Romain Dillet a partagé ceciA few weeks ago, Tanguy Goretti replied to my newsletter and asked me to come to Brussels for an AI conference that didn't exist yet. 11 minutes later, I told him I'm in. That conference became Off the Radar, an invitation-only event with 450 guests and speakers from OpenAI, Anthropic, ElevenLabs, Vercel, Stripe, Cloudflare, Gradium, Fundamental, Linkup, etc. But the best part is that those speakers were here to share demos and talk about the technical problems they're facing every day. In other words: a tech conference. I had the pleasure to interview Lélio Renard Lavaud, the VP of Engineering at Mistral who has seen it all over the past three years. What they're building is incredible, tackling several hard problems at once. I challenged him a bit with some hard questions and I think it led to a genuinely interesting conversation. Can't wait for the next one. In the meantime, subscribe to my newsletter ➡️ go to hypertext.fyi (Hypertext is sponsored by Box)

Romain Dillet a partagé ceciThe Fable debacle made one thing clear: relying on a single AI model or provider is becoming a geopolitical risk. In my latest Hypertext piece, I look at why open-weight models, multi-provider architectures and the emerging “AI multiverse” suddenly matter a lot more. And there’s an irony: while Europe softens parts of the AI Act, the US is starting to design its own safeguards for the most capable models. What about you, have you changed your AI model APIs in your product to rely less on a single provider? Did you try Claude Code alternatives for coding? Hypertext is sponsored by Box.

Romain Dillet a partagé ceciBox just published its State of AI in the Enterprise report and is also sponsoring my newsletter, Hypertext. This report is interesting because I recently spent some time researching data on the same topic (enterprise AI adoption) for a piece I wrote. From my notes: McKinsey says 88% of organizations use AI in at least one function and 62% are experimenting with agents. But only around one-third have begun scaling AI across the enterprise. A Harvard Business Review survey highlights an even sharper tension: 86% of respondents plan to increase agentic AI investment within two years, yet only 6% fully trust agents to autonomously manage critical processes end to end. Box’s findings tell a similar story. While 83% of surveyed organizations are running agents, only 19% operate them autonomously at scale. And while 96% say agents need company-specific content, only 36% have connected them to trusted content across many use cases. Deploying an impressive agent demo is easy. Letting that agent reliably act on contracts, invoices, employee records, and other sensitive content is much harder. I think this gap will resorb over time and we’re in the middle of this AI transition. Building the right infrastructure around agents will take time. And I’m curious to see what these large AI-native companies will look like on the other side. More details: https://lnkd.in/eMdpAsW6

Romain Dillet a partagé ceciEvery technological wave eventually attracts people who want to build something. And people who want to get rich quickly. I watched it happen with crypto. What started as a movement of techno-anarchists, idealists and libertarians gradually became crowded with gurus, scammers and crypto influencers. Lately, I've started seeing some of the same patterns emerge in AI. The latest example is Polsia, a startup that promises to help anyone launch an autonomous AI company that makes money while they sleep. The pitch is seductive. The economics are… interesting. Romain Dillet a partagé ceciBox has once again been named a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Document Management and it is also sponsoring my newsletter, Hypertext. My read: Box is a SaaS company whose long-running bet on content management as core enterprise infrastructure is becoming more relevant in the AI era. That positioning makes sense. Box has long focused on the work that happens around documents. It’s not just a document repository. In 2026, that approach feels suddenly more important. Companies are not just adding AI tools on top of existing systems. They are revisiting workflows themselves and asking where AI can actually change how work gets done. This is where Box’s argument gets sharper in my view: if companies want AI agents to work on contracts, invoices, employee records, product specs, and other sensitive business content, those systems need to understand permissions, governance, metadata, and workflows from the start. In other words, content management is infrastructure, and the market is catching up to that idea. More details: https://lnkd.in/enMv2UPn

Romain Dillet a partagé ceciAI is making it easier than ever for startups to launch second products. The interesting part is that many of these products don’t start with a blank page: they emerge from internal workflows, existing users, operational pain points and distribution advantages. In my newsletter, I look at why companies like Deel and Revolut are turning internal tools into standalone products, and why voice transcription apps like Wispr Flow show that the real moat is often packaging and distribution rather than the underlying model. Maybe the classic startup question is no longer just “build or buy?” but “build, buy, or build and sell?” If you want the full newsletter with sharp analysis on European tech, subscribe here 👉 hypertext.fyi Hypertext is sponsored by Box.

Romain Dillet a partagé ceciEurope had two standout AI labs: Mistral and Aleph Alpha. Same starting point. Very different outcomes. In Aleph Alpha’s case, it turns out betting on commoditization is risky if it doesn’t happen fast enough. But what else can we learn from the German AI company? I explore this topic (and two others!) in my newsletter Hypertext. If you want the full newsletter with sharp analysis on European tech, subscribe here 👉 hypertext.fyi

Romain Dillet a partagé ceciWhen I started working in journalism, you were only as good as your last article. Running a newsletter makes that even more true. Every issue is a fresh introduction. For some readers, it’s the first thing they’ll ever read from you. They don’t care about the archive, the bylines, or the years spent covering tech. They care whether this one was worth their time. That’s part of what makes Hypertext interesting to write. Every edition has to earn its place in your inbox. And this week’s edition is a good one. A few years ago Diego Simeone was forced to bench Antoine Griezmann because Atlético Madrid didn’t want to pay an obligatory €40 million fee to resign the Frenchman from Barcelona. Luckily for them, it paid off. A bit of context: When Griezmann re-signed for Atléti on a two-year loan from Barcelona in 2021, the deal included a clause: if he played 45 minutes or more in at least 50% of available games, they would owe Barcelona €40 million. In his first season back, Griezmann was one of Atlético’s most important players. He played over 80% of available games. Barcelona believed the clause had already been triggered – and were prepared to go to court for it. Atléti saw it differently, because the loan agreement was over two years – not one. The problem was that their wage bill had hit €200 million and they didn’t to pay €40m for a player approaching 32 on a €21m salary. Barcelona also were also trying to contain their inflated wage budget. So they had no choice but to bench Griezmann to force Barca back to the negotiating table. Barca initially threatened legal action to force Atléti to pay up, but they also couldn’t risk having Griezmann’s wages back on their books at the end of the season. In the end, they caved and agreed to sell the player for a reduced fee: €25 million. It turned into a masterclass in negotiation from the Madrid side – but only because they were able to track the conditional trigger in the contract before it was too late. The high-profile nature of the case also helped, but most clubs can’t rely on that level of visibility. Nor do they have the right tools in place to track clauses efficiently. I’ve spoken to directors of football who spend two days a month manually cross-referencing bonus clauses with performance data. Another missed nearly missed out on £1 million in sell-on clauses because they weren’t properly tracking. This is a gross waste of time, money and resources. With Pelly, we enable clubs to track every sell-on clause they’re owed and every performance bonus they need to budget for, all in one place, updated after every match. If you’d rather that than manual tracking every month, drop me a DM – I’d love to show you how Pelly can help.

I’ve spent a lot of time lately talking to founders about where the "hype" ends and the real value begins. For Fintech, its Embedded Finance: not just a buzzword but reality; it’s the hard work of building financial tools directly into the platforms people use every day. We just released the latest Metis Emerge, and I’m really proud of the stories in this one: - Why we’re backing teams like wamo, Eloquent AI, Kamion, and Getmobil. - How we’re actually using AI / data to make better decisions (and help our founders do the same). - Metis is growing. I’m thrilled to welcome some brilliant new faces to the Metis Ventures family who are helping us move the needle.

In “The State of the French Tech Ecosystem 2025”, Alexandre Dewez's study identifies several strategies, including our Operating model. But for Serena, this approach wasn't a differentiation play. We just built the fund we wish we'd had as entrepreneurs. As former founders and operators ourselves (more than half of our team are former founders), we experienced firsthand that building category leaders requires more than just capital. It demands roll-up-your-sleeves operational work, especially in the earliest stages when foundations are laid: GTM strategy, team building, product development, fundraising approach. One that steps in from day one. One that establishes long-term relationships. One that brings capital, yes, but also the tools, experience, and a task force of experienced Operating Partners ready to tackle 100% of scaling challenges. 📊 The results speak for themselves ✅ 75% of our Seed startups reach Series A (vs. 29% average) ✅ In 17 months instead of 25 ✅ Our startups are 4.5x more likely to succeed in their next fundraising (source: Dealroom.co, which ranked Serena in the top 5% of value-add investors). Companies like Descartes Underwriting, Pelico, Electra, and Malt have benefited from this model since their earliest rounds. Today, they're establishing themselves as leaders in their respective categories. Many thanks Alexandre Dewez, for the feature!
