ZDNET’s key takeaways

  • Windows 11 26H2 is now officially available.
  • The new version packages all the updates from the past year.
  • Windows 11 26H2 will also be supported for another two years.

There’s a new version of Windows in town. No, not Windows 12. I’m talking about the 2026 flavor of Windows 11, aka Windows 11 26H2. Microsoft has officially kicked off this new edition to the public per its usual schedule of launching annual updates in the second half of the year.

In a Tuesday blog post, Microsoft announced the release of version 26H2 in what it calls an “enablement package.” This means that the update is streamlined so that it installs more quickly and easily than annual Windows updates from years past. In other words, just run the update, restart your PC, and you’re in business.

There was a Windows 11 26H1, but that version was exclusive to PCs powered by Snapdragon X2 Arm chips. For now, there is no direct update path from 26H1 to 26H2. Otherwise, all other computers already running Windows 11 versions 25H2 or 24H2 should be able to snag the latest version.

Is your PC eligible?

Like most such updates, however, 26H2 is being rolled out gradually to avoid any surprises. To check on your end, head to Settings and select Windows Update. If your PC is eligible and ready, you’ll see a notice telling you that Windows 11, version 26H2 is available. Just click the Download and install link to proceed. If you don’t yet see the notice, turn on the switch to get the latest updates as soon as they’re available and then check for updates again.

You can also grab the update at Microsoft’s Download Windows 11 website. Here, you’re able to get the latest 26H2 version via the Installation Assistant, the Media Creation tool, or a downloadable ISO file. However, you may still want to wait until the update arrives via Windows Update. That’s because not all Windows 11 PCs are necessarily eligible.

Computers that could run into known compatibility issues won’t be able to snag the update. This type of snafu typically points to hardware or software incompatible with a new update. So far, Microsoft hasn’t discovered any such issues with 26H2. The few glitches that were found have since been resolved. But new problems could always arise, especially as more people start to use this latest edition.

What does Windows 11 26H2 offer and should you install it?

Version 26H2 doesn’t add any new features that haven’t already been rolled out. Rather, it’s a collection of all the monthly Windows 11 feature and security updates from the past year. If you haven’t been keeping up with the monthly updates, then you should definitely install 26H2 to bring your PC up to date.

In this case, you’ll be treated to such new features as a more customizable Start menu and taskbar, a simpler Windows Search, improvements to the Widgets app, and enhanced Windows Hello support for external fingerprint readers.

If you have been faithfully downloading each regular update, then the new version isn’t as necessary. However, you will have to update eventually. That’s because Microsoft phases out support for each annual version of Windows Pro and Home after two years. Enterprise and Education editions get 36 months.

Currently, Windows 11 23H2 is no longer supported. Version 24H2 Home and Pro edition will hit end of support on Oct. 13, 2026. Support for version 25H2 will stop on Oct. 12, 2027. But with the new 26H2 edition, you’ll be supported until Oct. 10, 2028.
