The benefits of Amazon
Sustainability

As part of Amazon’s mission to be Earth’s most customer-centric company, we are committed to building a sustainable business for our employees, customers and communities. We are driving towards a net-zero carbon future where the people who support our entire value chain are treated with dignity and respect.

Packaging

Customers want right-sized, recyclable packaging that minimises waste and ensures damage-free delivery, which is why we aim to avoid unnecessary packaging whenever possible. When this is not an option, we optimise the type, material, and weight of our packaging to increase circularity, avoid waste, and reduce carbon emissions—without sacrificing safety or functionality. All our delivery packaging in Europe—the boxes, bags and envelopes needed to get products to our customers—is now recyclable. This includes items sold by Amazon, and third-party selling partners that use Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA). More than 50% of our European shipments also come in reduced delivery packaging, such as a paper bag or cardboard envelope. Since 2015 we have reduced packaging per-shipment weight by 43%, and we’ve shipped over 700 million items with no added packaging at all since 2019.

Sustainability II

Delivery

Amazon is committed to reaching net-zero carbon by 2040 and we are planning to invest €1 billion in the electrification and de-carbonisation of our transportation network across Europe through innovations like micro-mobility hubs, which are now operational in more than 40 cities across the continent. Amazon has electric delivery vans making thousands of deliveries on the road in Ireland delivering thousands of packages, and An Post, who have a five-year agreement with Amazon, recently announced it had reduced carbon emissions by 35% since 2009 with nearly a third of their Ireland-based fleet running on alternative fuel sources.
