Bill Gates nails it: Interview by The Atlantic. Something on the order of the Drake Well or Chicago Pile-1. Maybe some computers running genetic programming algorithms will help us find it, before "time runs out". A breakthrough in stellarator or tokamak research could be a game-changer.

Women On $20s

The non-profit organization "Women On $20s" conducted a poll to choose a woman to put on a newly designed US twenty-dollar bill (to replace Andrew Jackson). The two leading vote-getters were Eleanor Roosevelt and Harriet Tubman. Others on the ballot were Rosa Parks, Wilma Mankiller, Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Clara Barton, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Margaret Sanger, Rachel Carson, Shirley Chisholm, Alice Paul, Frances Perkins, Barbara Jordan, Patsy Mink and Betty Friedan. As I was not familiar with some of these names, I looked them up and linked to them here. I think Jeannette Rankin should have been included on this ballot.

“I hope we can convince the next treasurer to print an equal number of $20 bills with both Jackson and Tubman.” Sounds like a great idea to me. NPOV and all. The last president to pay off our national debt in 1835.

Wikipedia peaked in 2008?

A ten-year update of Google Ngram data would help answer that question. By the way, for more on Culturomics and the Google Ngram Viewer, I highly recommend ISBN 978-1-59448-745-3.

UPDATE: Google has updated data to 2019! The answer is NO! Check back in 10 years to see whether Wikipedia peaked in 2019; its growth curve does seem to be flattening.

  • Following an RfC, late signatures added to administrator recall petitions after 720 hours from opening are reverted or struck and do not count towards the threshold, even if the petition has not yet been formally closed.
  • The post-May 2026 administrator elections RfCs concluded with consensus for election monitors to curate blatantly inappropriate questions after posting, and to remove or merge true duplicates, clearly marking merged questions. Calls for candidates will include advisory guidance that users with less than one year’s experience or 5,000 edits generally lack a realistic chance of success.

  • Doug Weller passed away on 30 September 2026. Doug Weller began editing Wikipedia in 2006 and became an administrator in 2008, making nearly 275,000 edits over two decades. He served on the Arbitration Committee from 2015 through 2018 and was also a longtime CheckUser and Oversighter.

Setup and configuration

Submit a patch On Windows, open a Git Bash window. On Ubuntu, there is no separate application called "Git Bash" as found on Windows. Git Bash for Windows is essentially a package that bundles Git with a Bash shell and other common Unix utilities, providing a Unix-like environment on a Windows system. On Ubuntu, the operating system is already based on Linux and uses Bash as its default shell in the terminal. Therefore, if Git is installed, you can use all Git commands directly within your standard Ubuntu terminal.
