Photosynthesis is the process plants, algae and some bacteria use to turn light energy into chemical energy. It takes place mainly in the chloroplasts of leaf cells, where the green pigment chlorophyll absorbs mostly red and blue light. In the light-dependent reactions, which happen in the thylakoid membranes, water molecules are split, releasing oxygen as a by-product and producing ATP and NADPH. In the Calvin cycle, which takes place in the stroma, the enzyme RuBisCO fixes carbon dioxide from the air, and ATP and NADPH are used to build a three-carbon sugar that the plant turns into glucose. The overall equation is 6CO2 + 6H2O + light energy → C6H12O6 + 6O2. Light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration and temperature can all limit the rate of photosynthesis.
Where does photosynthesis take place mainly in leaf cells?
What is released as a by-product when water molecules split during the light-dependent reactions?
What role does RuBisCO have in the Calvin cycle?
