Our culture

We foster a high-performance culture, where talented people can thrive.

A culture that raises the standards of what we do every day for our customers, communities, shareholders and each other.

A culture that supports our strategy to be customer-centric, deliver focused sustainable growth, and be simple and agile.

This enables every team to connect more closely to our customers and seek to improve their experience.

This will help us achieve our ambition to be the most trusted bank globally, putting customers at the heart of everything we do.

A common approach

Our leadership framework supports high performance.

The framework gives colleagues practical tools, a common leadership language and shared direction that help us work together to better serve our customers.

It’s underpinned by six leadership principles that define what good leadership, behaviours and success look like at HSBC:

Meet our leaders

HSBC leaders explain what our leadership principles mean to them and how they’re helping to deliver better outcomes.

[Jo]

At the bank, we have six leadership principles, and today I’d like to talk about “Think customer, deliver value.”

To me it’s about trust.

It’s about the trust that’s earned with our customers as we support them through their journey.

[Text on screen]

Think customer, deliver value

trust

[Jo]

And then when they achieve that scale and they think about that expansion internationally, it’s about the trust that’s earned by really understanding who they are and what they stand for and how they need to grow.

[Text on screen]

support

[Jo]

We have supported an Indian EV manufacturer really through their growth from the beginning to IPO.

And it’s really about how we had a relationship with them from the beginning.

We identified them as a change maker.

[Text on screen]

changemaker

[Jo]

They did not want to be just another EV manufacturer.

They were thinking about the entire ecosystem.

And it’s really starting with them from the beginning as we saw them through to IPO, that gave us the clarity of what they needed and a true understanding of their business and their needs.

My top tip, as everyone thinks about this leadership principle is really to think about the end customer that sits outside the four walls of any institution.

And in every action that we do, are we being responsive, are we being thoughtful, is it aligned to what they are trying to achieve?

And that makes it very simple, end to end, wherever you sit in any institution.

[David]

At HSBC, we have six leadership principles.

I want to talk to you about “Simplify to amplify.”

For me, simplify to amplify is about stripping everything back to first principles and just looking at what are the core tenets that are creating value.

[Text on screen]

Simplify to amplify

value

[David]

Complexity scales effort.

Simplicity, that scales outcome.

And technology is one of the best, if not the best enabler to create a simple bank for our customers and colleagues.

We have to make sure that we’re keeping simplify to amplify as a foundation to our AI endeavours.

[Text on screen]

foundations

[David]

If we just put technology over our existing complexity, all we will do is create faster complexity.

This is around simplifying the foundations, simplifying processes, client interactions, our data, and our knowledge.

If we get that right, we’ll be able to accelerate the simplification agenda, and AI will become an amplifier for our customers and our colleagues.

My top tip for embedding this principle is challenge every assumption.

[Text on screen]

challenge

[David]

Challenge and question with respect and data so that we’re getting right back to what is generating true value in a process and broader across the organisation.

If we do that, then we’ll be able to create not just a simpler bank but a simple bank for our customers and our colleagues.

[Caoimhe]

So, at HSBC we have six leadership principles.

And I’m going to talk about “Challenge, align and commit.”

So, challenge, align and commit to me really is about delivering the right outcomes for our customers.

[Text on screen]

outcomes

[Caoimhe]

So, first of all we challenge.

We challenge each other to identify where there may be issues.

We then align on the solution, and then we commit to embedding this so that we can deliver for the customer.

[Text on screen]

solutions

[Caoimhe]

We are bringing this principle to life to retain the trust that the customer has in us, by simplifying some of the activities that the risk stewards carry out today.

[Text on screen]

simplifying

[Caoimhe]

The challenge there is that we are looking to remove some of the admin tasks that they currently carry out because we believe that it will truly deliver value to the customers.

My top tip for embedding this in the team when it comes to challenge is to really ask some of the difficult questions.

When it comes to aligning, go in with an open mind, really listen to the solution that is being proposed.

When it comes to committing, really stand unified behind the solution that has been agreed.

This is how we will deliver the best outcomes.

At HSBC, we have six leadership principles.

I'm here to talk to you about “See it through, make it happen.”

See it through, make it happen.

[Text on screen]

See it through, make it happen.

[Vivek]

It's about turning ideas into action.

[Text on screen]

action

[Vivek]

And just as importantly, it's turning action into outcomes.

It's about getting things done and executing at pace.

[Text on screen]

outcomes

[Vivek]

Global trade is going through unprecedented change.

We need to make sure we are there for clients delivering new solutions and helping them manage this point of transition.

See it through, make it happen is a test of whether we are delivering value for our clients and helping them navigate uncertain times.

My top tip is making sure everything you and your team do delivers against the outcomes and the objectives you’ve set for the business.

[Text on screen]

alignment

[Vivek]

Are you making a difference for your clients?

Are you making the world more efficient?

How does action lead to outcome.

Great leaders build better leaders

[Ida]
At HSBC, we have six leadership principles, and today I'm going to talk about one of them.

“Great leaders build better leaders.”

We as leaders need to be making sure that we're pulling up as many chairs as possible to the table, that we're throwing down that ladder, and we're creating the right opportunities for our talent.

Because let's face it, no one succeeds on their own.

We succeed better together as a strong, unified team.

I'm bringing the principle to life in my team through a couple of different examples.

One is that we are in the midst of the largest wealth transfer in history right at this very moment.

$100 trillion is passing to next gen and millennials over the next couple of decades.

So we're adopting an apprenticeship model in the private bank, where we have senior bankers working with junior bankers and associate bankers covering the matriarch patriarch, the next generation and the millennial clients.

This creates upward mobility for our teams early on.

It trains them on the job, and it has them really interacting with our clients from a very young starting point all the way on up.

Secondly, I do believe that cultural fluency is the new alpha in wealth management.

We're doing rotations in different regions around the world. Why?

Because we want to make sure that we're bringing that global vantage point, that global fluency, that global knowledge, which is really a superpower that we have at HSBC to our clients every day.

My top tip is to lead by example.

Remember that shadow that you cast is incredibly important.

At HSBC, we have six leadership principles, and today I want to talk about “Create excitement, inspire ambition.”

[Text on screen]

Create excitement, inspire ambition

[Maggie]

Create excitement, inspire ambition means there is a higher purpose to the job.

[Text on screen]

purpose

[Maggie]

We have a better future outlook and we can all take on an entrepreneurial spirit.

A couple of years ago in HSBC Hong Kong, we banked almost everyone in Hong Kong.

And therefore to some people, it sounds like we’re already saturated.

But that's not very inspiring that you're in a saturated market.

And we said Hong Kong is for Hong Kong but also for the world.

We reset like that, immediately we opened up another 30 million customers that potentially we can bring on.

[Text on screen]

reset

[Maggie]

That is how we’re going to inspire and excite the team and also encourage an entrepreneurial spirit.

My top tip for embedding this principle within the team is to redefine our customer segment.

[Text on screen]

redefine

We are now immediately going into a growth mode.
