Nancy Binay

Nancy Binay (full married name: Maria Lourdes Binay-Angeles) is the incumbent mayor of Makati City. She was a senator in the 19th Congress, serving her second and final term in 2025.

Her election to the Senate in 2013 was considered a feat by observers, given that it was her first ever bid for an elective position. Running for a national seat, she finished fifth in a race that had 12 winners. Binay, however, had been immersed in an extensive political network that made victory possible.

The oldest child of Jejomar and Elenita Binay, Nancy had served as executive assistant of her parents, who alternately served as mayor of Makati City over extended periods of time. (Her brother Jejomar Jr. also served as mayor, while sister Abigail is the incumbent.) She liaised with government agencies and local governments to which Makati extended assistance under their sisterhood agreements. From 2010 until 2013, before she ran for senator, Nancy worked with her father, who was then the vice president of the Philippines and was at the time the most popular potential presidential candidate for 2016. She would go around the country with her father, introducing her to networks that could deliver the vote.

A tourism graduate from the University of the Philippines in Diliman and a mother of four, Nancy Binay was influenced by this background in the advocacies and bills she pushed for, including the granting of expanded maternity leave, additional benefits for persons with disabilities, benefits for centenarians, and scaling up the health programs for both mother and child in the first 1,000 days of the child’s life. She has also proposed that the post of tourism officer be mandatory in local governments.

She chaired the Senate committee on tourism in the 18th Congress, and chairs the committee on sustainable development goals, innovation and futures thinking in the 19th Congress.

Binay is married to Jose Benjamin Angeles, a businessman engaged in construction and real estate.
