Summary

CI rust tests on ubuntu hang in stop_the_world_parks_threads_of_another_interpreter (seen on #8774, which only bumps actionlint). The job is cancelled after the test has been running for minutes.

STOP_BIT lives in the process-wide eval-breaker word. Each interpreter's start_the_world clears that bit. eval_breaker_tripped then only looked at the global word, so a worker whose stop_requested was still set never entered check_signals and never parked. stop_the_world waited forever. Parallel cargo tests make this easy to hit: one test starts the world and clears the bit while another is still stopping.

The bytecode loop now checks the per-thread stop_requested flag first. A regression test flickers STOP_BIT while a subinterpreter is stopped.

Assisted-by: Grok:4.6

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved execution coordination for threaded workloads, ensuring paused interpreter activity remains paused even when other threads update shared runtime signals.
    • Corrected resumption behavior so execution reliably continues after a stop-the-world pause is released.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for concurrent stop, resume, and signal-update scenarios, including safeguards that detect stalled execution instead of leaving the test suite hanging.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The bytecode-loop stop check now includes the current thread's stop request. A regression test verifies that a stopped subinterpreter worker remains parked while another thread changes the global stop bit.

Changes

Per-thread stop enforcement

Layer / File(s) Summary
Per-thread stop check
crates/vm/src/vm/mod.rs
eval_breaker_tripped checks the current thread's stop request before loading the process-wide breaker state. The start_the_world comment describes the updated behavior.
Stop-bit regression test
crates/vm/src/vm/interpreter.rs
A threaded test verifies that a stopped subinterpreter worker does not advance while another thread repeatedly sets and clears the global stop bit. The worker resumes after start_the_world.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4f235

The runtime fix addresses thread parking, but the regression test may not reliably exercise the stop-bit race, leaving a bounded concurrency-coverage gap before merge.

Synchronize the flicker with the stop request.

The flicker thread has no acknowledgement. If it performs only a cycle before stop_the_world sets stop_requested, a regression that relies only on STOP_BIT can park the worker and let the test pass without exercising a clear after the request.

Add a test-only handshake at the request site. After the worker's stop_requested flag is set, require the flicker to perform and acknowledge a set_stop_bit/clear_stop_bit cycle before the stop sequence continues. Do not place the wait after the blocking stop_the_world call.

Bound the blocking test operations.

stop_the_world can block indefinitely at line 1789 when the regression occurs. The initial and resumed-progress loops can also wait indefinitely. Run the stop operation in a helper thread with recv_timeout, and use deadlines for both progress waits. Release the world before asserting, then stop and join the flicker and worker threads so a failure does not strand cleanup.

The eval-breaker / STOP_BIT fix is already on main via #8778 (f56bfc9a5), including eval_breaker_tripped checking per-thread stop_requested and the flicker regression test. This PR is now a duplicate and conflicts.

Closing in favor of main.
