The Lancet Commission on 21st Century Threats to Health will be published on 11 October, providing analysis on 17 catastrophic threats to human health by the end of the century – and the evidence-informed actions that could still reduce their impact.
This interactive workshop will go beyond the headline findings to explore the data, policy-relevant developments, and emerging storylines that journalists should be tracking, particularly over the next 6–12 months. The session will help reporters understand what the data means for a variety of beats including health and beyond: business, technology, security, and governance.
Dr. Christopher J.L. Murray, Commission Co-Chair and Director of IHME, will answer questions on the Commission’s key findings, the evidence behind them, and how this information can deepen journalists’ reporting.
Participants will have the opportunity to:
- Explore and interpret the Commission’s data and charts and understand how to use them to inform future reporting on global threats
- Identify emerging story opportunities and policy-relevant developments to track over time
- Discuss what evidence and resources journalists need to cover these issues
- Unpack key concepts in the methodology, including scenario ranges, amenable DALYs, and reflexivity
- Identify opportunities to engage with leading experts for commentary on the intersections between these issues
All participants attending the session will receive supporting materials and methodology notes to aid future reporting on the catastrophic threats.
Who should attend?
The session is open to journalists accredited to attend the World Health Summit 2026, including global health, science, development, policy, data, business, and visual journalists. It will be relevant to reporters covering diverse issues including health, science, development, technology, national security, economics, business, governance, and inequality. Registration for the in-person session is limited to 30 participants.
