Finally got my Platinum last week! 🏆

The Ultima Weapon made a huge difference for the last fight. Shit that battle was intense because you get punished hard for mistakes, took me about 3 tries.
I love how you say 3 tries like that’s a lot.

Emerald Weapon in FF7 took me about 300 tries back in 1997.

I am 75% done and have died once.
Yeah they forgot to include the challenge. People say “it’s because they want you to see the story”. But in the old games the story was your reward for playing the game, not the only reason you turned on your console.

I am playing the game fpr the boss battles. All of the missions that do not have to with Clive are almost worth skipping. The boss battles are where it is at.

All the back end side quests are worth doing and I'd say the overwhelming majority in the second half are. The first half they have a lot of duds for the side quests almost like an introduction. The structure of them never change so if you don't care about character development/story then skip then. I don't know why you'd play FFXVI though as that's the greatest strength to the game. Side quests remind me of Witcher 3 on the second half. More fleshed out but same boring structure for each one. TW3's was obviously better though.

That's the flaw with the side quests in FFXVI. They never change structure. It's the same flaw TW3 had but it was more forgiving in TW3 because they were like fleshed out main stories. FFXVI isn't quite that fleshed out but it does get significantly better on the later end.

I love how you say 3 tries like that’s a lot.

Emerald Weapon in FF7 took me about 300 tries back in 1997.
None of the FFs are challenging even the earlier ones, imo. There's only FFs that are more challenging than the others but it's not like we're comparing a huge gap here in difficulty spikes.

This doesn't really hurt FFXVI in my opinion because I've never played a FF game where I thought it had challenging content. At best you'd get an optional boss that might press you a little more but it was far from challenging. Emerald Weapon is a joke. As with almost every RPG it comes down to just understanding the mechanics. In party-based it's always about team compositions, synergy, exploiting progression systems, etc. I wouldn't consider that challenging when it's nothing more than information digest to play optimal or grinding that makes you one-shot bosses.

If we're including the MMOs then I'd agree, that's where you get challenging. You couldn't even solo anything in XI without someone helping you. Some of the savage content in FFXIV synced up is very challenging and quite punishing on mechanics. What makes these challenging though is you're forced to rely on other players so you can't carry anyone. One person slipping up means a raid wipe on certain encounters. Not syncing though, is a different story so you can definitely make an argument FFXIV doesn't have challenging content. But you'll be forced to sync at some point so it seems irrelevant.

FFXI though, was easily the most challenging FF game. You could not even step outside towns without getting dirt napped.

Not gonna lie, ever since I completed it and uninstalled it from m PS5 - I have been missing the game a little. Despite its numerous flaws, it was still a fun game to play.

I've been bumping this the past week just to get a taste. Think I'll leave it on repeat for a few hours.

Beat this game a few weeks ago - like to give some games some time before I rate them. This was a 7.5 or 8.0 game for me. It's very good, not great. It is, however, leagues better than FF13 or 15, so we're at least on the right track:

Story - story was very good, although it has the typical really fast start followed by a relatively less interesting middle that thankfully picks up again near the end. Really enjoyed what they did with the dominants/eikons here, making them central to the story.

Characters - Clive is definitely the best protagonist since at least FFX IMO. Actually wish we saw more of certain side characters.

Battle system - not what I typically like, but I will admit it was fun and you could make it varied depending on your eikon preferences.

Soundtrack - I really don't get the positive feedback on the soundtrack that this thread mostly has. It's fine, for sure, and I really love spanish guitar, so that helps. But putting this up against the classic soundtracks of 7-10 (and even some of 13)? Completely different planets of quality IMO.

Sidequests - I had no problem with the sidequests. They are mostly fetch-quest type in terms of execution, but at least they provide context to the world and certain characters. 80% of them were at least somewhat interesting.

It's your opinion and they say opinions are like asses [face_mischief]

Most FF fans love Soken and will tell you there was no better replacement for Uematsu than him. Uematsu handpicked him and that's why he let Soken handle even his composed pieces in FFXIV which eventually he just gave the entire project to him. He's very close to if not on par with Uematsu. FFXVI has many themes that are homage to Uematsu soundtracks. I don't get this critique. Sounds like it's not your thing and that's okay.

I can think of 6 tracks right off the top of my head that are homage to old FF games just like he does consistently in FFXIV.

Soken's music is god tier. You don't have to like his style but he's a living love letter for FF fans. I could criticize SE for many things but when it comes to composers they have a monopoly on the best ones in Japan. I love Octopath Traveler's composer too. SE has always had an amazing sound department.

I mean that’s fine and may be true, but 6 tracks that pay homage to earlier games while FF7,8 and 10 are full of original bangers left and right isn’t the ringing endorsement you thought. Again, the soundtrack was fine, it just wasnt game defining like the others imo.

This game is so much fun.

I've beat every quest i've come across up to the story point i'm at. I just increased potion carrying size for the first time.

My group just split up, with me headed to the next monthercrystal to destroy!

Then after i destroy it i might knock out two more hunts to hit the 10 trophy.

I've thought about platinuming it... second play through seems like a lot but i'd focus just the story... and beating a boss without taking damage seems a bit rough for me. I thinkkkk the rest seems doable.

This game burnt me out of gaming for a month lol

I just can't get myself to play "Final Fantasy Mode"

What is Final Fantasy Mode?

I've been enjoying the game so much I've been thinking I might take a crack at the Platinum and make it my third one... The boss part seems hard and replaying a second time seems like a bit much. but I could see it since i've been doing every side quest up until now anyhow.

When you start New Game Plus, you can access Final Fantasy difficulty. It's not tough really... The first playthrough should have been this way in the first place tbh.

It raises the level cap to 100. You carry over your abilities and equipment, which you can upgrade further. The Ultima Weapon (not Götterdämmerung) can be obtained towards the end. Enemies are tankier, supoosedly more difficult and their placements are changed up a bit. There might be more I am missing. Oh and there's also Ultimaniac Mode if you want to go even further!

I am still slowly trudging my way through NG+. Just beat dragon boi Bahamut. I wanna +1 my Genji Gloves but that would mean doing side stuff again ugh.

Alright so if i'm going for the platinum my abilities and ability points carry over and i can gather more ability points to max all of them out??

Usually i don't play a game twice for platinum, i only have 3 plats, but when it's a game i truly love I enjoy doing platinum as my nod to such a great game. (stupid i know but it's my thing now).

I've been doing every side quest since i started, and i just beat Bahamut. Amazing story. So fun.

Yeah they carry over and you can gather more points.

I don't think it's stupid to get platinums that way. 👍

The Bahamut fight felt so Dragon Ball Z to me. Badass.

Finally finished the game this weekend. Hell of a ride. Of course, I went digging for people's thoughts afterwards and was surprised to see that a lot of people didn't like the ending? I thought it was great. At any rate, I like this direction for FF. Would play a similar future game.

It's no surprise to me to see how many people hated the ending because it was so depressing. Gamers can't handle mature endings that are also strongly ambiguous. I liked it too. This is why we always get boring ass happily ever after endings. People wanted to see Jill running around with Clive's children. Perhaps this is a possibility due to the ambiguity behind it you make the ending how you want it. The writing stayed perfect to all the themes established in this game so I felt the ending was a good fit towards it.

I would say this game has the best protagonist in the entire IP which is saying a lot. My only gripe with this game's story is you can tell they cut huge sections out that were intended for Jill which is why her character feels less fleshed out. The entire northern section in the game where she's from was cut.

I would say this game absolutely has a top 5 best story in the entire IP but possibly top 3. Would have to really think about this as it's hard to top some FF stories like FFT and FFVI. As a collection overall - especially characters and gameplay - I think FFVI and FFT were better for sure. I'd argue Clive is best protagonist in the IP though. By the end of the game I wasn't super high on the gameplay anymore. It has a lot of core issues and really the strength to this game is the story/characters not really the gameplay unfortunately.

So there is this one piece of musical score that I encountered several times when exploring the fields of Sanbreque. It was more electronic in nature and I believe takes the place of the standard score after you reach a story moment in the game.

I ask, because it reminded me a LOT of a piece of music from Mass Effect 2 and got me really nostalgic for that game. But when scrubbing through the FF16 sound track I can't find that piece of music.

Anyone recall what it is and where to find it?

Played the DLC over the weekend. It was pretty cool.

That Omega fight at the end was absolutely bonkers. I've been out of practice with combat and wasn't as sharp as I was when I Platted it, so I shamefully activated the automatic dodge ring just so I could enjoy the DLC's story without too much fuss.

I realized how much I actually missed playing this game, despite my problems with it. Even after I finished the DLC I played it for like another hour so just to spend some more time with the characters/combat. Bring on Leviathan!

After spending some time with Avatar I have a new found appreciation for my time with this game. I was maybe a little too harsh on the game in certain ways, maybe because everything I played leading up to it was top tier. Think I'll have to boost my opinion of the game to "very good". Because I did in fact very much like most of what this game had to offer.

Don't think I'll get on board with the DLC. But I might actually go back and NG+ the side content that I missed at some point in the not too distant future.

i agree with deuce here. the side quests may not be the most exciting at times, but they really fill out the story and characters. i never felt bored doing them.
As someone who played the game primarily for the story, I had no issues with the side quests. I thought they all added some degree of story depth that was worth pursuing. Enjoyed them just fine.

I wanna eventually beat this game. I feel this game could be a GOTY contender if it was more challenging. It's so easy that It actually detracts from the game. I hope they release a patch that increases difficulty at some point.

I'm playing FF7 Remake now and the difficulty is just right. It makes the combat much more enjoyable and rewarding.

7 remake hard mode was nuts. Hope rebirth has something like it

Pretty cool, probably will be a while before I get to it. With both ff rebirth, dragons dogma 2 to play and stellar blade shortly after this, I just don't have time but the game was fun enough, I Will play this eventually. Of course having leviathan would be cool, but I doubt I would replay the game just to use him. Seems like this would have been better used as earlier dlc that combined with your game like the dlc for horizon zero dawns did.

If they ever release a patch to make this game a little more challenging, I'll give it another shot. I wish it had the difficulty of Remake and Rebirth. Those games aren't extremely hard or anything, but you definitely need to be on your toes and it's possible to die multiple times to an enemy or boss. In FFXVI, I feel like I was never even close to dying. It made the gameplay really boring to me.

This is a really beefy game. I made it to chapter 9 and did most of the open world side quests, but then traveled back to Junon and there's a ton of side activities I haven't done there. I feel like I played about the same amount as the first game in just 9 chapters and I'm only about halfway through the story.

Loving every bit of this game though. I hope they can make the third part in less than 4 years by reusing assets.

EDIT: ah, numbnuts. I meant to post this in the FF7 thread.

In KH3, I was literally posting on here with the controller in my other hand mashing X and triangle during a boss fight and i won. Square needs to work on their difficulty settings or let hard be available at the start.

The team that works on the FF7 remakes knows good gameplay and difficulty. The other teams need to take some pointers from them.

You can't do that in Rebirth or you'll get plowed. At least not on normal difficulty you can't. The enemy encounters are also too nuanced to allow this.

14 team pretty amazing too
Some of that team worked on XVI. Not all of them but it did have a chunk of that development team. Different roles though. Like Yoshi didn't direct the game he produced it. Probably would've ended up a better game if he directed it. But yeah, the FFXIV team is my personal favorite FF team. The MMO is extremely good.

Over the years that team has made FFXII, Vagrant Story, FFXI, FFXIV, FFXVI, and Final Fantasy Tactics. All great games.

The Leviathan fight in Rising Tide is complete BS, specifically the barrier phase.

Was enjoying the DLC and was having fun jumping back into that world up until that moment. It killed my enjoyment of it.
