The Official Elden Ring Discussion Thread

>Information

(courtesy of IGN and Wikipedia)

>Setting

  • Elden Ring takes place in a brand new world, not connected to the lands from Dark Souls or Bloodborne. It is a large kingdom known as The Lands Between, and unlike previous Fromsoftware games, it will be a large open world.
  • The most striking aspect of The Lands Between is the large golden tree that can be seen from almost all areas, and it is known as the Erdetree, which is reminiscent of Yggdrasil, the World Tree. It is said that the Elden Ring was the source of the Erdtree, before it was shattered.
  • Not everyone was welcome in The Lands Between. A group known as The Golden Order once exiled many people from these lands, and they became known as The Tarnished. Now, with the Elden Ring shattered and The Golden Order broken, The Tarnished (you, the player) have returned to The Lands Between to seek out the Elden Ring.
  • While it is not yet known how the Elden Ring was broken, it has been revealed that its fragments are now kept by the remnants of the Golden Order, demigods, who have used its power to wage a great war. It is the quest of The Tarnished to recover these Elden Ring shards, the Great Runes, and become an Elden Lord themselves.
  • While the main goal of your character appears to be fueled by returning from exile to become an Elden Lord, Miyazaki has hinted that your reasons and actions for doing so can be shaped by the player, and may configure into how you will interact with various NPCs, and perhaps even choose an ending.
  • These demigods are the offspring of the Queen of The Lands Between, Queen Marika the Eternal.
  • Much of the worldbuilding, background story, and character stories were written by author George R. Martin, along with Fromsoftware Director Hidetaka Miyazaki.
  • Certain regions, like the starting area of Limgrave, appear to be littered with large ruins that have seemingly fallen from the sky.

>Combat and Gameplay

  • Certain mechanics from previous Soulsborne games will be returning, including Dark Souls stamina bars, summoning, some of Sekiro's basic stealth actions and dedicated jump button, as well as weapon arts (no longer just tied to specific weapons).
  • While the stamina bar is back, Miyazaki has stated that they feel it has "less influence on the player overall", to help contribute to the level of freedom Elden Ring offers. This means that stamina will not diminsh outside of combat, so you can sprint on foot or horseback indefininetly until attacked
  • Elden Ring will have summonable co-op play, however, players can also summon AI Spirits to help them out.
  • These Spirits are based on enemies you will encounter, and come in many forms, including animals and humanoids that can fulfill certain roles your character might be lacking (melee or ranged support).
  • Like spells, Spirits cost FP to summon, and certain Spirits come in groups, or cost more the more powerful the ally is.
  • Spirits can also be increased in power, and there are many to choose from - and you are able to find and choose which ones you want to assist you.
  • Spirits can only be summoned in certain areas, noted by a glowing grave-like icon that appears on the left side of the screen
  • While Dark Souls featured weapons with specific arts, Elden Ring will feature around 100 different skills that can be found and collected as you explore the open world, called Ashes of War.
  • These skills can be customized to tailor your build as you see fit, and will not be limited to certain weapon pairings.
  • Ashes of War also allow you to customize your weapon scaling to better suit your build, though you can simply equip a skill without having to assign new scaling too.
  • Each weapon can have a single skill assigned to it, but the skill can be swapped out as needed to help experiment with your playstyle.
  • Certain weapons will have unique skills that cannot be exchanged.
  • Certain enemies can fight on horseback just like you can, and may be better suited to fighting them on a mount of your own. You can target the enemy or its mount to try and dismount it.
  • You can perform a dismounting attack from horseback to launch yourself into a group of enemies.
  • While mounted, you can cast spells, or swing your weapon to the right with RT, or the left with LT
  • As you might expect, spears and lance weapons excel on horseback, as you can joust and pierce enemies as you ride past them.
  • There are patrols of enemies who can carry treasures and materials, and they can even be seen carrying these chests to indicate wealth.
  • Many encampments feature enemies with large horns, and they will sound an alarm if they spot you, triggering all nearby enemies to converge on their location.
  • Stealth actions are limited but viable, allowing you to crouch down to reduce noise and visibility and try to ambush enemies. You can even crouch down to hide in tall grass.
  • Players can craft sleep bombs or arrows to quietly put sentries to sleep, where they can be bypassed or hit with a visceral attack.
  • At night, it will be easier to use stealth mechanics to ambush enemies, but visibility will also be reduced.

>Multiplayer
  • Co-op is confirmed to support up to 4 players.
  • It should now be easier to play with others, and you may not need to obtain specific items like in other From Software games.
  • Players can only invade another person's world if a co-op partner has already been summoned, meaning those who choose to play alone won't have to worry about being ambushed.
  • New interface elements have been added when joining another player's world to help navigate and team up.
  • Due to the nature of its large open world, there will be specific places that a player can call out for summon, making it easier to see where people need help.
  • Players can form specific groups to help out with friends in their open worlds, without having strangers ruin things.
  • PVP will be enabled in Elden Ring, even in the large open worlds of The Lands Between.
  • However, mounted combat will not be possible when summoning other players to fight against.

>Stats

Before you pick your class, it's helpful to understand what each stat and attribute does, as certain classes will start with higher values in some categories than others.
  • Vigor - Governs Maximum HP, Fire Resistance, and Poison Immunity
  • Mind- Governs Maximum FP, and Focus-related resistance
  • Endurance - Governs Stamina, affects Physical Defense Power, and Robustness
  • Strength - Governs Attack Power to Strength-scaling weapons, increases Equipment Load, and is required for wearing Heavy Armor
  • Dexterity - Governs Attack Power to Dexterity-scaling weapons, reduces Casting Time and chance to be dismounted, softens Fall Damage, and is required to wield certain advanced weapons
  • Intelligence - Required to cast Glintstone Sorceries, boosts Attack Power of Magic-scaling weapons, and improved Magical Resistance
  • Faith - Required to cast Incantations (including Holy and Fire-based Spells), boots Magical damage that scales with Faith
  • Arcane - Governs Item Discovery, and effects Death Resistance and resistance to certain spells

>Classes

Warrior
The Warrior Class is a fast and agile melee-focused class that relies on dexterity over strength. Comparable to Dark Souls 3's Mercenary, the Warrior favors offense over defense, and starts with dual swords and fairly light armor to maximize stamina usage and dodging over blocking. However, the addition of a buckler allows the Warrior to easily parry oncoming attacks before following up with swift strikes. The Warrior suffers from low magical attributes, preferring melee over casting whenever possible.

Enchanted Knight
The Enchanted Knight is a heavily armored hybrid role that blends sword (or spear) and sorcery. This class can handle bulkier armor than others, and is capable of blocking melee attacks and magical projectiles alike. The Enchanted Knight can adapt to their adversaries by launching powerful magical piercing attacks, or switching a spear to trample enemies on horseback - though they'll have a harder time investing in healing incantations.

Prophet
The Prophet may look deceptively frail with a low health pool and ragged robes for armor, but is bolstered by a slew of holy incantations at the ready that they can interchange between surprisingly hefty swings from their club. The Prophet excels at using their high faith to cloak themselves in both defensive and offensive holy spells, and can expend a great deal of FP either on spells or powerful weapon skills, so long as they don't leave themselves vulnerable to attack.

Champion
The Champion is another hybrid class that deals in physical and magical damage alike - much like Dark Souls 3's Pyromancer class. The Champion benefits from an emphasis in both raw melee power and faith-based fire magic, and can act as a glass cannon of sorts, able to smash into enemies with roaring fire and strong attacks, but will likely need to stay mobile with light armor, as their low stamina and FP pool means they can easily over-extend themselves early if not careful, and lowered dexterity can slow their casting speed.

Bloody Wolf
The Bloody Wolf is sought by those who favor raw physical power. Able to wade deep into physical combat with impressive strength backed by a high health pool, they'll be able to wield most armor and weapons with ease. A lower FP pool and lacking magical attributes means most Bloody Wolf characters will likely avoid investing in sorceries or incantations - preferring to swap between different melee weapons or bows to deal with new adversaries.

I have to say the new trailer looks awesome. I don't know if I'm going to be able to say no. There is just something about the atmosphere of these games that I like even if they kick my butt. There are a fair number of games coming out that I'm getting but none have this same atmosphere. Plus it's always more fun to play the games when people are talking about them. You always feel like you are out of the loop when you play them later. Plus I like the freedom of movement they are giving you to just say heck this area is too rough now, I'll come back later when I've hopefully got stronger and better. In reality, I've never regretted buying the games I did other than maybe demons souls remake cause for me it just seemed harder than the other games. Very nice looking though.

It's amazing to me how even the imitators/emulators are unable to capture or replicate the kind of atmosphere and world building that From nails every single time after over a decade to get it right.

The creativity of From is off the scale...
Those are areas I will wait the longest to go to.
According to Miyazaki, there are several this time, so it may not be that easy to avoid...

Yea I know. We don't really know just how big the world is so I'm hoping it's huge just so swamps while plentiful will still make a small part. I went through the swamp area in dark souls and never ventured there again. What the heck.

After Bloodborne spoiled me with its speed and encouraged aggressive mechanics, I will go with the class that is the most agile. Bloody wolf seems to talk more to me, though champion could also be interesting. I am curious to see how open world is implemented, whether it makes the game any easier and what quality of life features are there. Dark Souls II is my least favorite, but its quality of life features are better than even my favorite game of them all, Bloodborne.

You'd be surprised how abysmally slow Bloodborne really is.

After playing Returnal for dozens of hours, Souls games in general move like molasses.

Returnal is how I dial in my reflexes for other games now...

That's a completely different genre and not really applicable. That said, as much as I dislike the genre, i concur that Returnal controls like a dream.

I'm not sure what class to go with. I want my character to be more agile and quicker. I'm also thinking of doing a build that incorporates magic. I haven't done that in a souls game before cause I prefer using swords, I've just read that it can make the games a little easier. Choices I guess.

It's 100% applicable.

I'm not suggesting the games are similar in any way. They are not.

However, Returnal is so much more fast paced than Bloodborne is that it increases your responsiveness to threats. By playing Returnal, you dial up your reflexes. Then going to a game like Bloodborne, it plays much slower by comparison and you can respond to its action with a much clearer head.

Try it out. Play Returnal for a couple hours then go to Bloodborne. The latter seems almost like stop motion after surviving Returnal for a little while. Makes it much easier to play...

Sorry, but nothing you said makes the comparison applicable. Might as well compare Wipeout to Bloodborne, because why not by your logic.

You aren't engaging with and dispatching enemies in Wipeout.

It's fine if you don't get it, but let's not get silly.

Give it a try and tell me how you feel or maybe you're just not the kind of person that can calibrate in this manner.

RDR2 and Max Payne 3 made me better at other shooters. Returnal makes me better at slower paced games like Bloodborne.

Any game that is more challenging and nuanced makes games with simpler mechanics and slower paced action easier to engage with.

I came straight from playing nothing but Returnal to Bloodborne and I was far more skilled at the latter than I was before playing Returnal because I functioned at a higher level thanks to the fast paced action of the former.

Even physics dictates this principle to an extent. The closer you come to the speed of light, the more time slows down. To a lesser extent, the faster you move, the slower everything else seems around you. Playing challenging, fast paced games makes other games seem less challenging and slower.

But do you... [face_peace]

I suppose this can be true to an extent. I learned better techniques as I was playing the faster paced Bloodborne that helped me with the slowest paced Dark Souls II. Prior to beating Bloodborme, some Dark Souls II bosses seamed impossible. Then I applied what I learned in Bloodborne to Dark Souls II and it seems like this time around I will 100% this game.

The difference I wanted to point out is that Bloodborne and Dark Souls II are cousins of the same basic play mechanics, same genre and same studio. Returnal is something completely different. Even at the basic mechanics level, Returnal is a bullet hell 3D shooter whose mechanics don't translate well to hack & slash RPGs. But if it helped you, then it is possible that it could help someone else too.

Extremely excited!

I've always gone naked for the first playthrough of Souls games, so for Elden Ring I'll be a Wretch.

However I will admit that I was tempted by the rumoured Samurai class. Hmm...

Dan Tack played one character for a 10-hour session

The intro cinematic has not been revealed. It is NOT the cinematic we have seen featuring the Snow Witch (aka Storyteller).
The intro is classic Souls. Shows characters you will meet, including the "Loathsome Dung Eater"
Starting classes: Vagabond - Warrior - Hero - Bandit - Astrologer - Prophet - Samurai - Prisoner - Intelligencer
One of these starting classes is like the 'Deprived'
There are starting gifts
Tutorial is in a different area from Closed Network Test. Classic souls tutorial. Wake up, get killed by a boss named 'Grafted Scion', then spawn into CNT starting cave in Limgrave
The game is noticeably more difficult than CNT and its loot has been changed
He did not notice any UI changes
He heavily emphasizes how different the game feels without the CNT boundaries- with the freedom to go in any direction. Hard to predict expected difficulty
Limgrave is 3x the size of CNT, rest of it does have diversity compared to CNT portion.
Stormveil Castle is huge, nonlinear. has vertical exploration with jumping. densely packed with dangerous foes compared with open field. can be skipped
Map fragment locations are marked even on the blank map
Lots of story and characters. Met 15-20 NPCs. and they're more complex than in Souls
Different zones have entirely different aesthetics, atmospheres, physical layouts and enemy designs.

His starting gift was the Stonesward Key. (He thinks it could be like Pharros Lockstones from Dark Souls 2.) It can be used on the imp statue in the starting cave to unlock a dungeon full of traps and giant automated chariots on tracks.
He killed the Stonedigger Troll boss in Limgrave Tunnels who dropped his hammer (different drop from CNT). Its Skill was a shout that damaged and pushed back enemies.
There are poison swamps
There are NPC invaders
Dungeons are far more diverse compared with CNT. Mini dungeons are plentiful
Found many components to mix in the Flask of Wondrous Physick
Paintings are items that show a place somewhere in the world. if you find the location depicted, you can find the spirit of the artist
The "Pot Boys" can be enemies, large and small versions. Alexander the Iron Fist is still friendly and found in Limgrave, but did not move to hub
Margit the Fell is "nothing compared to Godrick". he drops an additional talisman slot (like rings from Dark Souls). Game begins with one talisman slot
NPC named D, an Undead Hunter, in East Limgrave who marked his map with places to meet the Beast Clergy. D tells him about an undead village that has been taken over by a Mariner. After clearing the village, D will go to the hub.
The ability to summon spirits is given by the Snow Witch
Spirit summons can be upgraded by Roderika the spirit tuner. She will go to hub when found
Patches and the Moonlight Greatsword are back
Desert/badlands region with a blood-red sun east of Limgrave.
An NPC told him about Castle Mourne, an optional mid-sized level in southern Limgrave, on the Weeping Peninsula. Boss is named Leonine Half-breed
Additional Flasks of Crimson Tears can be acquired by locating Minor Erdtrees around the world, which have Golden Seeds. number of seeds required per flask starts at 1 and increases.
In southern Limgrave, he found a tiny building with an elevator that goes very far down. There is an entire massive realm underground called the Eternal City. Purple and 'meteoric'. He didn't get far before Bandai told him to leave.
Found a different Evergaol from the one in CNT, but fought the same boss (Bloodhound Knight Darriwil)
NPC Kenneth Haight. gives quest to go recover his fort from enemies. once you clear the fort, the enemies vanish for good and Kenneth moves in there.
A bridge by Stormveil with a portal that takes you to the Divine Tower of Limgrave high above the world. Requires two Crescent Seals to progress

Godrick the Grafted: (actual name on boss health bar)
- first critical boss of the game. main boss of Stormveil Castle. not required to defeat to progress to a different area
- huge, complex moveset. few openings. very difficult. killed his spirit summon in 1 hit.
- drops 'Remembrance of Godrick' (probably his 'boss soul') and a Great Rune as he is a critical boss.

Field Boss: Bone Beckoner Mariner
- Takes place in a shallow lake near the village D mentioned. The boss is in a boat and summons undead. The boat has attacks
- difficult boss on foot, much easier on mount. he notes that mounted combat is generally valuable for field bosses
-boss drops a skeletal militiaman summon that revives once when killed

Raya Lucaria: (note: this is the castle/dungeon's name. the actual name of the open field was not shown to him. he guesses it is Caria.)
- probably considered the game's "second zone" after Limgrave
- magical castle atop a flat, misty watery area of crystals, balloons and ocean creatures.
- Enemies include giant lobsters, snails, turtle warriors, and magic war machines with pilots. lots of mages/"evil Hogwarts"
- lots of half-submerged buildings, sometimes have to parkour them over deep water
- "Irithyll or Anor Londo dialed up"
- castle itself is locked. need glintstone key

Roundtable Hold:
- Melina can warp you to the hub, Roundtable Hold, a place for Tarnished to gather
- several NPCs already there. NPCs found in the world can move there
- the warp first occurred when he rested at a new Site of Grace near Stormveil Castle
- hub is not directly accessible from the world. it is not located in the Lands Between
- Arthurian/Bloodborne aesthetic
- has a blacksmith who resembles Andre from Dark Souls. he is a prisoner there. required to upgrade weapons above +3
- Two Maiden Husks NPC asks him for 'bell bearings'
- contains an arena where he was attacked by a 'Frenzy Tongue' enemy with a scythe and frost magic. reminded him of Gehrman from Bloodborne
- NPC named Fia, the Deathbed Companion, whom you can embrace anytime for a consumable buff- but you can only hold 1 at a time. (like Divine Child's rice from Sekiro)

"Do you think Elden Ring will take Bloodborne's throne?" "Yeah, I do."

He feels like 10 hours was nothing and he barely scratched the surface of the game. Called it "the GOAT". Said he was more hyped for it than any game in his life or career

"How is this game for a new player?" "It could seem overwhelming and challenging at first, but once you get into it you'll probably never want to play another game again."

A city underneath. Oh man I'm loving it. I'm getting excited now. If I only explore one place in the world, that will be the place. The only thing I'm weary of is with the openess, it's going to be hard to know where you are supposed to be if you aren't good like me. In Bloodborne I stumbled into old yarnham pretty early. Didn't realize it was a optional area at the time. But I liked it so much that I made that the area I basically worked on. That guy on the roof was rough.

That is the one thing I've been waiting for an open-world developer to accomplish since GTA3 came out.

Figures From would be the first to pull it off.

Granted, Rockstar did ocean floor and undersea environments, but a city beneath a city is what I've been after and Elden Ring hits that benchmark.

Fallout 3 came close with its subway system, but I wanted a straight up city. This sounds like what I've been waiting for...

Early potential GOTY for me. I loved the beta. Only issues I had was all the bosses felt like rehashed boss designs with new skins from previous FS games. That's my main fear with the game is they're just going to pile a bunch of rehashed boss fights due to the massive scale. I kinda expected it but I just hope it's not the norm. I also felt like magic needed a major rebalance. It was absolutely incredibly OP in Elden Ring beta. I'm talking Demon's Souls OP. I was surprised at how well the open world meshed well with FS design. These guys have led the industry and inspired so many Souls-like games. I expect them now to lead the industry again how to make a sandbox Souls game. Expect everyone to try to copy the formula now like Ubisoft.

Early year has a lot I'm interested in. Elden Ring, King of Waifus, Stranger in Paradise, Triangle Strategy. Epic first quarter.

Interesting how we have two different list here of classes basically in this thread.
I used what IGN has on their sites for the thread. Fextralife and other wikis seem to have different information, although in this particular wiki below it looks like we still don't have the full picture with regard to stats and the finer details of the classes.

When people start digging into the full game (which should probably be any day now), these wikis should begin populating with more accurate details.

You're not locked to any specific class I believe. It's probably like Dark Souls where it gives a baseline but you can make them however you want.

I forgot which one it was in beta but one of them got a super OP spell once you went through the beta. I think it was Hero or Champion? Had this claw attack that came up from the ground and would demolish groups but also good high single target damage. That's what makes the spells so OP in this game because they throw groups at you unlike previous Souls games so crowd control is more important and spells can wipe crowds clean. It seems you're playing handicapped without spells. Enchanted Knight was another good class because they were a mix of tankier style with magic. You can also summon these powerful spirit guardians for any class. It's like a SP version of co-op but you can summon them anywhere.

I have a question for anyone to answer. I've never really dug deep in the souls games but I was wondering about the class that usually doesn't have armor or anything starting out. They have called them different things in various games. I've never used them but I've read they can actually be pretty good since their point distribution when leveling up is equal. My question is can they equip armor and metal weapons or are they locked to no armor or metal weapons.

You can equip whatever you want after the game starts. The deprived class just doesn't start with armor or apparel.

I like to go naked class for the added difficulty at the beginning and everything feels like an upgrade afterwards. You'll find the other classes' equipment and spells in the game regardless I'm sure.

It's been a while but if I recall correctly, birthday suit class is bad for min-maxing because of its equal stats. I.e. you'll have some wasted stats if you wanted to go full on strength build squashing everything into pancakes or going straight magic & blasting everything from afar or whatever.

You can also summon these powerful spirit guardians for any class. It's like a SP version of co-op but you can summon them anywhere.
I had heard the guardian spirits were area specific. Not to the individual spirits but there were specific areas where you could use the spirits and areas you couldn't.

I think my build this time is definitely going to be agility based. I have found I don't have the skills to take these guys head on basically . Now that will obviously have it's drawbacks in certain situations. Figuring out the right build for me has always been the hard part, partly cause I've never really understood some of the mechanics behind that. My main goal is to find the right mixture that gets me the furthest in the game as far as seeing as much as possible. I don't have any dreams of actually beating the game. They have went a ways to making the world accessable to all, I just want to be able to beat as many bad guys along the way as I can and maybe see the end of a dungeon or two.

Every class starts at a different level in these games. On the surface it seems like the pyromancer is best for min maxing in the first Dark Souls because its the only class that starts at level 1 which means you have the full freedom of where to add every single point.

However, the pyromancer's base stats are still dolled out in a particular way, so its not a thing that's set in stone and depends on what the player wants.
