Donald Trump Social Media Post on Tariffs with China

Myself and Crwd-ppu are in disagreement over the inclusion of certain content on the portal. Should we include an unsubstantiated accusation made by Trump on social media accusing China of violating the agreement over tariff roll-backs?

  • U.S. President Donald Trump accuses China of violating the temporal suspension of tariffs accorded two weeks ago, while China accuses Trump of discriminatory restrictions against the country. (BBC News)

I removed the edits on the basis of lack of notability, as they were just accusations and were based on unsubstantiated social media posts made by Trump, which is a common occurrence. However, Crwd-ppu has insisted on its inclusion. I now seek input from other editors on whether this news is notable enough for inclusion on the portal. XYZ1233212 (talk) 12:21, 1 June 2025 (UTC)

I personally won't be bothered which way or the other about whether this stays or is cut but I think trump's comment could evolve into something bigger and more notable like an actual investigation or some short of action being taken partly because of his comments but the CCP's response is the same response China and many other governments have levied against trump, that he acts discriminatory where in this isnt any more notable than the numerous other cases of this happening. AssanEcho (talk) 13:42, 1 June 2025 (UTC)
This Washington Post article links the post to the U.S. halting shipments of semiconductor software and chemicals, and aviation supplies to China. This Reuters article discusses the post within the context of a possible call between the U.S. and Chinese Presidents while another one (also from Reuters) discusses it within the context of a letter automakers sent to the Trump administration warning of closures and disruptions. Crwd-ppu (talk) 02:09, 2 June 2025 (UTC)
I do not think it's notable, like others have said, Trump says things all the time. Media has a Trump-bias because he is an inflammatory and controversial figure internationally. Their coverage does not mean it is actually notable, nor are there any direct linkage between his comments and any economical or tariff-related actions.
I also don't see any of the articles Crwd-ppu has linked as being related to this specific social media post that Trump put out at all. Dmhll (talk) 14:42, 2 June 2025 (UTC)
I am in favour of posting genrally understood claims that are notable - as opposed to some Wikipedians arguing against including claims in the current events, only substantial events. IHaveBecauseOfLocks (talk) 19:26, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
Well I just have read more of all these recent claims - and I am even more in favour of including them. IHaveBecauseOfLocks (talk) 20:11, 5 June 2025 (UTC)
If Trump takes a verifiable admin action, that should be alright for inclusion. But Trump is not a realiable source for anything and his claims if disputed should only be included if someone has fact checked their truthiness. So whenever a dispute arises from his statements, the default a priori is disclusion. Gotitbro (talk) 12:48, 1 June 2025 (UTC)
It doesn't seem notable enough to be included here. Only a minuscule percentage of Trump's social media ravings have any real implication. Oneequalsequalsone (talk | contribs) 13:08, 1 June 2025 (UTC)
Notability isn't the same thing as veracity. We can think that Trump was lying about the stuff he wrote, but that is irrelevant to the point that what he wrote (his post on Truth Social) was widely and prominently reported by all of the major news outlets you can think of. Reuters, Washington Post, BBC, New York Times, Associated Press, CNN, Fox, Guardian, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times - you name it, they covered it. When you combine that with the fact that we routinely let news with far less importance and far less coverage on the portal to stand, it is clear that Trump's post satisfies the requirements for inclusion. Crwd-ppu (talk) 13:53, 1 June 2025 (UTC)
Please temper the fact that the media itself has a Trump coverage bias. Also Wikipedia:Not every single thing Donald Trump does deserves an article (says article but the gist applies to all his antics and their coverage on enwiki). Gotitbro (talk) 16:07, 1 June 2025 (UTC)
I get that, but in this case his post didn't get routine coverage - this wasn't run-of-the-mill stuff that got buried at the bottom of the website, this was full-length, in-depth articles that got "front page" coverage across multiple news agencies. Crwd-ppu (talk) 17:28, 1 June 2025 (UTC)

Seems it had some consequences in the markets (see https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/s%26p-500-whipsaws-at-end-of-best-may-since-1990%3a-markets-wrap/89432990 ) but I think it's not a big deal at momment (I added the first version in ITN, now I'm neutral). Iberia-Tao (talk) 18:00, 1 June 2025 (UTC)

Clarification about the event

There appears to be confusion as to what this news event was about and that appears to be affecting how its notability is being perceived by some of the participants here. Part of the reason why that's happening seems to be due to what is in the original complaint and how it has been written which both omitted important facts. The news reports make it clear it wasn't just Trump's post that made the news, it was also the follow-up comment from his trade representative (about rare-earth exports) which they not only said gave more clarity to Trump's post, but also drew an even more direct connection to in their reporting on developments following his post. , , , This is what I tried to get across in my version of the news item but unfortunately there was edit warring over it which has resulted in its exclusion from the portal page. However, given the deficiencies of the current version of the news item that we are being asked to evaluate which makes no mention of Trump's trade representative and fixates only on his post, I'd suggest editors use the version I wrote as a better baseline to go off on instead for determining the notability of this event: U.S. president Donald Trump accuses China of violating a deal to suspend the suspension of tariffs on a Truth Social post. Trump does not provide details, but U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer later clarifies that although China has suspended its tariffs, it still has not been removing non-tariff barriers it had imposed in response to the administration's initial tariffs as agreed to under the deal. (BBC News) Crwd-ppu (talk) 19:16, 2 June 2025 (UTC)

In my opinion, further statements from a government member would be similarly unremarkable, as Trump's government is largely composed of individuals who lack any independence from him. A common sequence of events involves Trump making an unsubstantiated statement, and a member of his government later walking it back with a vague or minor reason, which is similarly unsubstantiated. Due to this, I still favour exclusion of the event.
I also want to clarify that the wording you have proposed was originally proposed by myself here . You later expanded it, which did not add any meaningful content in my opinion. After I reverted you, you insisted on using the current version of the entry
I've added my proposed version of the entry below. Differences between the versions can be viewed here .
China–United States trade war
Nevertheless, I still favor excluding the entry entirely as a first choice.
XYZ1233212 (talk) 02:24, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
This news event doesn't fit the normal pattern. Not only did Trump's trade representative not walk back Trump's post, he doubled down on it in such a way that the media connected his comments to developments which were notable in their own right. That's the point and any suggestions to the contrary is simply denying reality. Crwd-ppu (talk) 07:25, 5 June 2025 (UTC)

Hyperlink for "Greek Orthodox Church" goes to Greek Orthodox Church, would be more appropriate to go to Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch. "Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch" is what "Greek Orthodox" hyperlinks to in the opening of the article Mar Elias Church attack.

nothing else to write than police, crime, and attack?

guys, you have nothing else to report than US style fear news, as michael moore described in bowling for columbine? you collect news from all over the world, and there is so much going on. from kids, helping others, social security, economy, finance, stock market, etc etc. ThurnerRupert (talk) 21:46, 5 July 2025 (UTC)

If there are any notable stories you believe are missing from the "Current events" section, you are more than welcome to add them. It's merely an unfortunate fact that negative events like terror attacks and crime tend to be more impactful, and therefore more notable, then positive events. Active vs passive voice?

Do we have a guideline for when to use either the active or passive voice (besides the MoS)? In yesterday's events, I can't help but see these two competing wordings and how a lack of standardization might introduce systemic bias.

Feature request: RSS feed

I’m a longtime reader of the current events portal, and I’ve been using a third-party RSS feed to consume it. Sometime within the last couple of weeks, that third-party feed stopped updating. It would be great to have an officially supported RSS feed that updates daily instead of relying on fragile third-party solutions. Exchgr (talk) 15:09, 12 September 2025 (UTC)

I was probably relying on the same feed as you. A new one is available at RSSHub 116.48.127.99 (talk) 17:16, 21 September 2025 (UTC)

The "Ongoing" tab has typically has a link to the current events portal. The link now appears to be gone. I am curious as to why this has happened.🪐Kepler-1229b | talk | contribs🪐 21:15, 20 September 2025 (UTC)

It's a disgrace, Joe.
The link should definitely come back, having unclickable dead text, still in bold mind you!, makes very little sense to me, especially on the front page. If it's not clickable I think it should be removed entirely 109.79.9.127 (talk) 12:46, 21 September 2025 (UTC)
I fully agree - strong support for link being reinstated. Houstonnotfromtx (talk) 06:47, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
Agreed. It's particularly discordant because the Recent Deaths link is still clickable. 157.182.216.4 (talk) 08:26, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
Same with "More current events" on the Portal:Current events page. Doyna Yar (talk) 13:31, 22 September 2025 (UTC)
The reason that is not clickable is because the target page is the page you are viewing. - Fuzheado | Talk 14:19, 24 September 2025 (UTC)
I too was surprised that "Ongoing" was not linked anymore. But then I realized that further down in the box, there is a new, logical "More current events" link that points to Portal:Current events. To the average visitor, that is much more descriptive and makes a lot more sense. However, that doesn't necessarily preclude us keeping the "Ongoing" link for legacy purposes. There's no shame in having two paths to the same content. - Fuzheado | Talk 14:21, 24 September 2025 (UTC)

@Rafaelthegreat, I'm sorry, I don't understand what you mean by "right now". If you want this news item about teachers in Alberta to show up on Portal:Canada, you'd need to go to Special:Edit/Portal:Current events/2025 October 6 and add it. That's how the portal about Canada works – mentions of Alberta on this portal will be automagically picked up on that portal. An admin's involvement isn't needed – the part of User:Moxy's message "Portal:Current events that only administrators can edit" is technically correct, but can be easily misunderstood, because subpages of Portal:Current events for specific dates aren't protected. —andrybak (talk) 10:42, 22 October 2025 (UTC)

Grammar mistake

The United States imposes visa restrictions and revokes some existing visas for Nicaraguans, including owners of transportation and travel companies, whom it says facilitate illegal immigration to the U.S. under Nicaragua's migration policies.

"Whom" is misused here. It is the subject of the verb "facilitate"; so it should take the subjective form: "who". Kelisi (talk) 07:08, 19 November 2025 (UTC)

@Kelisi: I've made the change. In future, note that each day's news box has an "Edit" link at the top right, which would have allowed you to make the correction yourself. Proposal: integrate Current Events Portal into Wikipedia app

Example design (Android)

This could make the Wikipedia app much more interesting and useful. I at least would start to use it again to browse around via its home feed.
It would also increase the use of this underrated portal which is relatively unknown with few people reading it regularly, thereby making all of your work more worth the effort (thanks for updating & maintaining this page!). Image on the right shows how it could look like.

You may be interested in this wish which I think is highly related to the Current events portal: W384: 'Articles that fit your interests & were recently edited a lot / got updated' module in the Wikipedia app (voting open).

Basically, this would enable you to see articles on things where there are some recent changes such as things about ongoing & recent events (eg got often updated a lot the last week) or for example scientific subjects you're interested in that got updated with new knowledge (eg a section was added a few weeks ago about a new subtopic). Not just any article of that sort but articles that relate to one's interests which one can configure in the Recommended Reading list's Interests page. March 2026 is blanked

Since yesterday, the page for March (which used to have the events since the first day rather than the last 7 days) is blanked, showing instead the link to month inclusion. I guess something wrong happened there. G.J.S. (talk) 18:57, 28 March 2026 (UTC)

G.J.S., thank you for the report. Could you please be more specific? Please include links to where you see an issue when reporting problems. The page Portal:Current events/March 2026 looks fine to me. —andrybak (talk) 19:45, 28 March 2026 (UTC)
Ah, I see the problem now. The page is over the post-expand include limit. There's too much content, for whatever reason. —andrybak (talk) 19:54, 28 March 2026 (UTC)
Is there a way in which I could see the raw content or is it just a matter of time until it's up again? I used to read that every day but spent a lot of time without seeing that and then found the page blanked G.J.S. (talk) 20:06, 28 March 2026 (UTC)
Checking on Special:ExpandTemplates, {{Portal:Current events/Month Inclusion|2026 February}} produces 1352 lines, ~227 KB of wikitext; whereas {{Portal:Current events/Month Inclusion|2026 March}} gives 1834, ~315 KB of wikitext. A solution would be to trim down the pages at Special:PrefixIndex/Portal:Current events/2026 March. —andrybak (talk) 20:08, 28 March 2026 (UTC)
Thank you very much. G.J.S. (talk) 20:11, 28 March 2026 (UTC)

I have made a fix without any trimming needed. Previously the content for each day was counted twice towards WP:PEIS because it was passed through a template. I transcluded the days directly instead. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:36, 28 March 2026 (UTC)
The fact that there is an intermediary template {{Portal:Current events/Month Inclusion}} causes the post-expand size to be double counted? What a weird quirk... —andrybak (talk) 20:56, 28 March 2026 (UTC)
It's documented at Help:Template limits#Nested transclusions. The main purpose of template limits is to reduce server load and I guess the server load does increase when a lot of content is passed around multiple times. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:26, 28 March 2026 (UTC)
The {{Current events}} template, used by each day's sub-page, accepts an alternative syntax that roughly halves the PEIS. It was missing from the template documentation. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:54, 29 March 2026 (UTC)
Would it be helpful if User:Cyberbot I used the alternative syntax when creating new pages? Latest example: Special:Permalink/1350471791 (2026 April 23). —andrybak (talk) 00:13, 23 April 2026 (UTC)
I think it would. I've just made some edits to take Portal:Current events/December 2024 and Portal:Current events/September 2025 out of the overflow category. I guess they've been broken for months.-- John of Reading (talk) 06:31, 23 April 2026 (UTC)
I tried contacting the bot operator: User talk:Cyberpower678/Archive 85#Request: change format for subpages of Portal:Current events. —andrybak (talk) 09:58, 10 July 2026 (UTC)
Cyberpower678, would you mind taking a look at this thread? A minor change to one of the tasks of User:cyberbot I is needed. —andrybak (talk) 21:52, 23 July 2026 (UTC)

Commonwealth Games

I find it curious that the recently-concluded 2026 Commonwealth Games, in which Australia led the medal tally, did not feature, whilst lesser-known sporting competitions (including the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, currently on the main page) recently have. Cheers, Will Thorpe (talk) 10:18, 7 August 2026 (UTC)

@Willthorpe you probably have to argue that over at the ITN talk page. Alexysun (talk) 01:54, 23 August 2026 (UTC)
Willthorpe, if you would like to see 2026 Commonwealth Games featured on the portal, the pages Portal:Current events/2026 July 23 (opening date) and Portal:Current events/2026 August 2 (closing date) are unprotected and can be edited by anyone.
Articles to be nominated for the "In the news" section of the Main Page are discussed at Wikipedia:In the news/Candidates, not here. The archived discussion about the 2026 Commonwealth Games is at Wikipedia:In the news/Candidates/July 2026#2026 Commonwealth Games.
Hope this helps. —andrybak (talk) 05:11, 23 August 2026 (UTC)
