Mass message invite

[edit]

Hi, what happened to the mass message tool? I was just going to use it to alert editors from the previous contest of a new one in November. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:40, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

Try again now. Max (talk) 16:11, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I had it linked in my tools down the left but it's no longer there! Do you have a link to it? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:20, 15 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

The list of journals is here

Fetched DOIs for 87 journals. Couldn't find a DOI for quite a few. Article DOIs were excluded, but some of the DOIs returned may still be article DOIs. Max (talk) 11:53, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
What do you mean by 'article DOI'? All of those point to articles, no? Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 14:59, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
The ones I gave you are mostly the main journal DOIs. Journals can have many articles with their own DOIs, but I leave those out so the list doesn't get too long for one journal. Some articles are also linked to two or more journals, so the same DOI can show up for multiple journals. Max (talk) 16:16, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Journals can have many articles with their own DOIs ... that's the normal, no? Every article has their own unique DOIS. Some articles are also linked to two or more journals, so the same DOI can show up for multiple journals. This I don't understand at all. DOIs are for articles, an article cannot be in multiple journals, so a DOI cannot be for multiple journals. Do you have examples of what you mean because from where I stand you just told me that normal things are extraordinary, and that impossible things are common. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 16:23, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think I explained that badly. What I meant is that while going through the database, I saw quite a few article DOIs showing up against more than one journal. I left those out and was mainly keeping the DOIs associated with the journal title itself, rather than the individual articles, otherwise the list would get very long. I wasn't saying that those articles are actually published in multiple journals, just that the database was showing them that way. I'm on mobile right now and not really used to editing on it, so I probably didn't explain it properly. Max (talk) 16:52, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply
Just noting that I excluded the obvious article DOIs and was basically trying to list the journal-title-level DOIs, but the database isn't great at distinguishing them, so some of the DOIs returned may still be article DOIs. Max (talk) 17:05, 27 September 2026 (UTC)Reply

October 2026 Administrator Elections – Call for Candidates

[edit]

The administrator elections process has officially started! Qualified editors are encouraged to find at least one experienced nominator. Self-nominations are also allowed. Please review instructions at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/October 2026/Candidates.

Here is the schedule:

  • September 29 – October 5: Nominations phase (we are here)
  • October 8–12: Discussion phase
  • October 13–19: SecurePoll voting phase

Please note the following:

  • The requirements to run are identical to RFA—a prospective candidate must be extended confirmed. However, in practice, few candidates succeed without ~10K edits, some content creation, no recent behavioral issues, and a nominator.
  • Prospective candidates are advised to become familiar with the community's expectations of administrators, which are much higher than the minimum requirement of having extended confirmed status. This includes reviewing successful and unsuccessful RFAs, reading the essay Wikipedia:Advice for admin elections candidates, and possibly requesting an optional poll on their chances of passing.
  • The process will have a seven day call for candidates phase, a two day pause, a five day discussion phase, and a seven day private vote using SecurePoll. Discussion and questions are only allowed on the candidate pages during the discussion phase.
  • The outcome of this process is identical to making a request for adminship. There is no official difference between an administrator appointed through RFA versus administrator elections.
  • Administrator elections are also a valid means of regaining adminship for de-sysopped editors.

Ask any questions about the process at the talk page. Later, a user talk message will be sent to official candidates with additional information about the process.

If you are interested in the process, please make sure to watchlist the appropriate pages. A watchlist notice will be added when the discussion phase opens, and again when the voting phase opens.

Hi! we're adding a leaderboard to the GA backlog drives per the RfC outcome. I'm posting here to see if you could program User:DreamRimmer bot III to do it as well.. Vestrian24Bio 08:28, 2 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Retirement

[edit]

I am retiring from Wikipedia. Wikipedia was built on the philosophy of curiosity leading to discovery. I believe this is why I was attracted in the first place. I'm stepping back while I still remember what the curiosity felt like. Thank you for your contributions! All messages on my talk page are welcome. CostalCal (talk) 02:53, 3 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Administrators' newsletter – October 2026

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2026).

Administrator changes

removed

Oversight changes

removed

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, the good article criteria have been amended to add accessibility requirements.
  • Following an RfC, late signatures added to administrator recall petitions after 720 hours from opening are reverted or struck and do not count towards the threshold, even if the petition has not yet been formally closed.
  • The post-May 2026 administrator elections RfCs concluded with consensus for election monitors to curate blatantly inappropriate questions after posting, and to remove or merge true duplicates, clearly marking merged questions. Calls for candidates will include advisory guidance that users with less than one year’s experience or 5,000 edits generally lack a realistic chance of success.

Technical news

  • Interface administrators no longer need to specify the ResourceLoader option in the definitions for gadgets on MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition as gadgets are always loaded through ResourceLoader. (T298199)
  • The list=abusefilters API module now supports formatversion=2 and includes breaking changes to its responses. In particular, the actions property is now a JSON array rather than a string, regardless of the format version. Maintainers of user scripts and other code using this module should check compatibility and update their code as needed. (T435828)

Arbitration

Obituaries

  • Doug Weller passed away on 30 September 2026. Doug Weller began editing Wikipedia in 2006 and became an administrator in 2008, making nearly 275,000 edits over two decades. He served on the Arbitration Committee from 2015 through 2018 and was also a longtime CheckUser and Oversighter.
