Snapplify's Africa e-Library project wins UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize 2023
In a world constantly evolving, where access to knowledge and education is paramount, the winners of the UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize 2023 have truly shone through their innovative approach to literacy promotion. Snapplify's 'Africa e-Library roject: Promoting mother-tongue literacy' is a beacon of hope and change, addressing the pressing need for literacy in our ever-changing world.
The Africa e-Library project at Snapplify was born from the urgency to tackle two major challenges. Firstly, the project recognized the immense linguistic diversity across the globe and the resulting difficulties in accessing digital educational resources. Snapplify aimed to create a solution that could provide educational content in multiple languages, making learning accessible to a wider audience.
Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of remote learning and the need for easily accessible digital resources. Snapplify sought to bridge the gap by offering an e-Library platform that enabled students to access educational materials seamlessly, even in regions with limited physical book access or during school closures.
Snapplify's project promotes mother-tongue-based literacy development in Africa by providing twenty-four seven access to engaging educational content within its e-Library. This platform empowers teachers to share thousands of free eBooks and access curriculum-aligned educational materials. It supports 11 South African languages and other African languages, such as Swahili.
Helping to build sustainable societies
Snapplify firmly believes that literacy and education are foundational for economic growth, social stability, and health. By partnering with local governments, they are actively contributing to building sustainable societies. They've already equipped over 3 million learners, partnering with 5 provincial departments within South Africa.
They collaborate with more than 1,000 local and international publishing and content partners. The Africa e-Library project's impact reaches beyond the classroom, fostering a love for reading and lifelong learning in communities.
To ensure inclusivity, Snapplify's e-Library includes features such as text-to-speech and dyslexia fonts. Their solutions are tailored to reduce data and connectivity requirements, making them practical for learners and teachers in marginalized and remote areas, without the need for elaborate infrastructure.
Snapplify's impact is evident in numerous success stories as they partner with education departments to equip thousands of schools, granting learners and educators access to digital educational resources.
Moving forward, Snapplify aims to expand its reach across the entire African continent. They seek partnerships with ministries of education, NGOs, and schools to make digital education tools accessible to all African learners, positioning them as global leaders.
On International Literacy Day, Snapplify's message is clear. Unity is the key to rewriting the future through literacy. Governments, businesses, and NGOs must join forces to bridge divides, dissolve barriers, and nurture progress through literacy. In Snapplify's words, "together, we compose a world where every individual can read, learn, and thrive."
The UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize 2023 laureate, Snapplify, serves as an inspiration and a testament to what can be achieved when dedication and innovation combine in the mission to promote literacy and education for all.
