Zootopia Still 7 - H 2016
Courtesy of DisneyZootopia finally topped the Japanese box office in its third weekend, after spending two weeks at No. 2.
The Byron Howard and Rich Moore-directed animal menagerie animation took in another ?387 million ($3.6 million) on Saturday and Sunday to bring its cume to $27.8 million.
After bowing with $4 million on April 23-24, Zootopia saw its take jump the following frame, boosted by the Golden Week holiday period, good word-of-mouth and a large number of people going to see the animated pic more than once. Zootopia’s box office actually fell this week, but it finally dethroned local anime Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare, which fell to the second spot after three weekends at No. 1.
The only new entry in the top five was the first part of 64 (Rokuyon), a police drama starring Koichi Sato, directed by Takahisa Zeze and based on the novel of the same name by Hideo Yokoyama. It collected $2.4 million from 319 screens. The second part of 64, which focuses on an unsolved murder-kidnapping in 1989 (Showa 64 on the Japanese calendar), will be released on June 11.
Captain America: Civil War fell one spot to No. 4 after its $7.1 million three-day bow last weekend, bringing its local cume to $17 million.
The Coen brothers’ Hail, Caesar! opens this weekend.
