaults, to_bytes signed, get_self, fstat

- python_default_repr renders negated int/float literals and looks
  through parentheses and groups.
- int.to_bytes signed is ArgIntoBool again, so any object is accepted
  by truthiness; its signature default stays False via py_default.
- PyNativeFunction::get_self falls back to the module object.
- os.fstat has its own FromArgs with a single fd parameter instead of
  reusing stat's arguments.

Assisted-by: Claude:claude-opus-5-5

* address review: literal default rendering and fstat supports sets

- Literal defaults are rendered by python_literal_repr, which recurses
  through negation, parentheses and groups, so `-(1)` renders `-1`.
- Float literals without a dot or exponent, such as `1f64`, render
  with a trailing `.0`.
- os.fstat is removed from supports_fd, supports_dir_fd and
  supports_follow_symlinks.

* Order chmod's arguments the way CPython declares them

posix.chmod took dir_fd between path and mode. Since #8807 renders
each argument's parameter kind, that put `/` after `*`, which inspect
cannot parse, and path and mode stayed positional-only, so
os.chmod(path=..., mode=...) raised TypeError.

A ChmodArgs struct follows CPython's order, as nt.chmod already does.
path and mode are positional-or-keyword. follow_symlinks shows
CPython's text through py_default, like LinkArgs.

Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5

* Reject a text signature that puts `/` after `*` or `**`

The writer counts positional-only parameters up front and emits `/`
when they run out, which assumes they come first in the Rust argument
list. Nothing enforced that, and posix.chmod violated it. The
signature is composed in a const context, so the assert fails the
build and names the fix.
