  • Closes #xxxx
  • I did not use AI to write the code of this patch.
  • This PR follows our AI policy

Summary

Follow-up after #8759.

  • Register interactive <stdin> source with linecache._register_code so REPL tracebacks include the source line and caret (~^~).
  • Build StopIteration with empty args when the value is None, and wrap monitoring STOP_ITERATION the same way, so pdb prints Internal StopIteration rather than Internal StopIteration: None.
  • Count Unknown }/]/) in tokenize EOF bracket matching so f-string interpolations like {$a} do not raise TokenError.
  • Check per-thread stop_requested in eval_breaker_tripped so stop_the_world still parks workers when another interpreter clears the process-wide STOP_BIT.
  • Start socket timeouts after the fd snapshot, and poll once with timeout 0 when the deadline has already passed, so a readable socket is not dropped as timed out (macOS CGI test_large_content_length_truncated ConnectionResetError).

Unskip REPL stderr flush tests, pdb Flaky doctests, and test_pdb.PdbTestCase.test_zipimport.

Test plan

Linux apple-container, release:

  • test_cmd_line_script REPL stdout/stderr flush (4 tests)
  • test_pdb (210 run / 1 skipped / SUCCESS)

Host macOS, release:

  • stop_the_world_parks_when_global_stop_bit_is_cleared and stop_the_world_parks_threads_of_another_interpreter

  • wait_fd expired-deadline tests

  • test_httpservers CGI truncated Content-Length (5 repeats) and full test_httpservers

  • CI

Assisted-by: Grok:4.6

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved StopIteration handling by avoiding unnecessary constructor execution and preventing unrelated call errors.
    • StopIteration messages no longer display None when no meaningful value is provided.
    • Shell-executed code is registered before running, improving source context in error reporting.
    • Improved detection of unclosed brackets inside f-string interpolations.
    • Socket timeouts now begin after initial setup, improving timing accuracy.
    • Expired I/O waits still detect descriptors that are immediately ready.
    • Improved interpreter coordination when pausing and resuming execution.

Register interactive <stdin> source in linecache so REPL
tracebacks include the source line and caret. Build
StopIteration with empty args when the value is None, and
wrap monitoring STOP_ITERATION the same way.

Unskip REPL stderr flush tests and pdb Flaky doctests.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change updates StopIteration construction, shell line-cache registration, tokenizer bracket tracking, expired-descriptor handling, socket deadline initialization, and stop-the-world coordination.

Changes

Runtime updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
StopIteration construction
crates/vm/src/vm/vm_new.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/sys/monitoring.rs
new_stop_iteration treats None as an omitted value. fire_stop_iteration uses the helper directly for wrapped exceptions.
Shell line-cache registration
crates/vm/src/vm/python_run.rs, src/shell.rs
register_code_in_linecache is public and accepts &Py<PyCode>. Successful shell compilation registers the code and source before execution or continuation.
Tokenizer bracket tracking
crates/stdlib/src/_tokenize.rs
Unknown tokens containing bracket characters now update bracket depth during unclosed-bracket detection.

Deadline handling updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Expired descriptor checks
crates/host_env/src/select.rs
Expired deadlines perform zero-time readiness checks. Unix tests cover readable and non-readable pipes.
Socket deadline initialization
crates/stdlib/src/socket.rs
Socket timeout deadlines are created after the first socket snapshot inside the wait loop.

Interpreter coordination

Layer / File(s) Summary
Per-thread stop requests
crates/vm/src/vm/mod.rs
The interpreter checks the current thread's stop request before the process-wide eval-breaker condition. The stop-the-world comment describes the shared stop hint.
Stop-the-world validation
crates/vm/src/vm/interpreter.rs
A test verifies that a worker parks while the global stop bit is flickered and resumes after start_the_world.

Preserve the sendall total timeout.

sendall computes a remaining duration from its absolute deadline before calling sock_op_timeout_err. If sock_snapshot() is delayed, this code starts a new Deadline with that stale duration. The final write can then complete after the sendall deadline, and the caller returns success without rechecking its outer deadline.

Keep the caller-provided absolute deadline, or recheck the outer deadline before returning success.

Make the regression condition deterministic.

The flicker thread can set STOP_BIT while the worker's stop_requested flag is set, then clear it. The old eval_breaker_tripped() can observe that transient process-wide bit, enter check_signals(), and park successfully. The test can therefore pass without the per-thread check.

Add a focused test that sets the current thread's stop_requested flag while STOP_BIT is clear, then asserts that eval_breaker_tripped() returns true.
