What do we hope this challenge will show? A good score on old data is not the same as a forecast you can rely on. Conditions in space change all the time. For three months, every Benchlab model is checked against new solar wind observations as they arrive. We are looking at more than accuracy: are the results reproducible, and does the workflow keep running reliably, day after day? The results will show which approaches hold up under real operating conditions, and how forecast skill changes from one hour ahead to three days ahead. Live evaluation starts 19 November. May the best model win. Watch this short video from Dr Enrico Camporeale below and find out more at https://fdl.ai/benchlab #Benchlab #FDLAI #SolarWind #SpaceWeather #MachineLearning

Artificial intelligence for space for all humankind.
About us
The Frontier Development Lab (FDL.AI) brings PhD and post-doc researchers from the cutting-edge of AI and data science, and teams them up with their counterparts from the space sector for an intensive eight-week research sprint, based on a range of challenge areas. The results far exceed what any individual could develop in the same time period, or even in years of individual research. FDL applies AI technologies to space science, to push the frontiers of research and develop new tools to help solve some of the biggest challenges that humanity faces. These range from the affects of climate change to predicting space weather, from improving disaster response, to identifying meteorites that could hold the key to the history of our universe. FDL is a public-private partnership with space agencies and commercial partners such as Google Cloud and Nvidia who provide expertise and the computing resources necessary for rapid experimentation and iteration in data intensive areas. We have established an impressive success rate for research output over accelerated time periods over the time since we launched the Frontier Development Lab. Research papers are regularly accepted to respected journals, presented at scientific conferences (in both AI and space science domains) and have been featured in multiple media outlets. FDL.AI is an initiative of Trillium Technologies and leaders in commercial AI such as Google Cloud and Nvidia. www.trillium.tech

A huge thank you to Scan Computers and the wonderful team: James Gorbold, Glyn Merga, Thomas B., Harry Bloxham, and Elliot Fishwick for making the work possible. Scan Computers have shared an update from the Lunarlab Technical Showcase, to read please see here: https://lnkd.in/edVmbAXy
Travel with me once again, planning our trip together to the Moon in 2028. The space scientists at FDL Lunarlab have been exploring the potential of #AI to map the lunar south pole and plan our itinerary, including critical-considerations to avoid a bad day such as surface hazards, proximity between different sites, shadowing and line-of-sight communication issues. Proud to be part of the team at Scan Computers supporting space research in association with Frontier Development Lab (FDL), NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Luxembourg Space Agency European Space Resources Innovation Centre (ESRIC) and NVIDIA. What makes Benchlab different? Most benchmarks test models on the past. Benchlab tests them on the future. From 19 November, submitted workflows run live, forecasting ambient solar wind speed 72 hours ahead using only the information available at the time they run. Every six hours, for three months, each workflow fetches the public data it needs and makes its forecast in a controlled environment. Models are frozen before the run starts. No retuning, no hindsight: what is tested is exactly what was submitted. May the best model win. Watch this short video from Dr Enrico Camporeale below and find out more at https://fdl.ai/benchlab

A note on International Climate Action Day today. #climate action 350.org In late 2009 we ran a bold experiment in London called ‘CineForum: The road to Ecotopia’ - with the legendary Jobeda Ali, John Elkington, Hunter Lovins, John Grant, Diane Abbot, David Wasdell and many other friends, heroes and luminaries. The Ecotopia project was inspired by NASA’s James Hansen and colleagues and their landmark paper, Target Atmospheric CO2: where should humanity aim? Using paleoclimate data and models they identified 350 parts per million (ppm) as the absolute safe upper CO2 limit the atmosphere can absorb before additional feedbacks accelerate the climate system beyond our ability to manage it. This is sometimes called a ‘Tipping Point’. Inspired by the same 350 ppm paper, the advocacy organization, 350.org (led by author Bill McKibbon) founded the International Day of Climate Action (Today!), which was inaugurated on the 24th of October 2009 with the intention to mobilize grassroots pressure ahead of the COP. We’ve always felt a kindred connection with the 350.org movement, sharing the same spark of creation. So, on this day of climate action 17 years later, I thought it would be good to share a little bit on how our thinking has evolved since then. To bring it to life, we made a little film to show how we envision Ecotopia now. Everything that follows is based on FDL.ai / Trillium research.FDL.ai / Trillium research. (There's some sci-fi in here, but the vast majority is peer reviewed science.) https://trillium.tech/intelligence-age-edition/tipping-point

Traditional benchmarking has hit a wall. Complex models can bend reality to fit by tuning parameters until they match historical data perfectly. Benchlab Live is a new kind of AI tournament that tests models against live, unseen data. The first iteration of Benchlab Live will centre around space weather, teams will build models that are evaluated live against future solar wind observations. Having models predict the unknown (and ‘impossible to know’) will help unlock true operational capability and gives us a unique insight into how artificial intelligence can help us rethink how we forecast space weather. How do we make the most of the explosion AI models and merge the best bits together? This is the exact question the Mixture of Earths (MoEarths) team is tackling as part of the FDL Earth Systems Lab 2026. Inspired by a mixture of experts, the team has been building a context-conditioned fusion approach to combine both geospatial and general foundation models. This journey has revealed many open questions, including how best to assess the coverage and complementarity of embeddings, and how to merge these to make a difference downstream. If you are interested in what the frontier of AI looks like, join us August 7 for our Frontier Development Lab (FDL) Earth Systems Lab AI SOTA (State Of The Art) Showcase. Every year at FDL (Frontier Development Lab (FDL)) I wonder "can we do it again"? 🤖 🌏 This year we set some really hard problems with crucial implications for #AI4good 🌳 1. Can we understand the living dynamics of our rainforests? 🧠 2. Can we merge models to create a deeper understanding? ⛈️ 3. And can we predict if a cyclone will weaken or intensify? The good news is that, yes, we can :) Join us this Friday at 2.00 CET and 1.00pm BST for an epic showcase of SOTA in applied AI. https://eslab.ai/live Thanks to our friends at European Space Agency - ESA and Scan Computers for supporting this research.
Destructive tropical cyclones transform from mild to monsters overnight 🌀 As weather forecasting improves using both traditional and AI approaches, accurate modeling of rapid intensifications remains elusive.
