EU member states have approved the
new regulatory framework on new genomic techniques (NGTs).
The political agreement reached last December with the European
Parliament was backed by 18 capitals: Belgium, Bulgaria and
Germany abstained, while Croatia, Hungary, Austria, Romania,
Slovenia and Slovakia voted against.
The framework establishes a distinction between plants derived
from category 1 NGTs (those "considered equivalent to
conventional plants"), which will be exempt from current GMO
rules and will not require labeling, although their seeds will
have mandatory labeling; and category 2 plants, with more
complex genomic modifications, which will be subject to labeling
and to GMO regulations. Before entering into force, the
agreement must still be approved by the European Parliament.
Brussels estimates that the new regulatory framework will come
into effect starting from mid-2028.
