About us

The Journalism Trust Initiative (JTI) is an international standard for news publishers, initiated at the initiative of Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and designed by 130 international experts as an ISO standard. It includes universally accepted and agreed upon excellence criteria for the identity and transparency of media outlets, for professional standards and accountability mechanisms that govern publishers' news production. The official reference document of the norm was published in December 2019 by the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) as CEN Workshop Agreement (CWA) 17493. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) defends the right of every human being to have access to free and reliable information. This right is essential to know, understand, form an opinion and take action on vital issues in full awareness, both individually and collectively. Our mission is to act for the freedom, pluralism and independence of journalism and defend those who embody these ideals. Our annual World Press Freedom Index measures the state of press freedom in 180 countries.

  • ❓ What does it take to safeguard journalism as a public good in today’s digital platform environment? That was the central question of UNESCO’s regional workshop “Safeguarding Journalism as a Public Good in the Digital Platform Environment in South East Europe”, held in Sarajevo this week. We were glad to take part on behalf of Journalism Trust Initiative and exchange with journalists, media organisations, regulators, platforms, civil society and international organisations from across South East Europe. The main focus of our conversations was on how we can build a healthier information environment for everyone. #TrustInMediaSEE A few takeaways from our participation: 🔹 Trust is part of the infrastructure of journalism: In an increasingly platform-dependent information environment, transparency and accountability are not optional extras. They are essential to making quality journalism visible and trusted. 🔹 Journalistic standards matter in the platform environment: The way journalism is identified, supported and distinguished from other content can have a direct impact on the information people encounter online. 🔹 Regulation and self-regulation need to work together: Discussions around the DSA and EMFA highlighted the importance of creating an enabling environment for independent journalism while respecting editorial independence. 🔹 Regional cooperation is key: Many of the challenges faced by media in South East Europe are shared across borders, and so are many of the opportunities to address them. 🔹 Public-interest journalism needs practical support: Safeguarding journalism is not only about principles. It also means building mechanisms, standards and incentives that can strengthen trustworthy journalism in the digital ecosystem. • 🤔 What does it actually take to go through the Journalism Trust Initiative? Think of it as 3 steps — each building on the one before it. And the bigger goal: making trust demonstrable. 1️⃣ Understand the standard JTI looks beyond the stories a newsroom publishes. It examines how the organisation works: editorial independence, fact-checking, corrections, complaints, transparency, staff safety and more. The first step is understanding what the standard asks — and why these processes matter for trust. 2️⃣ Evaluate yourself The self-assessment is where the real organisational work begins. With 130 questions covering practically every aspect of a media outlet's work, the newsroom looks at what is already in place and where the gaps are. The goal isn't to get a perfect score. It's to understand where you are — and what needs to change. The key questions are simple: – Does the procedure exist? – Is it documented? – Is it actually applied? – Can we prove it? 3️⃣ Go through the external audit This is where the newsroom's policies and procedures meet independent verification. And having a document isn't enough. JTI follows a “tell and show” principle: tell the auditor what you do, and show evidence that it works in practice. The result is more than a certificate. It's a newsroom with clearer processes, stronger accountability and a more solid foundation for earning and maintaining public trust. #JTI #JournalismTrustInitiative #Journalism #MediaTrust #Transparency #Accountability #IndependentMedia

  • Journalism Trust Initiative (JTI) is looking to strengthen its presence in 🇨🇿 Czechia and 🇸🇰 Slovakia — and we are looking for someone who can help make that happen. JTI, initiated by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), provides an international framework for news organisations to demonstrate transparency, professional standards and accountability. More than 2,600 media outlets across 130+ countries now participate in the initiative. In Czechia, the JTI already has a strong foundation. Economia became the first Czech news organisation to obtain JTI certification in 2024, followed by Czech Radio (Český rozhlas), whose certification in 2025 made it the 13th public broadcaster worldwide to receive the JTI certificate. Now, the next step is to build on that momentum across both Czech and Slovak media landscapes. We are looking for a JTI Representative to: ✅ develop relationships with media outlets and partners ✅ grow the JTI network in both countries ✅ support news organisations throughout the JTI process, from self-assessment to certification ✅ organise workshops, seminars and other outreach activities ✅ create new opportunities to discuss transparency, accountability and trust in journalism ✅ connect the regional media community with the international JTI team. ℹ️ This is a six-month, part-time freelance opportunity, based in Czechia or Slovakia. We are particularly looking for someone with strong connections across the Czech and Slovak media sectors, professional experience in journalism or the news industry, and fluency in English plus the national languages of both countries. Submit your CV and cover letter, both in English, to recrutement-jti@rsf.org. Application deadline: October 7, 2026. If you know the media landscape in Czechia and Slovakia and want to help build a stronger culture of transparency and trust in journalism, we would love to hear from you. #JournalismTrustInitiative #JTI #Journalism #MediaTrust #MediaTransparency #Czechia #Slovakia #Disinformation #PressFreedom #RSF

  • 🤳 Who decides what journalism gets seen online? Platform rules, algorithms and content moderation shape the visibility and circulation of news. That makes transparency and accountability in digital platform governance essential for media freedom. Supported by the UNESCO, new multi-stakeholder recommendations for five Western Balkan countries address exactly this challenge, calling for: 🔎 More transparency around content moderation and algorithmic ranking ⚖️ Effective mechanisms to appeal platform decisions 🗣️ Local-language and contextual expertise ✍ Stronger safeguards for journalistic content 👐 Regulation aligned with human rights standards They also underline the importance of recognising media that meet professional, ethical and transparency standards — an area where the Journalism Trust Initiative can play a role. The goal isn't simply better platforms. It's a digital information environment where quality journalism can remain visible, trusted and sustainable. #TrustInMediaSEE #MediaFreedom #DigitalGovernance #Journalism #MediaTrust #WesternBalkans

  • 6262 is now JTI certified! A new milestone for 6262, part of Має Сенс, which has successfully completed the Journalism Trust Initiative (JTI) certification process, an international standard for trustworthy journalism. This certification demonstrates 6262’s commitment to transparency, professional standards and editorial integrity, in a particularly challenging context for the team. “Obtaining JTI certification at a time when our team is working remotely and our hometown of Sloviansk is under threat every day is a true testament to our resilience.” 6262 becomes the second media outlet from Має Сенс to achieve JTI certification, following 0372. Congratulations to the entire team on this achievement! 👏
