Premier Giorgia Meloni on Thursday sent a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen asking the EC to grant more budget flexibility to cope with the impact of rising inflation amid the energy crisis linked to the Iran war.
"Among the priority dossiers on our agenda—so much so that I will be addressing this immediately after speaking with you—is the need for greater flexibility to tackle the energy crisis," Meloni told the CNA small and medium-sized business group.
"In a letter I sent today to President von der Leyen, we are raising the issue of inflation's impact on public finances relative to projected inflation rates.
"This is a problem facing all member states—consider pensions or the 'Single Allowance' [child benefit], for instance—and one must acknowledge that this situation does not stem from government policy choices. We are not the only ones calling for this."
