Question from Chosen30 on Sesame Street video games (22:32, 9 October 2026)

[edit]

Hello how do I create a citation --Chosen30 (talk) 22:32, 9 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Chosen30, hi there, great question.
I see you're editing on mobile. In that case, probably the easiest way is:
  • Go to the section of the article where you want to add a citation.
  • Tap the little pencil icon at the side of the section heading. This will open up the editing interface.
  • Switch to visual editing, if you're not already in this mode. You can do this by tapping the little pencil in the top right, then selecting "Visual editing".
  • Tap where you want to add a citation.
  • Tap the speech marks icon at the top of the page (between the underlined A and the link icon).
  • If it's an online source, copy/paste the link to the source where indicated, then tap "create", and a citation should be generated. (If it's not an online source, then tap "manual" and then tap the type of source, then add as many details as you know.
  • Save your changes to the article. Ideally, add an edit summary like "added citation about X" so it's clear to other users what you've done.
I hope that helps! Let me know if you run into any challenges or have any questions during the process, and I'll do my best to assist. Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 09:05, 10 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from PeterDSM (20:55, 10 October 2026)

[edit]

Hi. Did you like being an editor? If yes, do you think you have ever done something that never brought you happiness? If no, how do you feel when you think about what you would have liked to do? --PeterDSM (talk) 20:55, 10 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@PeterDSM: hi there, and welcome to Wikipedia! What an intriguing set of questions. I do like being an editor, yes. I find it personally fulfilling to work on articles about interesting people and topics, especially in my areas of interest (primarily New Zealand literature).
I get a bit lost with your second question though! Have I ever done something that never brought me happiness...? I suppose I've done some tasks and jobs in my life simply because they needed to be done. So far everything I've done on Wikipedia has been satisfying one way or another though.
Is that sort of what you were wondering about? And, if you're open to sharing, I'd like to know what brings you to Wikipedia, and what you're thinking about editing. Happy to point you in the right direction if you have any questions. Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 23:54, 10 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from Thisannablunt (11:04, 12 October 2026)

[edit]

hi emma, i wrote an article last week and im not sure if it has been uploaded or not. i think it was in my sandbox and i can't find it. lmk if u have any tips! thanks --Thisannablunt (talk) 11:04, 12 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Thisannablunt, it looks like you may have found your draft, but just in case, it's at Draft:Debit. :) If you're having trouble with this in the future, you can access your contributions by going to your user page and clicking 'User contributions' on the sidebar or 'Contributions' from the dropdown menu. Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 20:16, 12 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from Delors26 (10:01, 13 October 2026)

[edit]

Hi Emma, I found a webpage where the link to the external source is confusing and does not actually point to the "real source" (i.e., the actual scientific paper). The page I'm referring to is:

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Protection_of_Information_in_Computer_Systems&action=edit&section=4

The external link currently references "a webpage" - which is fine to some degree, because everyone can read it and it appears to be a copy of the original (copyrighted?) article. However, I think a reference to the paper with the real publication data: @ARTICLE{1451869,

 author={Saltzer, J.H. and Schroeder, M.D.},
 journal={Proceedings of the IEEE},
 title={The protection of information in computer systems},
 year={1975},
 volume={63},
 number={9},
 pages={1278-1308},
 keywords={Protection;Authorization;Permission;Access control;Terminology;Data security;Information security;Computer architecture;Modems},
 doi={10.1109/PROC.1975.9939}}

should be added to make it easy for everyone to find the real paper (which is surprisingly hard when you just follow the links on the page)

Additionally, the discussed paper never appeared in the mentioned symposium. In the symposium mentioned in the external link a paper that eventually led to the discussed paper appeared. What is your recommendation to fix these issues? --Delors26 (talk) 10:01, 13 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Delors26: hi there, and thank you for your thoughtful question!
What I'd suggest is adding a sentence to the lead of the article saying something like, "The paper was published in the Proceedings of the IEEE journal", and then adding a citation giving the reference to the paper with the accurate publication data.
I think it's useful to still keep the external link available to the readable version. But maybe update this to remove the symposium information and replace it with information about where the paper is hosted, i.e. "University of Virginia, Department of Computer Science".
If you have a source for the information about the earlier symposium (i.e. that different paper that eventually led to this paper appeared), you could also add that to the article, if you wanted.
Hope that makes sense! Let me know what you think, and if you need any help proceeding. :) I'm going to pop a welcome message on your talk page with some other potentially useful links. Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 21:29, 13 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your tips and suggestions. I just did my first edit and I hope it satisfies all requirements. Delors26 (talk) 08:05, 15 October 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Delors26: Great work! I've just made a small tweak to the citation formatting, but it wasn't wrong previously (just a tidy-up really). All the best for your future editing, and do reach out again if you have any further questions. :) Chocmilk03 (talk) 20:37, 15 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Further proposed updates to Carol Alexander biography

[edit]

Hello Chocmilk03,

Thank you again for your help with my earlier factual corrections and for your very welcoming message.

I have now submitted a comprehensive proposed update to my biography, covering my academic career, research, publications and professional activities.

I have also taken account of your helpful observation about independent secondary sources and included 39 references, including academic journal publications, independent assessments of my books and institutional sources.

As you are already familiar with the article, I wondered whether you might be willing to review the new proposal when convenient?

The full proposal is here: Proposed comprehensive update to Carol Alexander biography

I would be very grateful for your guidance, but of course understand if you do not have the time.

Many thanks,

Alexocarol (talk) 09:18, 15 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Alexocarol: Hi there Carol. Thanks for your message! I'm a bit time limited for Wikipedia at the moment unfortunately. I've posted a message on the talk page of the article with some suggestions for how best to proceed. Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 21:50, 15 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from Big Z On Something (17:24, 18 October 2026)

[edit]

Hello, my name is Zaidh. I'm interested in editing however i don't plan on being a hardcore editor but rather someone who does this when they get bored or in their free time. with that in mind I'm genuinely curious on where do i start editing as i have zero experience whatsoever and what material to refer to when making edits --Big Z On Something (talk) 17:24, 18 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Big Z On Something: Hi Zaidh, thanks for your question! Casual contributions are very welcome; definitely no expectation to be on Wikipedia 24/7. :) In general, I find the best way to get started is to look at pages on subjects you're interested in or know a bit about, and start with small edits: e.g. fixing spelling or grammar, improving unclear wording, fixing factual errors or adding missing information to the page.
It's very OK though to make mistakes and learn as you go; Wikipedia can seem to have a lot of rules but most people don't know them all when they start (I definitely made mistakes as a new editor). The main thing to know is that it's important that everything you fix or add is supported by a published reliable source (avoid adding things that you know from your own personal experience, for example).
I'll pop a welcome message on your talk page that has some additional links that may be helpful (or may not!). Happy too to keep chatting, if you want to share what area you're interested in editing (I could potentially help you find some pages that might be worth looking at!). Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 20:32, 18 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from Nursekibria (06:31, 21 October 2026)

[edit]

how do i create citation? --Nursekibria (talk) 06:31, 21 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Nursekibria: Welcome to Wikipedia, and thanks for your question! If you're wanting to add a citation to an existing article, generally the easiest way (assuming you're editing on a computer rather than on a mobile device) is:
  • Click 'edit source' at the top of the page. This will open the edit window.
  • Find the point in the article's text where you want to add a citation, and click there.
  • Click 'Cite' in the toolbar at the top of the page.
  • Select one of the 'Templates' from the dropdown menu that best suits the type of source. For example, "cite web" is good for websites generally, while "cite news" is better for newspaper articles and news websites.
  • A template window then pops up, where you fill in as much information as possible about the source, and give a unique name for it in the "Ref name" field.
  • Click the "Insert" button, which will add the required wikitext in the edit window. If you wish, you can also "Preview" how your reference will look first.
Don't worry too much about getting the formatting perfect or getting everything in the right place - it can easily be fixed later if it's not quite right!
Also, as a general rule, you should only be adding citations to reliable published secondary sources: like newspaper articles, peer reviewed journal articles, published books and magazines, etc.
Help:Referencing for beginners is a useful guide that has more information, but I'm also happy to help if you have any specific questions or if any of the above instructions are confusing. Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 20:22, 21 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:The Asia-Oceania Destubathon

[edit]

Hi, just to let you know that I'm running The Asia-Oceania Destubathon in November. £2000 (about NZ$4,694.08) in prizes. It would be great to see content improved for New Zealand and the Pacific region as part of this. Sign up if interested, I'm sure there are a lot of stale old NZ articles needing destubbing! If it is a success, perhaps next year we could do something specifically for New Zealand or with Australia and the regional Pacific. Thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:42, 26 October 2026 (UTC)Reply

Question from Editor838329lol (02:10, 4 November 2026)

[edit]

how do i edit well --Editor838329lol (talk) 02:10, 4 November 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Editor838329lol: Welcome to Wikipedia, and thanks for your question! Great question, and there could be lots of different answers. Personally, I'd say:
  • Remember that Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia (not a way to promote yourself or your business, or a directory of all possible information, or a newspaper).
  • Use reliable secondary sources (like articles in mainstream newspapers and magazines or books published by reputable publishers).
  • Treat other editors with respect and civility. Almost all of us are volunteers and we're here to build an encyclopaedia.
Also, the best way to get better at editing is to do more editing, and don't worry too much about making mistakes! It's a learning curve and we all get things wrong from time to time. If you follow the above principles, you won't go too far wrong.
I'll pop a message on your talk page with some other useful links, but please do ask if you have any further questions; I'm more than happy to help. Cheers, Chocmilk03 (talk) 02:24, 4 November 2026 (UTC)Reply
