Nauczycielskie Kolegium Języków Obcych in Sieradz
[edit]This article on Nauczycielskie Kolegium Języków Obcych in Sieradz has a lot of issues. No references and a sloppy format, for starters. Apparently there were a dozen of these Foreign Language Teacher Training colleges throughout Poland between 1990 and 2015; each one of them has its own wikidata item. There is a wikidata disambiguation page, here. In my opinion, the english wikipedia might want to have an artile on the experience of the NKJO´s between 1990 and 2015 in general but not one on each NKJO per city. Can someone who can access and read Polish sources please transform this article into a new one about the now defunct Foreign Language Teacher Training Colleges in Poland? Thanks! Which Polish periodical?
[edit]Hi. I'm trying to decipher which newspaper or magazine this article reposted on Facebook is from, and if possible find a canonical source for it. It is about Kazimierz Eckstein. The bit I'm having difficulty with is
Źródło: KAJ,11.89.,JK.t.6.s.16
which I think means
- Source: KAJ, November 1989, [author] J. Kamiński, volume 6, page 16
But I'd be grateful for confirmation and what KAJ stands for. Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 05:44, 31 August 2026 (UTC)
- I searched a lot but unfortunately couldn't find the original source. What I did find though was this (p. 47 in the pdf viewer / p. 45 in the actual source); titled "PAMIĘCI KAZIMIERZA ECKSTEINA" (In memory of Kazimierz Eckstei), by Franciszek Rózio. You may run the paragraph through Google Translate. But in summary it talks about his life, works, what he did, and his death. In this source though, it's a little different because it says "The first group of prisoners was executed by firing squad; Kazimierz Eckstein was likely among them", so it doesn't 100% confirm his death as it's speculative, unlike the source you cited.
- What I can confirm is that the author is definitely who you think it was, Jan A, Kamiński. This showcases some of his works around the same time (1988) in the same area, but nothing about Eckstein unfortunately. Whilst for "KAJ", like I said I couldn't find anything, but my guess is that it is actually a reference or abbreviation of an archive collection. Which would mean that what you think is the volume, actually stands for "teczka" (folder). Found another FB source about him but this won't really help (it's not a RS). Fortek67 (talk) 11:47, 31 August 2026 (UTC)
- That is awesome, thank you! And I see that there's another clipping via Facebook that's signed KAJ, so maybe that is just the pen name for Jan A Kamiński, given the similarity of initials...? And that the source is an archive of his columns as you deduced. Cheers, SunloungerFrog (talk) 12:33, 31 August 2026 (UTC)
- No worries :) Fortek67 (talk) 14:18, 31 August 2026 (UTC)

Voivodeship and county flags in infoboxes
[edit]Looking at most infoboxes of villages or towns in Poland, the flag of the voivodeship or the county isn't included. Now of course, the voivodeship flag is already present in many town articles such as Biała Podlaska, but I think they should be in all settlement articles.
I've listed examples at User:Fortek67/Sandbox3; see the infobox and list of flags. You can actually see that currently no counties have their own country data template (except for {{Żary}}) – these would have to be created, which actually is a really easy and simple process. I assume there would be no problem doing this; but please correct me if I'm wrong.
My main question here is whether or not we should include the flag of the county in the infobox, or if it is too much. Of course adding a flag for the gmina would be too much imo, especially since not all gminas have official flags. Looking for consensus here, I do plan to start a bot that will do this to all articles, eventually. Fortek67 (talk) 17:31, 14 September 2026 (UTC)
- @Kiwipete, since you've made thousands of contributions to town and village articles in Poland, maybe I could get an opinion from you? Fortek67 (talk) 18:15, 15 September 2026 (UTC)
- I think the general concensus on Wikipedia is that flags in infoboxes should be limited to just countries and/or also the first subdivision. I think putting flags for counties and municipalities is an overkill, as the infobox must first and for all be to show the important information, not be a decoration with bunch of colourful rectangles. Artemis Andromeda (talk) 01:29, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- Honestly I agree, adding flags of the counties would be overkill. Looking at MOS:INFOBOXFLAG, it would actually be allowed for flags to be present in the country (which already is) and the highest-level subdivision (which would be the voivodeship). Fortek67 (talk) 17:12, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
MOS:POLAND has basically been the same since it was written up in 2009. It definitely needs updates on some of its policies, for example voivodeship names following a discussion in June. I've already made a small addition regarding it, but imo everything else needs review and adjustments, if not rewriting.

- Idk, if it's a part of the style, but articles for Polish places are in a horrendous state, especially, the small villages and towns. Firstly, they usually say an "unit of unit of territorial administration" instead of just saying "county" (powiat), or "municipality" (gmina), and it definitely needs to be changed. Secondly a lot of places, especially villages list how far a place if from a major city, which is usully not something listed on Wikipedia articles, and the data is not accurate, as it was auto generated anyway. And thirdly, sometiems I see the articles listing what voivodeship it was in prior to 1999, which is not needed, a WP:Trivia (as it could as well list all administrative subdivisions all the way to 966 for that matter), and primary, in my opinion a consequence of some vocal minority of people refusing to accept the changes to voivodeship systems all the way back in the early years of Wikipedia. That thing definetly has to change. Another minor thing, I usually see IPA pronounciation just put after the name, without any parenesis, and I think it should be changed to look like for example "Bukowo (Polish: [buˈkɔ.vɔ])". Idk if that's what you had in mind when you meant about updating the writing style, but those are my nitpicks of what's wrong with the current style of articles. Artemis Andromeda (talk) 17:43, 17 September 2026 (UTC)
- Highly agree with you here – and Kiwipete has actually helped quite a lot on cleaning these articles up.
villages list how far a place if from a major city
– it's a lot better than what it used to be (as a lot of these statements have been removed), but of course, the work is not done here. I do plan to start up my own AWB bot that could further cleanup these articles, so we could perhaps began listing things that need fixing. See also the discussion above regarding flags in town and village articles. - I think we should make an official policy on MOS:POLAND disallowing unsourced locations, following a quite recent ANI discussion which involved Kiwipete, regarding the removal of these statements. I think the major problem was the unclear edit summary used.
- @Electricmemory, since you made the ANI report, I would like to get your further opinion on this. For more context, a brief discussion was made here about the removal of these location satements. Fortek67 (talk) 18:04, 17 September 2026 (UTC)
- Can you clarify what you mean by "disallowing unsourced locations"? Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 08:42, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- Piotrus, see this diff for an example. These statements are usually along the lines of "It lies approximately ... km from ...", and was added by Kotbot during the creation of these village articles. Kiwipete brought this problem up (it is a problem because it's unsourced, and usually inaccurate) just over a year ago here. Although now looking back at it receiving consensus from just one other editor doesn't necessarily mean you should be immediately removing these statements across tens of thousands of articles. Fortek67 (talk) 17:08, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- @Fortek67 Ah, the joys of Kotbot cleanup, when will they end :P Well, I actually find such information (about nearby large towns/cities) useful - if sourced. I wouldn't spend my time removing it, but I am certainly not going to reinstate unreferenced information of that type, but I'd support keeping the (probably few) cases it is referenced. For MOS style, we should probably have a pan-wiki rule (for all such articles) whether we want this kind of information (referenced) in the lead or somewhere else. - IMHO, "what voivodeship it was in prior to 1999, which is not needed" is not trivia - it's a valid part of history. Certainly not a lead-worthy material. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 08:41, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- The issue is this stuff is usually in the lead, or the only thing in history section (and almost always unsourced). And the other thing is that it is the only thing mentioned. You could as well mention what voivodeship the village was in 1945–1975 with the even older voivodeship system, or what governorate in Congress Poland it was, or even what Polisu Lithuanian Commonwealth voivodeships, and so on and so on. It is highly selctive and scewed to represent the era people were nostalgic for when wikipedia was created. It really doesn't bring much to the article. Artemis Andromeda (talk) 17:17, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- Also, it is a part of history, I'm not disputing that, but it is not revelant to the history of a random village. It's something that's revelant to the history of voivodeships or maybe even counties. Artemis Andromeda (talk) 17:19, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- @Artemis Andromeda Articles about minor geographical locations have a hard time with DUE. Sometimes I saw such articles dominated by a lengthy section about the history of local Jews, or some other topic. That said, I tend to be supportive of WP:NOTPAPER and I also believe that a well-developed article about a village (at GA/FA level) should discuss its administrative history. I wouldn't remove such information, although it should be sourced, and of course, in the long run, it should be only a small part of history. (I think that long ago, in some articles, I myself might have added information about some villages or towns being part of this and that I/IIRP voivodeship; I never cared about post-1945 divisions much, but for pre-I/IIRP I find such content more meaningful, particularly for places which are no longer part of Poland, and where such information might be the only mention of that history - this is related to the fact that some folks like to delete or censor this information. Similar things happen for German history information on Regained Territories...). I digress, perhaps. Anyway, TL;DR, I support having administrative history information in such articles. - I have added a naming convetion for railways at MOS:POLAND, see this diff. This follows pre-existing titles at Category:Railway lines in Poland, specifically Category:Standard-gauge railways in Poland. Fortek67 (talk) 19:08, 18 September 2026 (UTC)
- Maybe it could be officially established to have Polish articles use British English, since that's the standard used in schooling system, academia, and the government, and overall Poland being closer geographically and historically to the UK than the US. And the fact majority of Polish articles are already written in British English, including Poland itself. Artemis Andromeda (talk) 17:56, 23 September 2026 (UTC)
- Strong support. I think this is a great idea, and your points are very true, so you should add it. Fortek67 (talk) 18:28, 23 September 2026 (UTC)
- Also, another thing that I belive should really be revisited. Why was it decided that out of all administrative units, "gmina" is somehow the untranslatable one? Out of the three of those, it is the most generic term, and simply means "municipality". Moreover, in Polish language, there's no differences between municipalities in Poland, and translating names of those in other countries like Germany, France, etc. There's nothing unique on untranslatable in Polish term, and it seem to really exist in this form simply because naming article by native name make it look more unique, similarly to dzielnica and osiedle, both of which should really just be merged with city district and neighbourhood, or recently deleted ratusz which was really just town hall but in Poland. I think those articles could simply be named, for example, "Kołbaskowo (municipality)" instead of "Gmina Kołbaskowo", which is also more akeen to how it is actually done on Polish Wiki. Also, on English Wiki, "Gmina" (capitalised) is treated as part of the official name of the units, while it is really just a descriptor. In the articles itself, they could also simply be referred to as "the municipality of Kołbaskowo", as in a sentence "it is located in the municipality of Kołbaskowo". And the articles for municipalities themselves could for example start as "Kołbaskowo (IPA here) is a municipality in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland, within Police County..." etc. Consequently, "gmina wiejska", "gmina miejska", and "gmina miejsko-wiejska", should be translated as "rural municipality", "urban municipality", and "urban and rular municipality" respectively, as currently I think most articles fair to really distinguish those types in text on English Wikipedia. What do you think about this? Even alternatively, they following convention could be applied instead, where "municipality is put behind the name, for example Kołbaskowo Municipality, as it is done with "Police County" and "West Pomeranian Voivodeship", or how it's done in some Anglophonic nations, eg. US with units like Canville Township, Kansas etc.Artemis Andromeda (talk) 00:34, 24 September 2026 (UTC)
- @Fortek67 @Piotrus Artemis Andromeda (talk) 00:35, 24 September 2026 (UTC)
- Everything can be translated, but we need to show that official documents or established scholarship practice does it. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 05:18, 24 September 2026 (UTC)
- @Piotrus @Artemis Andromeda
- According to the official European Union English Style Guide (p. 111–121; 119–129 in PDF viewer), it should be:
- gmina → municipality
- gmina miejska → urban municipality
- gmina miejsko-wiejska / miasto i gmina → urban-rural municipality
- dzielnica → borough (usually)
- osiedle → neighbourhood (sometimes also housing estate or residential zone)
- sołectwo → civil parish
- sołtys → civil parish executive officer
- I think gminas should be titled Kołbaskowo Municipality, instead of Kołbaskowo (municipality), to be consistent with current titles such as Wałbrzych County. What is interesting is that the EU uses province instead of voivodeship, and district instead of county – although I don't think these need changing.
- What I would also like to point out, and what I think is important is that the full voivodeship name shouldn't be used. Here's how the EU does it:
- Dolnośląskie → Lower Silesia
- Kujawsko-Pomorskie → Kuyavian–Pomeranian
- Lubelskie → Lublin
- Lubuskie (stays the same; but should be Lubusz)
- Łódzkie → Łódź
- Małopolskie → (stays the same; but should be Lesser Poland)
- Mazowieckie → Mazovia
- Opolskie → Opole
- Podkarpackie → Subcarpathia (should actually be Podkarpackie, according to the previous consensus in talk page)
- Podlaskie (stays the same)
- Pomorskie → Pomerania
- Śląskie → Silesia
- Świętokrzyskie (stays the same)
- Warmińsko-Mazurskie → Warmia–Masuria
- Wielkopolskie → Greater Poland
- Zachodniopomorskie → Western Pomerania
- So Biskupin, Lower Silesian Voivodeship → Biskupin, Lower Silesia, Bednary, Greater Poland Voivodeship → Bednary, Greater Poland. I think you get the point. Though the article on the voivodeship itself should not be shortened to Lower Silesia for example, as that would be ambiguous the region, Lower Silesia.
- The document does give Poland 12 pages, so I do recommend you see it as I've only mentioned the most important parts. Fortek67 (talk) 17:39, 2 October 2026 (UTC)
- I would argue Polish "dzielnica" are actually city district which are subdivions of municipality, and not borough which usually operates as an equivalent of a county. But I'm happy there's a standard talking about municipalities :) Artemis Andromeda (talk) 20:05, 2 October 2026 (UTC)
- @Artemis Andromeda I agree (also based on interwiki: pl:dzielnica miasta vs pl:Borough (not translated). That said, other than this I'd support adapting the EU recommended English terminology for our purposes as well. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:54, 4 October 2026 (UTC)
- Sounds good then. I've updated the guideline to reflect these rules – feel free to add anything you think is missing.
- And sometime I'll begin mass moving the titles of Gminas to municipality, since we all seem to support the idea. Fortek67 (talk) 10:52, 4 October 2026 (UTC)
- @Fortek67 @Piotrus I was wondering. Since we are already discussing this topic, maybe articles Powiat and City with powiat rights should be moved to something like "Counties of Poland", and either "City with county rights" or simply "City county (Poland)". Since all articles for counties in Poland refer to them simply as counties, and we have just established it's the official translation.Artemis Andromeda (talk) 17:58, 10 October 2026 (UTC)
- Artemis Andromeda, I actually did that yesterday with Municipalities of Poland, moved it from gmina. Fortek67 (talk) 18:01, 10 October 2026 (UTC)
- @Fortek67 Yes I saw. This remained me that Powiat still used Polish name, and is the odd one out amits Voivodeships of Poland and Municipalities of Poland. I think it should be moved to "Counties of Poland". :) Artemis Andromeda (talk) 18:03, 10 October 2026 (UTC)
- I say moving Powiat to Counties of Poland and City with powiat rights to City-county (Poland). Fortek67 (talk) 18:02, 10 October 2026 (UTC)
- I support that notion. Artemis Andromeda (talk) 18:04, 10 October 2026 (UTC)
Done. Both articles have been cleaned up too, I do say they need some rewriting and source citing though. Fortek67 (talk) 18:21, 10 October 2026 (UTC)

Should Battle of Coștangalia be seen as part of the January Uprising?
[edit]Hi. The Battle of Coștangalia is an interesting little event, where a group of January Uprising volunteers who organized abroad, tried to travel to Poland to join the fight. While passing through Romania, they got into a fight with regional forces who did not want armed foreign rebels walking through their territory. Currently Polish and English versions of the article state, that it was a "part of the January Uprising". And I wonder if that's a factual statement. It happened in the context of the January Uprising. But it happened far outside the war theatre, in a neutral country, and the fight was against a neutral country (Romania) and a belligerent who was not at war with the aforementioned neutral country (Polish rebels). The January Uprising was specifically a conflict what took place between Poland and Russia within Poland. As such I do not think it is correct to really count this as one of the battles of the January Uprising, when it was really just a random event that took place in Romania. What do you think? Artemis Andromeda (talk) 17:11, 20 September 2026 (UTC)
- @Artemis Andromeda I'd ask about it on pl wiki first. To me it seems related, but whether it is "part of it", hmmm. I'd lean towards, yes, it is. Just like some battles/events of Polish September '39 took place on international waters (Baltic Sea stuff). Etc. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 05:19, 24 September 2026 (UTC)
