They say you can't pick your neighbours, but we’ve lucked out with ours in King’s Cross, London. In fact, we like them so much we invited some of them to a special supper, to discuss the small topic of how to stay human in an AI era, at the wonderful Heatherwick Studio;a beacon of architectural curiosity and openness. Inspired by our 19th century founder Alexandar Macmillan, who convened evenings of ‘tobacco, tipple and talk’ with some of the great thinkers of the day, we decided with our wonderful near neighbours Google and Google DeepMind to try out a modern version of this. While there was no tobacco, there was certainly plenty of talk and maybe a tipple or two as we shared stories about human ingenuity and discovery with creators, historians, researchers, and technologists - and I loved every minute of it! It was a demonstration of the enduring power of human connection, curiosity and respect for differing points of view. What was clear from the conversation was that there is so much we can learn from history about how we respond to technological change and it is more vital than ever that we stay connected to each other. This includes creating spaces for openness and discussion. If this is the sort of event to expect in the new AI.Exchange, which will be opening later this year in King’s Cross, then bring it on!
