Well, that's the first round of the US PGA Championship in the books and what a fascinating first day we've had at Kiawah Island - which looks stunning but is also a big test for even the best golfers in the world.

Canadian Corey Conners is a somewhat surprising leader but fully deserves his two-shot advantage after a brilliant 67, and there's a mixture of regulars and new faces behind him in a bunched leaderboard.

Keegan Bradley, who won this event a decade ago, is in the pack tied for second on three under alongside Brooks Koepka who responded superbly after opening up with a double bogey.

VIktor Hovland, Aaron Wise and Sam Horsfield join them while defending champion Collin Morikawa and Phil Mickelson are among the group of eight a further stroke back on two under.

Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm went round in level par but Rory McIlroy struggled to a three-over round of 75.

  4. 'It was fairly stress-free'published at 01:00 BST 21 May 2021

    Conners -5 (F)

Here is the leader, Corey Conners: "It was fairly stress-free I got a few putts to go in early in the round, I didn't get myself in too many tricky spots, so overall pretty low stress all things considered."

  5. DJ doubles the lastpublished at 00:42 BST 21 May 2021

    D Johnson +4, Garcia +5, Lowry +1 (F)

Sergio Garcia has a rueful look on his face as he collects his ball from the hole after a two-putt par. He was level par after 12 holes but a run of bogey, bogey, bogey, double bogey demolished his round.

Shane Lowry puffs out his cheeks after rolling in his 20-footer for birdie. One of the two shots dropped on 17 recovered.

Just Dustin Johnson left to finish up. It's not eight feet, it's about 18. Forgive me. It's late and it's been a long opening day! However far it is, DJ can't hole it. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is a double bogey to end.

  6. DJ taking penalty droppublished at 00:39 BST 21 May 2021

Dustin Johnson is still surrounded by sand and long grass as we catch up with him on the 18th. He has the ball in his hand, dropping it from knee height. I'm presuming he's taken an unplayable lie and a penalty drop.

A beautiful sunset appears on the screen. I'd much rather see DJ's shot though. He clips it up on to the green. Looks like an eight footer for bogey though.

  7. Postpublished at 00:35 BST 21 May 2021

    D Johnson +2, Garcia +5, Lowry +2 (17)

Here comes Shane Lowry, Dustin Johnson and Sergio Garcia down the 18th.

Lowry and Garcia are both in the middle of the fairway. Both take advantage and find the front of the green.

DJ is 50 yards right of the fairway and in amongst the sand and long dune grasses. He has a wild thrash at the ball. No idea where that's gone. All I do know is that it's not on the green.

  8. Bogeys to finish for Simpson, Spieth and Zalatorispublished at 00:31 BST 21 May 2021

    Spieth +1, Zalatoris -1 Simpson +3 (F)

Webb Simpson calls over a rules official in an effort to get a free drop off the path. No dice. So he needs a bit of luck here. A chip down the bank, checking into the upslope and trundling up onto the green. That is a wonderful effort. Can he finish the job from eight feet? No. Bogey.

Jordan Spieth, meanwhile, is getting a free drop after landing on a water sprinkler cover. He's still got a horror of a chip left, bumping the ball into a bank and releasing it over the top. A fraction short of pace. Can he hole the 12-footer? No. Starts right. Stays right. Bogey.

Will Zalatoris is also struggling for par. He's got a 20-footer from the front edge. MIssing. Bogey.

  9. Davis misses birdie chancepublished at 00:30 BST 21 May 2021

    Davis -3

Six-foot, four-inch Australian Cam Davis is making a big impression in his first PGA Championship, and it could have been even bigger had he converted a six-footer for birdie on 16.

Davis remains in that tie for second place though with the difficult finishing two holes to face on 17 and 18.

  10. Double trouble for Lowrypublished at 00:24 BST 21 May 2021

    D Johnson +2, Garcia +5, Lowry +2 (17)

We quickly return to the 17th to see Dustin Johnson take two from 20 feet for par. Sergio Garcia also took two

And Shane Lowry's toils are over. Two putts also for him but that's a double bogey.

  11. Postpublished at 00:22 BST 21 May 2021

Up on the 18th and Webb Simpson is taking a provisional after pushing his second shot way way right. After he hits his ball onto the green, the camera shows a close-up of his first effort on a gravel path.

Jordan Spieth has also pushed his second - a popular strike today - although he's much closer to the green and in the rough.

  12. Im makes a movepublished at 00:22 BST 21 May 2021

    Im -2

Sungjae Im has gone eagle-birdie and now he's on his final hole, the 9th, with a chance to join the tie for second as he's now two under for his round after picking up those three shots in two holes.

  13. Postpublished at 00:20 BST 21 May 2021

    Conners -5

    Leader Conners improving in majors.

  14. Lowry struggling on 17published at 00:20 BST 21 May 2021

Shane Lowry, still the reigning Open champion after his 2019 triumph at Royal Portrush is in a spot of bother here.

His ball is stuck in some sand above the actual bunker. He gets an official involved but the advice is simple. The ball is in play.

Lowry, after a lengthy deliberation, elects to nudge his ball off its ledge and into the bottom of the bunker. His third comes out hot and flies the green. Not in the plan. Damage limitation time.

  15. Postpublished at 00:13 BST 21 May 2021

    Johnson +2, Garcia +5, Lowry E (12)

Dustin Johnson has been two over par since double-bogeying the fourth hole. That's 12 straight pars.

I'm sure he'd take another one right now on the par-three 17th. His tee shot is decent and dry, just 20 feet from the hole and on the fringe.

Sergio Garcia, coming off a double-bogey seven at the 16th, creeps on the right edge. His heart must have been pumping. Shane Lowry is in the sand.

  16. Pars on 17published at 00:08 BST 21 May 2021

    Spieth E, Zalatoris -2, Simpson +2 (17)

On to the par-three 17th goes Jordan Spieth, Will Zalatoris and Webb Simpson.

Spieth first. Bunker. Simpson... wasteland. Zalatoris... starts it out over the water and draws it in towards the pin. Lands just over the hole. Great shot.

Wow. Jordan! Deft as you like, to six inches. Terrific par. Simpson also gets up and down. Zalatoris nails a two-putt par. And on they go.

  17. Rahm steady but Fleetwood strugglespublished at 23:55 BST 20 May 2021

    Fleetwood +4, Rahm E, Reed +2 (F)

Solid if unspectacular from Rahm, who finishes exactly where he started the day - on level par heading into the second round, still in good shape though.

Another bogey for Fleetwood makes it two in his last two holes and he limps over the line in four over and has a bit of work to do on Friday to get back into the tournament.

It was a tough back nine for Reed, who played it in three over to finish the day two over and, like Fleetwood, will have to get a wriggle on in his secound round.

  18. Spieth birdiepublished at 23:55 BST 20 May 2021

    Spieth E, Zalatoris -2, Simpson +2 (16)

Will Zalatoris plays a delicate little chip shot but his radar is a little off, the ball running six feet wide. That's a good par-saver though.

Now then, has Jordan Spieth picked up any tips from that Zalatoris effort? He has. Birdie time.

There's also a birdie for Webb Simpson. His first of the day.

  19. Postpublished at 23:49 BST 20 May 2021

    Spieth +1, Zalatoris -2 (15)

Over on the 16th, Will Zalatoris is playing his third on the par-five hole from around 100 yards. He punches one in low and he's a fraction short, the ball settling in the rough.

Jordan Spieth from a similar distance goes high high high in to the sky, parachuting in a dozen feet beyond the pin and spinning back to a third of that distance. Big birdie chance coming up to get back to level.

  20. Mickelson and Harrington finish wellpublished at 23:43 BST 20 May 2021

    Mickelson -2, Harrington -1 (18)

Does Phil Mickelson have one more super chip in the locker before bedtime? You bet he does. A deft little chip and run that settles a couple of feet past the hole.

He's studied the par putt from every angle. And he makes no mistake. A great back nine of four under par for Lefty.

He's been playing with Europe's Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington and the Irishman, who teamed up with countryman Paul McGinley some time way back when to win the World Team title here at Kiawah Island, finishes up with a par for a 71.
